Small fit better than Medium
True to size, but I get one size smaller if I want a garment to wick. It it doesn't stick (to the skin), it doesn't wick. It will stay wet under my backpack straps, but so will "performance" fabrics. Body odor doesn't seem to affect this shirt. therefore no stink. Unless you object to the aroma of wet wool. DO NOT wash in a top loader because the agitator in most TL's will try to shred your smartwool. front load only, or just cleanse in plain or soapy water. this shirt will serve you well.
Favorite article of clothing ever
Just an all around great shirt. I'm most comfortable when I'm in a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. These shirts don't fade in color, keep the same fit as when you bought it, so long as you wash it correctly and air dry it and you can wear it multiple days in a row on the trails with out feeling grimy. If it does get dirty, simply rinse it with water ring it out and put it back on. This item is epensive and I usually wait for it to go on sale to purchase a few, but even if I paid full price I feel that the its worth every penny.... NOTE: I did buy one where after a couple weeks the fabric in some areas seperated. In which I simply just exchanged it for a new one because REI is awesome like that.
Bye-bye polypro
I've been using polypro base layers ever since the late 70ies. Excellent for keeping one warm, but the stench factor has never been eliminated, regardless of various manufacturers claims to the contrary. These Smartwool T's are game changers. After reading that similar garments are worn by professional cyclists, I bought one for active sports in cold weather. I now own 5! I wear them hiking, skiing, sailing etc. I also wear them around the house and as undershirts in cold weather. And they are great for extended travel. While the concept may be a tad gross, I've been able to wear these for 4 or 5 days with no odor problems. I was taking daily showers, but laundry facilities were scarce. I took 2 on a 2 week trip to Colombia and only washed them once. Didn't offend the natives. Try that with polypro or cotton!
Better than synthetic but poorly made...
We bought several of these shirts based on the recommendation that wool was more odor resistant than synthetic material. That seems to be true based on using the shirts several times on multi-day backpacking trips. However one shirt arrived with a small hole and two others have developed holes after just 3 washings. The last one after 2 uses has the stitching in the collar starting to fail. I contacted Smartwool and they said to send anything back I am not satisfied with and they will replace it. I really don't want any more of their shirts if this is the quality of the product.
Smartwool T-Worth every penny, if...
Worth every penny, if... you are a true outdoor enthusiast that does not mind spending some coin for great comfort. Bottom line: True to size for a form fitting base layer, but size up if you like a loose fit. If you have sensitive skin and usually wear soft cotton you'll notice, but it is unparalleled in technical comfort. Extended review: First, the fit. Its trim, and body hugging, which is perfect for a base layer. If you work out, like the guy modeling it in their website, it'll be flattering. If you like the other 99% of us, it'll show every bump and lump. Next the feel. This really is T-shirt weight and were it not for the label saying its wool, you would never guess that. While not the scratchy, itchy, wool from the sweater your grandma knitted you, this shirt isn't Egyptian cotton either. To be fair, its wool, and comfortable next to the skin...for wool. However, its not even close to being as soft as my graphic tshirts from more fashion-oriented retailers. Not being critical, just being real. BUT, compared to my everyday graphic T's, this shirt trounces in performance. Actually, there is no comparison. I bought two of these (blue and green) over a year ago and have worn them as a base layer while boarding in Utah POW, and as T-shirt in Liberia Africa in their rainy season (still 90F+ with humidity like no other). In both extreme contexts, this shirt performed amazing well. In Utah, it was warm, and did its job wicking sweat away as I tromped through back country flats. Never felt clammy. In Africa, I slept in this, sweat in this, and got rained on in this. It always felt cool, dried quickly, and never stank. Amazing really. In between trips, I wore this to the gym, layered under dress shirts for style (and comfort), etc, very versatile. My only concern is durability. As I said, I bought two shirts. One shirt got a small run in it right by my belly button within a few months. That one went back for warranty. The other one, over the year, and extended wear, got holes and runs in the arm pit area. This one I'm not sending back because I really did wear it hard (because I loved it so much) and for sure got my money's worth for what I believe was a fair "lifetime of the product." (I did darn the holes and its good as new.) I wish I could afford a dozen of these in as many colors as they make, but I can't. That said, they are the perfect gift, for the outdoor enthusiast that has "everything" or at least thinks they have everything--until they get one of these.
beats synthetic fibers any day
I first started wearing wool shirts for hiking it was because i had heard that they keep you warm even when drenched with sweat. That is so true, not only does wool insulate well it also dries incredibly fast and does an astounding job wicking moisture away from the body. Not to mention wool does not retain odors, making it perfect for a long day(s) in nature. That is something you could never do with synthetic fibers unless you don't mind being the smelly guy. Another added benefit is the natural UV Protection that wool provide. One wool Myth/Fact: Wool is itchy! It is entirely subjective. Will this shirt feel just like your favorite Cotton T? No, it has an itch factor. However would i describe it as itchy? Certainly not. On a 1-10 scale (Ten being an awful hand knit sweater) it is about a 2 or 3 This is my first SmartWool Shirt that i have purchased. I have previously owned 2 IceBreaker shirts and another (the name eludes me) i can honestly say I love my wool. I can say that having owned both major brands, i believe the SmartWool fits slightly less snug (no major sizing discrepancy, just a little more free flowing). I have not personally suffered the fate, but DO NOT put your wool in the Clothes Dryer after washing; your beloved garment will no longer fit! Positive: Warmth while wet, wicks moisture, quick drying, no odor retention, and UV Protection Negative: Price (a little steep for a t-shirt), and slight itch-factor"
Keeps me cool and manages sweat well
I was looking for undershirts that would help maintain a cool temperature around my body, and thus lower my overall sweating. I have tried many different material types, most failing to do so. SmartWool was my first true success. I wear the undershirts as often as I can until I run out for the week. The only downside I found only occurs with the stripped version. This ones tends to reek when it gets moist with water or sweat.
Purchased in Leiu of another brand.....
to try. I have been using another top quality merino wool tee shirts for quite a while and and have been extremely happy with my purchases. However, when I saw this product and the price, I thought "why not give Smartwool a try?", and so far, I've been happy. Good fit, comfortable and appears to be colorfast. I did note on first wearing that the shirt was somewhat itchy, but not to the point of being uncomfortable or irritating. I'm willing to give this product the benefit of the doubt and see if it works out as well as the other brand I've been wearing. Time will tell.
The best shirt I have ever owned.
I had read some great reviews about 100% wool next-to-skin shirts. So I decided to take a chance and give it a try (I say take a chance because of the price). My first activity was a 5 mile run around Balboa Park on a mild but sunny day. The shirt was very comfortable and I never felt too hot. After the shirt dried off from the run, I checked for odor, but there was nothing! Second activity was a tough hike out in the SoCal desert, the day was windy and a bit cold. I wore this shirt as my base layer with a long sleeve shirt and a light fleece on top. That kept me comfortable in the morning. When the day got a little bit warmer, the shirt did a great job of wicking the sweat away and keeping me cool. I don't know what else to say except that this is the best shirt I've ever owned and I will gladly pay the steep price for another one. The only question that lingers is about durability, so we'll just have to wait and see.
great t-shirts
i tried one for use in my travels and found it worked great to keep me dry and warm even when i was dripping wet due to my jacket not keeping the rain out. just a comment. i havent tried them in the colder climates - yet. it drys fast even if you have to hand wash too. I now have 7 of them for my travels.
