Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:
The new BD Icon is in a class somewhat by itself.
The other main headlamps in this class; PTec Apex, Mammut X-zoom and X-shot, and Petzl Myo do not offer both both red and white light with a rear bat. pack and the level of adjustability.
The Icon fits well, the front portion is light weight and the switch is glove usable though not friendly.
The one question with the new BD Icon will be durability. It does feel slightly less robust than the Apex.
The other factor which will probably not matter to many folks is beam quality. The Icon puts out a beam that is not uniform is brightness or shape. Especially when compared to say a Zebra light (which is not surprising). However, even when compared to my Petzls and PTecs, the beam on the Icon is sub par.
Given the negative factors I have mentioned, why should someone buy this Head-Lamp?
It has awesome battery life while putting out your choice of 4-200 lumens, is tested to be water proof, has infinite output adjustment in both white and red light.
This is not going to replace my Zebra light, Petzl zipka or tikka, It is going to be used for extended night use when Weight and size are only secondary concerns.

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:
I can't really compare this to other headlamps, as I have really only owned Black Diamond products.
I have owned several Black Diamond LED headlamps, including two of the pre-2012 Icons (I was SO impressed with the first, I bought a second for our earthquake kit). The new 2012 model sets and entirely new standard. Although the battery pack is a bit heavier (four AA batteries instead of three), I don't notice the added weight, and the extra runtime and brightness is certainly worth it.
A very welcome improvement is a complete redesign of the battery compartment latch: the old one used a slotted thumbscrew that really required a screwdriver to open; the new one has a slick fold and twist wireframe handle that unlocks with a quarter turn and spring-folds flat and tight against the top of the case when secured. It also has a neon green indicator that appears in a slot when it is fully locked. Absolutely no need for a tool to get it open/closed.
An undocumented feature is that the lamp assembly still pivots down like the old model, although it only goes to 45 degrees below horizontal (the old one was able to rotate a full 90 degrees down—not sure when that would be necessary, or if I have ever used that much downward tilt). The old model had six detents throughout its 90-degree range of tilt; the new model has four detents over its 45-degree range of tilt. As with the old model, the friction on the tilt mechanism is quite good, so you really can tilt it to any position within its range, and it will stay put—the detents probably only come into play when you really shock it, as you might if you jumped down off of a >2-foot ledge.
The single most important improvement is the high-power LED beam. The old model cast a powerful "dot" (about 1 meter in diameter at a distance of roughly 7 meters), and had a SIGNIFICANTLY less bright "halo" around that dot (maybe 15% of the main dot's brightness, with a diameter of 4 meters at 7 meters away). The long-throw center spot was handy for walking down trails with the whole family (and casting a good light all the way up to the front of the conga line); it was NOT so handy for general campsite lighting.
The new high-power light casts a much more UNIFORM FLOOD of bright light over the same area (4 meters in diameter at that same 7 meter distance). At the very center, the new light is only about 75% as bright as the old light's center dot (which is probably why the specs for the old light show a greater beam distance at 10 hours). There is definitely a gradient to the new beam, but the light at the edges is still about half as bright as at the center. Excluding the slight advantage that the old light has at its center dot, the new light is basically about three times as bright everywhere else. This is a light that can illuminate the entire campsite, and certainly lights up all of it that you actually need to see, including enough to really fill in your peripheral vision (a big problem with the old light was a complete absence of any discernible peripheral vision when walking, unless you tilted it down 45 degrees and gave up seeing upcoming trip hazards with advance warning).
The headband is actually more comfortable on the 2012 model: it is a very smooth and soft fabric, and the light cable from the battery pack to the LED housing is one third the thickness of the old version and one-tenth as rigid—the coiled bit of the old light used to actually hurt my head after an hour, as it was REALLY hard and had a very stiff edge to its rounded-flat cross-section).
The red LEDs are just awesome, and are long overdue. The two white auxiliary LEDs are MUCH more uniform in their flood—the old light focused all four auxiliary LEDs into a very bright spot, but that created all sorts of weird optical patterns that radiated outward. Although the two auxiliary LEDs on the new light do NOT match the brightness of the center "dot" of the old light's four auxiliary LEDs (not even close), they DO spread a very useable and UNIFORM light over a MUCH wider area.
Mirroring the improvements in the main LED, the new auxiliary LED design trades some debatably useful narrow-center-dot brightness for a much wider, much more uniform, and, therefore, much more usable flood.
An unwelcome change is the loss of the "Mode Memory." The old light would power up back in the mode it was when it was last shut down, as long as you didn't try and power back up within 5 seconds of powering down (any shorter power down/up, and it assumed that you simply wanted to switch between the auxiliary LEDs and the main LED). The new light doesn't do that, EXCEPT when in "Red" mode—it WILL come back on in Red mode if that was the mode it was in when it was last powered off (so, far less likely to wake up all of your sleeping tentmates when your bladder reaches its limit in the middle of the night). When in "White" mode, however, it will SWITCH modes (from auxiliary to main LEDs) EVERY time you power up/down, which seems unnecessarily annoying.
Aside from that one debatable shortcoming, the biggest problem with this new Icon is its price, which is borderline insane. Black Diamond is trying to clear out all of their old Icons, so they are (as of May 2012) selling them at HALF of the cost of the new Icon. This light is DEFINITELY worth a premium, but maybe not its current premium. I bought mine on the Anniversary Sale (using my 20% coupon) and am VERY happy.

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:
I had this light for 2 days and was forced to return it. The battery case is very poorly designed and once the rubber gasket starts to pull away from the lid there is no stopping or replacing it. This happened the very first time I opened it to place the batteries in, a tiny corner had lifted and after 2 more times closing the lid the rubber had seperated so much I couldn't even close it. Forcing the lid down would get it on there... but only because the thin plastic case would push open enough for me to see the batteries form the top. Not very durable.
I was very impressed with the lamp design and brightness - if they ever re-engineer their "waterproof" case then I'd love this light.

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:
I bought this light and mounted it on my cycling helmet (Giro Hex). It's the brightest most multipurpose light I own. I like the wide light spill on the trail and it casts a bright white light. I have also used it to repair a flat, find something in my truck and when the electricity is down. It also uses NiMH rechargeable batteries!
