Comments about Deuter ACT Trail 32 Pack:
For the past 16 years, I've used a typical day pack every day to carry my laptop, papers, lunch, snacks, umbrella, and ultralight waterproof breathable jacket back and forth between the hospital and research building. Last month I ruptured my L4-5 disc, and found that walking with the added weight of my day pack made me miserable. I spent hours in my local REI store comparing all the day-and-a-half packs with good hip belts and internal frames, including the REI Pinnacle, a few Osprey models, the Gregory Z30, and this Deuter ACT32.
The finalists were the Gregory Z30 and this Deuter. The most important criterion for me was how well the suspension works, and while both do a very good job of transferring the weight to my hips, the Deuter does even better than the Z30, because the shoulder elevator straps and load compression straps hold the weight so close to my back and shape the shoulder straps so well that they barely touch my shoulders. In addition, it's MUCH easier to load big flat items like a laptop in the Deuter, which doesn't have a big curved stay in the middle to break up the volume. The flexible arched internal support is easily strong and rigid enough for 20 - 30 pound loads, yet allows the pack to flex forward slightly, enhancing your mobility. The pack is narrow enough that it doesn't interfere with swinging my arms straight back, and it rides low enough that I can tip my head back all the way without contact. The hip belt does not interfere with flexing my hips and bringing a knee all the way up to my shoulder, so you could certainly mantle with this pack on. It rides stably with side to side angulation, so you could ski with confidence.
There are good side pockets that can easily accommodate liter bottles in addition to the usual hydration sleeve and port, attachments for a single ice axe and other gear loops the could accommodate a second ice tool. It would be easy to lash skis to each side of the pack using the compression straps. An elasticized external pocket attached to the compression straps can hold a helmet, wet clothes, etc. There is a zippered pocket on the front of the hip belt for ready access for a camera or snacks. The integrated rain cover that zips into a pocket at the bottom is a nice feature.

Comments about Deuter ACT Trail 32 Pack:
I purchased this product when I realized that my high school back pack would no longer be sufficient for hiking. The staff at REI were wonderful, they assisted in fitting me with the right pack. I was looking at other brands and was highly impressed with the Deuter methods of suspension and quality of the pack in general (larger buckles, etc).
The one major gripe I have with this pack is a lack of front pockets (pockets on shoulder straps and both hip belts). This pack only has one pocket on the right hip belt. It would have been nice to have more within reach for items such as small GPS devices and cell phones/snacks.
Overall, HIGHLY satisfied with my REI purchase experience, and quality of the product.

Comments about Deuter ACT Trail 32 Pack:
This pack is great for light weight travel, be it for work or outdoors. The pack is well constructed, a half pound lighter than the comparable Osprey model, and provides easy access to gear. The main compartment access can be done through either panel or top, a great feature. Delivery was overnight, and free with the current free shipping offer. All in all this pack is a strong well thought out pack.
