Comments about Sea to Summit Alpine ApII Sleeping Bag:
I've been waiting for years to replace my 20-year-old down sleeping bag. All of the new developments in down and textile technology get better every year. I'm an admitted gear geek, and research the heck out of the bigger-ticket items before making an investment. What I love about this bag is that I didn't need another layer outside (a bivy bag), it handles the classic condensation issues which reduce loft and warmth in down, and it's under $1K with lots of high-quality, high-tech features. Depending on the layers you sleep in, the bag can seem snug (what sleeping bag is roomy anyway?), but I felt as toasty as I needed to be. My body temps are never warm enough in the winter, so I also purchased the Thermolite Extreme sleeping bag liner in case I'd be chilly - even this toasty bag! Good news is I didn't need it but have it for an even chillier time. The first trip with this bag was about -5F winter camping at Rocky Mountain National Park.
I've camped in all sorts of temps and used hot-water-filled Nalgene bottles to stay warm in the Himalayas, and I'm confident about where I can take this bag when the temps go low. I would take this bag on a hut trip, on a winter camping tent trip, or on a damp and chilly car-camping trip if I'm not sure how low the temps will dip - it packs down small enough. While some people might think this is too warm, if you're female and sleep cold, this bag is worth it for many adventures!
