The REI Member Dividend
The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.
Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.
Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:
I have yet to use this as a caving headlamp and I am curious to see how well it stacks up against my old Petzl Zoras (I have 5). Although the LED technology has improved dramatically in the last 10 years, it still seems to provide only adequate distance light. As always with LED, the close in stuff is as bright as could be imagined.
In general I use it for military applications, car camping, and that sort of thing (I have a 3 AAA super light one for backpacking). What this one lacks in lightweight it makes up for in power.
I especially appreciate the adjustability of the light, as well as the red-light option. The smart computer dims the max light so subtly that you don't notice it as the batteries slowly die down until you put new batteries in it. This feature ensures that you won't be left without a light.

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:
This light has stood up to a lot of abuse, and still works great. The light is heavy, but the 4 AA batteries last seemingly forever. The dimming, red light, and lockout features are fantastic! This is my full feature headlamp, I use it when caving, climbing, car camping, or on backpacking/hiking trips when I move at night. I have a storm lamp for lightweight backpacking.

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:
Bike tourist/ bike camper. I bought this as an upgrade, my previous Petzl predates the current technology and I wanted a headlamp that I could use for camping and also for lighting the path while riding the bike. I was initially concerned at the maybe complex switches but found them very practical and intuitive in the field - seems like they're easier to use than to describe in writing. Excellent light. I like being able to dim the light, both to maximize battery life but also to avoid blinding others in the camp. I'm very happy with the purchase; I would buy it all over again.

Great light when you really need a light. Love the red light setting for those many tactical situations. Stop wasting your time and money and buy this one.

We know it's bright at 200 lumens, but find out more in my video gear review

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:
This is a great product for what I needed. It has much of the great functionality of the smaller units. I am a leader of a Boy Scout troop, so the 200 lumens output helps when I need a lot of light. I love the adjustable light levels. The lockout feature is nice to avoid battery drainage in your pack. It is a heavy unit, but most of my use os only for a day or two. Smaller units would be better for a lighter pack.

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:
If a Black Diamond light is what you desire, skip the small frippery stuff and grab the Icon.
I've been using this light as my go-to, until recently, but it still has a special place in my illumination arsenal.
It's a great looking light, neo-Baroque almost, and it puts out a wonderful flood light. the red LEDs are adjustable, so is the flood, and so is the spot. Which is a boon, because at 200 lumens that thing is BRIGHT.
I have few complaints with the light. It is heavy (it's replacement has a battery pack to mount on a belt or elsewhere) but you are carrying a 4 pack of AAs around with you.
All-in-all, a wonderful light!

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:
I purchased this from REI about a year back and have had a chance to use it a few times since then.
Pros: It boasts a sturdy construction and its 4 batteries mean it will run for a good time (this somewhat outweighs the bulk of carrying extra batteries if you're hiking for long). I've gone several weeks with moderate in-house use without changing mine.
The beam is bright. I am a flashlight junkie so I usually prize CREE leds and although this is not my brightest flashlight, it is probably the brightest headlamp I've seen (and the brightest running on AAs as opposed to 18650 rechargeables).
There is a lot of versatility in having the spot beam, wide beam, and red light modes (red is especially useful if you enjoy stargazing/astronomy, or need to read instruments like in piloting), and a great plus is that they are dimmable throughout the full range. You also get a strobe mode.
Cons: The battery compartment has a water-tight seal/gasket, and a quarter-turn knob to seal the lid tight, but beware: the design is somewhat poor in that if you don't pay attention, it is easy to miss the locking tab from engaging the locking slot, so that might make the compartment not water tight, and could put stress on the housing. You just have to press down hard enough when securing with the battery compartment lid with the quarter-turn knob.
I don't like that you cannot detach the power cord and hook up an extension (it would be nice if you could carry the batteries on your hip, allowing use of the lamp on, say, a bike helmet... I know the Petzl NAO does) but for camping/hiking (no helmet) it works great. Might not be the best choice for climbers. Although I believe if you go to BD's website, this year's model might have changed that (I think off of their website, it does include a detachable/extended power pack).
I have also found (as another reviewer noted) that the beam only goes down a certain amount, but I have not found this to bother me at all (I just tilt my head down).
Conclusion: In my opinion, the Petzl NAO and this Black Diamond Icon are probably the best headlamps on the market now. Don't know why it is rated so low in REI. Depending on intended use, you might not consider it a 5, but I think this headlamp is definitely worth at least a 4 star rating.

Comments about Black Diamond Icon Headlamp:
I really wanted to like this light as a replacement for my BD Spot. The Icons weight isn't noticeable since it is distributed front and back and the top strap, once adjusted makes it easier to slip on. The beam spread on the Main is great. I don't need tunnel vision out to 100 yards; I need to see to the sides as well so I don't miss a trail marker. However, I need a general light for all uses and this just doesn't work for around camp use. Looking at the PrincTech Vizz as a replacement for my trusty Spot.
Good:
• Bright! Even adjusted down this is an excellent light.
• Decent Red. Actually bright enough to hike with and one of the main reasons for buying.
• Great battery life. I don't use at full brightness, so the batteries have lasted three trips so far.
• Stow Off: The feature preventing the light from being accidently turned on while stowed.
Bad:
• Hinge won't adjust to point down far enough. This is the biggest fail and ultimately caused me to return it. Two reasons: 1) For camp use I need to light up whatever I'm doing, but this light *Still* blinds others when it is adjusted to point down as far as it can. My BD Spot goes 90 Deg. The Icon goes maybe 40. 2) I use bifocals and when I tip my head back to see the page: No Light! Can't use for reading. Fail.
• Bulky. Can't stow in a pocket or zipper pocket on the hip belt. This means taking the pack off and digging.
• Heavy. You have to factor in the spare batteries for a long trip and four AA's brings the total up to 11.6 oz. My BD Spot with 3 spare AAAs: 4.5 oz.
• Turn on sequence. Come on BD! No one, and I mean NO ONE wants to cycle back and forth between Main and Dual Beams every. Single. Time. When I choose one, I want to return there next time, 99% of the time. You can remember when I choose Red? Do that for ALL.
Overall, for search and rescue or other specialized use this is a great light. Not recommended for general use.

I was a member of a pit crew team for an off road race called the KING of the HAMMERS in the California Johnson Valley desert. We worked on the race truck till 2am in 28 deg weather to get it ready for the next days off road race. This is considered the toughest off road race in the USA.
