Comments about Garmin FR70 Heart Rate Monitor - Men's:
I find this watch easy to set up and configure. I've been looking for a decent heart rate monitor to use in the pool, unfortunately, this one does not work in the water. I find that disappointing for a device that lists 'swimming' as one of it's uses. For a cyclist or runner, the heart rate monitor function works great. Problem is, I'm a cyclist and a swimmer and I have a heart rate monitor for my cycle computer. Tri-atheletes, steer clear. Runners or cyclists, great device.

Comments about Garmin FR70 Heart Rate Monitor - Men's:
I never could get a reliable heart rate to display on the device. Displayed heart rate was usually 1/4, 1/3 or 1/2 of actual. It was usually 20 min or so into my workout before anything was displayed. Tried moistening the electrodes, using electrode gel, wiping skin with alcohol, etc. No joy.
Called Garmen to trouble shoot and they did send a replacement sending unit that worked a little better, but still was not reliable. Sometimes after about 40 minutes the correct heart rate would display.
I found the UI to be clumsy and non-intuitive. This was made worse by the lack of a manual. Garmin said it saved them money to just post a pdf of the manual on line.
Activating the rubber armored buttons was a little too fussy for my taste on a device that is designed to be used during a workout. It takes a fairly precise press at the right angle with a thumb nail to activate the buttons.
After a few weeks of trying to get it to work and hoping things would get better, I exchanged the Garmen for a Timex Ironman Road Trainer which worked great right out of the box. As always, the good folks at REI Tacoma made the exchange easy and were a help in picking a replacement.

Comments about Garmin FR70 Heart Rate Monitor - Men's:
This is a good heart rate monitor. With the ANT connection you can easily upload to connect.garmin.com to track your workouts along with your GPS devices. The cloud service is a big value add. I use this for rowing machine, hiking, biking, etc. I also have a 305 GPS device I use for biking, but many times I just use this instead because it's simple. I like the calorie counter because it seems to "give credit" for working out hard. A mild walk may be 300 cal/hr but you can burn up 600 on the rowing machine in 40 minutes.
A few comments on some of the issues noted in other reviews:
1) Heart rate accuracy and pickup. One needs to dampen the contacts on the band, and then it will be super reliable. I have had heart rates start to skip around with Garmins and changing the battery in the band corrected this. You might have left the band wet which will wear out the strap battery faster since it will stay on.
2) lap button. I've noticed that you have to press the lap button with a certain "speed" or it may not function. This seems to be due to the programming internal to the unit and is not a problem once you realize what's going on. Cross any device with a computer, and what you get is, a computer :-(
This is a nice complement to a GPS style unit for those times when you just care about HR and still want to use connect.garmin.com. This service helps to justify some extra $$$ which this watch costs for me.

Garmin wouldn't record heart rate most of the time. Returned it.

Comments about Garmin FR70 Heart Rate Monitor - Men's:
An all around watch packed with features. I like the style, fit, and clear display. It took me only a few minutes to set it up, wear it, and start using it. The user interface is very easy to use.
It shows two time zones, calendar date, and alarm. In the dark, the light is clear and consistent.
For fitness, it reads from the supplied heart rate belt, calculate calories, and also receives data from other ANT+ devices such as Tanita 1000 scale, bicycle speed sensor, and foot running sensor. It transmits this data wirelessly to the computer for analysis.
The battery can be replaced by the owner. Otherwise, the entire watch piece and buttons are covered with one rubber piece that makes up the wrist band. Should the band need replacement, it seems like one must replace the watch or send it to Garmin for service.
I did not want a GPS in the watch. GPS watches are generally bulkier, have shorter battery life, and 2–3 times more expensive (although there have been recent GPS models from Timex & Soleus under $100).
I wish the watch would measure heart rate while swimming. This seems a limit of the ANT+ protocol with limited broadcast distance under water for just a few inches.

Comments about Garmin FR70 Heart Rate Monitor - Men's:
i've owned this monitor for about six weeks.
two problems:
1. at first the monitor tracked my heart rate very well but now it has become sporadic, sometimes reading 20 or 30 beats per minute too high. during the course of a run it will go from too high to the correct reading to too high again, etc, etc. this problem is not caused by the strap contacts drying out as they are kept wet with sweat.
2. the "lap" function sometimes doesn't work, even when the button is pressed very hard. the "reset" function, which uses the same button, does work reliably every time.
on the positive side, the wireless monitor strap connects to the watch and begins the heart rate readout very quickly.
likewise desirable - it's very easy to download to the garmin connect site with the ant agent usb stick. the garmin connect site provides an easy and comprehensive way for me to keep track mileage, speed, heart rate and other parameters.
