Comments about GT Karakoram 1.0 29er Bike - 2012:
REASON FOR RATING:
This gets a 4 instead of a 5 star rating because of some of the components I was not expecting to have issues with, and am already in the process of swapping out:
1) Pedals - Have no grip when wet
2) Headset - Garbage (creaks even on the street). 3) Brakes - They stop ok but the REI mechs could not get the fluid to settle into the master cylinder, resulting in a further pull on the levers to activate brakes, and they always rub.
I must state that I got this bike as an upgrade project bike, knowing some components would go out the window. I had slated my priority of parts to swap out over time before buying this bike but I was not expecting to have issues so soon, or at all, with the three items listed. The pedals are annoying, but no big deal to replace. The headset and brakes, though, are more disappointing.
SIZING:
I am 5'10" with a 31" inseam. This actually puts me in an awkward spot in sizing. I bought the Medium after talking to an REI rep. I do think the Small would not been as good of a fit, but I am maxing out on the Medium. I have the seat post almost all the way down (the top of the seat is at the top of the head tube instead of the traditional positioning at the top of the handle bars (as I have on my 26") or even above the bars.
RIDING IMPRESSION:
This is my first 9er. The bike handles and feels better than anything I've ridden, even a bike I put together piece by piece (used to 26" frames). I ride the Phoenix (AZ) Mountain Preserves trails, which are very rocky and choppy. I felt more at control on this than my previous bikes, which was a real surprise since one of the negatives against 9ers I have read is that they are more difficult with technical maneuvers.
I took this on a 25 mile break in ride and was impressed at the comfort of the saddle. What impressed me the most is the fork. It's just RockShox's intro XC fork. Knowing that going into the purchase, I had already planned on replacing it. However, after riding the bike, I no longer have that desire. I must admit I don't do technical work on forks so I'm sure more skilled riders who like to do precision tuning would dump the fork immediately.
The only downside that can't be avoided in the 26" vs 9er debate is that the size does add more weight. I found myself walking up a slope I was better able to handle on my 26" previously. I do know it is just a matter of conditioning and patience before I am able to ascend that hill without a dismount, though.

Comments about GT Karakoram 1.0 29er Bike - 2012:
This bike would be amazing on rock and dirt conditions, but living in the northwest it gets a little more tricky with wet conditions. Other than the crankset bending the first week I had it, this bike has been great considering it is December. I was looking into cranksets and FSA considers bending the crank being a rookie error, but I have a 26'r Iron Horse from Sports Authority that I have ridden the same trails for 2 years and never bent the crank. If you hit a lot of roots, get a bash guard. The tires handle pretty well with wet leaves and roots, and it is so much better on the 29'r climbing and no longer loosing traction and flying over the handle bars while climbing up hills. Now if it wasn't for the rude people busting glass bottles on the trails, my tires would still be full of air.
Great bike for the price
