Comments about Petzl Tikka XP 2 Headlamp:

Two years ago, I opted for the Black Diamond Storm because it was brighter and a little cheaper, and the beam was dimmable.

Here's why I have replaced it with the Tikka XP2:
          -lighter by about .4 oz
-the switch is easier to find (it's big and orange)
          -smaller body
-just more comfortable on my forehead
          -80 lumens is bright enough
-I never used the dimmable feature much on the Storm, but the diffuser works very nicely on the XP2 and is quick and easy (just slide it up)
-the headband on the Storm was awkward for some reason; Petzl headband is better
-it's easier to see which side is "up" on the Petzl with the orange switch
-I like the successive clicks to choose different settings when turning on; I really disliked the way the Storm toggled between the two settings every single time

          Cons:
-You can't lock the XP2 (unless someone knows something I don't); you could lock the Storm: a VERY nice feature when backpacking
-No "low battery" indicator (which Storm has)

          Note:
-Lithium batteries are significantly lighter and last longer, making up for their higher cost, so they're a win, win, win.
-when walking my dogs, the diffuser does a great job of lighting a broad area, as good or better than the dual LED's of the Storm; when I need to find a dog in the dark, I switch to the focused beam
-the low power is like walking in moonlight; haven't had a chance to use it camping yet, but low would be nice in camp/tent were you don't want to blind people
-it stays in red LED mode until you switch back, so you can turn it on and off at night without fear of a blinding light
-the red LED is not bright; probably suitable for inside a tent only

Comments about Petzl Tikka XP 2 Headlamp:

I own several headlamps and this is by far my favorite. This headlamp has the perfect balance between weight and brightness. I have another headlamp that is brighter, but the batteries wear out fast and it is heavy. I use this headlamp for everything-- backpacking, hiking, and I even keep one next to my bed for emergencies. I can't imagine a better product. I should also add that I am rough on gear and this thing has stood up very well, which is probably the most important thing to me as a life could well depend on this thing working perfectly at all times.

Comments about Petzl Tikka XP 2 Headlamp:

I'm going on my third year of use with the XP 2 and have been very satisfied. Primarily, I use it around the campsite and in the tent as my main source of light. It handles this duty with ease.

The functionality is intuitive and I like the option of low and high outputs. It also serves me well during night BBQs (don't overcook those burgers!), working under the hood or sink, and retrieving stuff from the basement storage. My girlfriend even uses it to read in bed at night and keep the ceiling lights off so I can sleep.

Even if you don't camp or recreate much this headlamp is better than a flashlight because it allows your hands to be free.

What I didn't expect to use this for when I bought it was as a bike light. The elastic head band fits perfect around my rear pannier and provides extra visual alert to the cars coming up behind me. Alternatively, I can put it around my helmet to compliment the headlight on my handle bars. In this role, the light gets hit with all the wet slop of my winter commute and hasn't flinched yet.

I see that other reviewers have had water resistance issues, but I've had none.

Battery life seems adequate, but I use rechargeable AAAs so I never really notice.

All said, this is a great light. Nothing flashy, but a solid & durable addition to my gear list that was easy on the wallet.

Comments about Petzl Tikka XP 2 Headlamp:

I am pleased with the switch design in that unlike some other designs the light is not likely to turn on when bumped or compressed with other gear. The logic for switching to different light preferences is excellent. The head band is high quality and easy to adjust for perfect fit. The red light is too dim for any use other than very close up (<2 feet). Hopefully the hard plastic snapping mechanism for the battery compartment will hold up for the life of the lamp unit.

Comments about Petzl Tikka XP 2 Headlamp:

This is my new favorite head lamp for one reason, the wide beam is great. Too many head lamps these days have tight focused beams that are great for hiking, but useless for doing close up work like setting up tents, working on gear, etc. It also has an flash/SOS option and red led option and battery level gauge.

They all weight about the same these days but I love this one. Plan to use it on Rainier in 2013 and will update you after that trip but so far a winner all the way around.

Comments about Petzl Tikka XP 2 Headlamp:

So after about 8 years of reliable service my original 3 led TIKKA finally bit the dust(dropped onto concrete at around 20 below) So there I was lampless in the middle of a dark AK winter.

I knew for sure I was getting another TIKKA cause my old one lasted forever. Bought this a few days later at the store. I breifly thought about the TIKKA 2 cause by brothers have them and swear by them but decided to one up them with the latest tech and spend the extra $$$.

So this lamp is amazing, I should have gotten it years ago, hopefully my old lamp didn't hear that! The foucused beam is far superior, very bright and has alot of reach compared to those crummy TIKKA 2's when your hiking, hunting, snowboarding late, or on the snowmachine after dark in alot of powder(headlights build up snow and make it difficult to see) It's 100 percent better than the traditional LED style lights.
The diffuser, is another must have, I use it most of the time, especially when working on engines, worthless sinks and searching for stuff in the car. For me the beam is too bright and distracting for that sort of thing.
The red light is bright enough to tinker with things close up or for when you dont really need to see where your going, like hiking on a beated path, walking around the house etc...

As for reliability I've had this for close to a year now with near constant use during the winter months since its dark 80% of the time and have had no problems. I initally thought the diffuser would not last long but it's as sturdy as the day I got it with hundreds mabye thousands of flips. Had it in steady rains, blizzards, and everything in between with no issues to speak of.

Battery life is no worse or better that my other one, I feel it dies off about 1/2, 3/4 depending on use through the batteries life but it's still plenty bright enough to use till you get to some batteries.

Basically, this light is never far from my reach and I highly recommend it, do your self a favor and spring for this light, it's worth it!
