Comments about Black Diamond Contour Elliptic Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
We own three pairs of these poles and none of them exhibit the issue the other reviewer referenced. All of them have fully recessed pins holding the strap locking mechanism in place and are totally comfortable. In fact these (and their non-compact counterparts) are about the best general use, 3-section BC poles you can buy. The tear-drop cross sectional shape makes them super stiff and the best part is that the sections don't twist when you are using the flick-locks. You have no idea how annoying it is to have the pole sections rotate with flick-lock poles until you experience poles where that rotation does not happen. I had some BD carbon alpine poles and did not like the flick-locks on those after getting used to the ease of the elliptical versions.
These poles telescope into tiny packages, perfect for splitboarders, snowshoers, or trekking. I've hiked hundreds of miles with these and used them countless days for BC skiing. The locking mechanisms never wear out, never spin, never freeze, and are easy to work with gloves in any conditions. My wife used to hand me her frozen Leki poles to collapse or extend at many transitions until we got BD flick-lock poles. Since then, she has no problems.
Any downsides? You do need to pull the sections apart and allow them to dry after a damp outing otherwise the sections will corrode thanks to the moisture eating the aluminum. We also had one flick-lock plastic clamp crack on us when we closed it at an angle. We could still use the pole and the locking mechanism worked, but the plastic splitting was a bit of a bummer. After many hundreds of lock/unlock cycles one of the aluminum sections developed cracks near the flick-lock. We never stored the poles locked, so that was not the issue. Overall I like these a ton and better than round flick-lock poles and a heap better than any of my old Leki poles. I hope BD makes these for many years to come.

Comments about Black Diamond Contour Elliptic Compact Trekking Poles - Pair:
I used these poles one time when I discovered the problem with the grips. The pins used to secure the cap on top of the grip stuck out and felt like nails in your hands. They should have been countersunk but were not. The grips were not comfortable otherwise, either.
