I tried on the women's Traverse 30 in the store and then "hinted" for my birthday. :-) But what my kids purchased online was not the same Traverse 30 as the one in the store! The pocket configuration was not the same, it only had one hip belt pocket, the hip belt was several inches shorter so I could barely get it buckled, the materials seemed flimsier, and the back padding/support was not the same. It was clearly a lower-end product for the outlet. I returned it to the store and got the one I originally tried on (which isn't even listed online now in the women's version). If you compare this one to the men's orange Traverse 30 listed online, you can see that they are clearly different backpacks, whereas in the store they were identical except being tweaked for a women's fit. That one I love. This one? Not so much.

Love this bag! I needed a bag to fit my office clothes and an extra set of workout clothes and lunch/snack for the day. This bag is the perfect size (one overnight) and is super comfy for commuting :) Weight distribution, chest and waist straps make a big load easy to carry. Very happy overall.

I've been using this pack for two weeks now, and I love it so much that I'm tempted to get another one for when this wears out. I like this much better than the current Traverse 30 (darker blue, large mesh pocket).
The extra pockets are very well thought out. None of them has an organizer panel (with separate mesh pockets for cell phone, pens etc.) if that matters to you. There are two pockets on top: the outside one is around 8x5" and good for holding smaller items; the other has some depth (9x8x2") and my favorite use so far has been holding berries from the farmers market, when I didn't want them to get crushed in the main compartment.
The two front pockets are not symmetrical. There is an outside one, probably best for holding a map while hiking, and an inner one that has 2-3" of depth. This is where I keep all the random stuff that I don't want in the main compartment. (The larger top compartment is good for quick access, but I wouldn't want to load it down with too much weight.)
I've only used it as a daily pack around the city so far, but I think it would be terrific on day hiks as well. As a carry-on for air travel, the length of this pack makes it stick out a few inches from under the seat, but the top pockets are great for stashing items during a flight without removing the entire pack. Thank you REI (and please consider making this version of the Traverse again in the future). The reviewer who called this the best daypack ever--I totally agree.

I'm a smaller guy (5'6"), so the women's fit is just fine. I also prefer the colors of the W's, so it was an easy choice. I bought the bag a couple of years ago from REI after spending months looking for the perfect day pack. I wanted something that was extended vertically, rather than the bulk of weight pushing towards the bottom of the bag. The weight is very evenly distributed, and straps near the center of the pack allow you to "push" contents further up or down if you prefer. There are plenty of pockets for separating gear and exterior loops for tying things down. I've gone on overnight hikes with the pack, while attaching gear to the exterior and it performed flawlessly. It's been taken around the world on voyages, giving me plenty of room for an SLR camera, books, folders, food, water bottles, change of clothes...all at once and with easy access. I just bought another bag online because I'm so impressed and couldn't turn down the great deal. Only once did I have a durability issue with the pack, when the two hip belt buckles broke. A quick trip to REI to assess, and I came out with 2 new buckles for free, back to business. Don't hesitate buying, you will regret if you do.

I used the pack for dayhikes in winter/spring/summer as well as weekend travels. It is just the perfect size to hold everything you need on those occasions.
The many compartments in the pack makes it easy to organize your items. The main compartment is very roomy. The straps are comfortable and well designed.
I have been using this pack for a year now and it still looks brand new. I am absolutely happy with this purchase :)
