    The REI Member Dividend

The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.

Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Comments about Black Diamond Contour Elliptic Trekking Poles - Pair:

I'd bought these for an upcoming one week, 125 mile hike of the PCT, after reading of the benefits of using trekking poles. To prepare for the big hike, I loaded my pack and did a couple four mile day hikes. At first, I didn't think I'd like using the poles, as I preferred to let my arms free-swing. But I found them at least somewhat helpful on uphill climbs, so I brought them on the big trip. And thank goodness I did.

First of all, if you're on the fence on whether or not to use poles for an extended hike, take it from me, they help considerably on uphills. Whether it be a slight incline, or a 15% grade, trekking poles take a tremendous amount of stress off your legs while striding uphill. You can go a lot faster, and it's way easier on your legs.

These poles were awesome. The "flicklock" mechanisms worked perfectly, and held strong at whatever setting I put them at. They are very lightweight and easy to whip around bushes or obstacles that may be in my way. Aside from using them to push on each stride, they also came in very handy as extra "legs" when crossing creeks and the like.

The straps on the handles are adjustable; I pulled the loose strap out a bit to tighten up the padded strap that goes around the back of your hand.

The poles are completely adjustable to find that perfect length. I played around with mine until I found the right fit for me. I hiked several miles at 125 cm, dropped them down to 120, and then settled on 115 cm. In hindsight, I should've gotten the shorter version of the same pole, saving myself a couple ounces.

If you haven't used poles for hiking before, I'd highly suggest them. I read that they assist by 25%, and I believe it. And if you do decide to get some, these are an excellent choice. At the end of 125 miles of abuse, they still performed perfectly and are ready for my next big hike.

Comments about Black Diamond Contour Elliptic Trekking Poles - Pair:

After using these poles one day, I had to return them. The studs used to mount the top of the grip were not countersunk and thus portruded making the grips unacceptable. I may order another pair if I can get some properly made. I do like the sturdiness of the shafts.

Comments about Black Diamond Contour Elliptic Trekking Poles - Pair:

I just ordered my second pair. First pair lasted 4 years of hard use and only needed to be replaced after careless whacking against trees and slow signs caused dents in the shaft that hindered collapsability. I used these poles as trekkers in the summer, for all my backcountry ski and snowshoe trips and as my downhill resort pole because of its lightness and compactibility. I've seen lots of circlar poles get criped and fail but I've had the contours bowed out in a crazy arc with all my weight leaning on it and they took the abuse. The flick locks had to be tightened occassionally but I never had any other issues and don't really like the newer tent pole design BD is using. It was nice to be able to pull the poles completely apart for cleaning.

Bottom Line: Bomber pole worth the $

i got these poles after back surgery to help get out walking again as i was very unstable on my feet and had a problem walking any distance at all. after getting them it really helped with stability, it made walking so much easier even on flat trails so i was able to build my strength back up. now its been 2 years out of surgery and i still use them hiking or walking on trails. they are not useful on paved surfaces but any dirt or rock trails perfection. also is a good arm workout. really similar workout to cross country skiing great product adjustablity is good collapses down to a small size for traveling or storage over the winter
