Great for the price. We use it on lake mead, and plan on taking it to Colorado. It's perfect for playing around and enjoying the lake, but my wife's 12 foot ocean kayak tracks better and is more responsive. It is very stable.

The Spitfire 8 is fun, easy to paddle, and well worth the money. I added regular carry handles so that my wife and carry it easier. She's tiny (i.e., 110 lbs.) but quite strong, and can now carry the kayak easily with the add-on handles.

A lot of fun. Great stability. Even had my 4 yr old grand daughter sit in the front of the kayak for flat water tour, she loved it. Short enough to place in the back of the truck for transporting. Fun on the water.

I ordered the kayak and picked it up at the REI store. It was wrapped in heavy plastic so I didn't inspect until I got home. The nose was damaged and punctured and a clip holding the cargo net in place was broken. REI was extremely gracious and took back the damaged kayak and order me another. The second kayak came in, so this time I inspected it, and found a cargo net clip broken. Same as the first one. They replaced the clip for me and I was on my way. Seems like there is a handling problem during shipping. A customer shouldn't have to be the one to determine if the product meets quality standards. They shouldn't deliver defective product.

I am a casual kayaker and have taken this kayak out on the Chattahoochie River and the Atlantic Ocean. Surprisingly, it handled awesome in the Atlantic. It was stable and cut through big waves when paddling out from shore no problem. It handled very well in rough swells further out and surfing incoming waves. It took a beating in the ocean as some of us often fell off surfing waves but it was very durable...no issues with the seat breaking or anything like that. It is compact and fairly easily carried by one person using the side handle. No need for plugs. I can toss it on the car by myself/easy to transport. Very happy thus far with the purchase. As mentioned in other posts, the tracking leaves a bit to be desired but can be overcome through paddling technique.

I do not know the difference between a bad and good kayak. I got two of these so my boys 12 and 10 could have some freedom on a 270 acre lake. They are stable and the boys can get back on if fall off while in the water. Very pleased with construction and durability. For the price very happy.
