Comments about Deuter ACT Trail 32 Pack:

First off, this is a fantastic mid-size pack for people who are tall- I'm 6'6" and this pack fits me beautifully. Props to Deuter for making sure their 'normal' pack sizes will fit tall customers. As a very light packer, I don't want to haul around a bulky 60 or even 45 liter pack on my travels.

This pack is simple and functional, which means it's very flexible in terms of what you can do with it. So far I've taken it on a long weekend trip and on a canyoneering day trip. Even without the hip belt and chest strap fastened, the pack moves with your body so that it's a good pack to take with you when hiking or otherwise moving a lot. It carries a lot of gear or clothing very comfortably, and the compression straps work great.

Some people have complained about the lack of pockets and organizational options. I just used two packing cubes for clothing and tucked the rest of my gear into the three pockets and a small bag, and had no problem with it.

Finally, the pack is very comfortable. I've had to walk miles wearing it before, and it has never been uncomfortable or awkward even on hot days.

I would definitely suggest this pack and brand to anyone, but particularly tall people!

Comments about Deuter ACT Trail 32 Pack:

This is a comfortable and well designed mid sized backpack. Really like the zippered front access, the tool loops, and the variety of external pockets. The backpanel design is nice and comfortable. This pack can be pretty well loaded up with all the necessities, and still have room for the extras. The addition of the raincover is a plus. This pack is great for winter hiking, and is nice for allaround gear hauling on daytrips.

Love this pack! Use it for all kind of stuff. Even put a dry sack in the inside once full of H2O so I would have a place to put all the fish I caught that day and was still comfortable. Has a side pocket and a type of helmet pocket on the outside... Could stand to use anoter pocket area. Cant beat the rain fly! Tried alot of day packs and this one fits the bill!

Comments about Deuter ACT Trail 32 Pack:

I've used this pack for more than a year, both as a four-season day hike pack (loaded with hiking gear) and as an around-town pack (loaded with laptop, books, etc.). It's by far the best pack I've owned. With an ice axe, crampons, snowshoes, 5L water and lots of winter clothes, it's pushing the comfort limits of the suspension system, but on a winter hike where I'm leaving crampons or snowshoes at home, this pack is great (as it is for anything with a lighter load). Asymmetric zipped and open mesh pouches on the sides look a bit funny but are a great feature for efficient packing. The mesh pouch is configured perfectly so that you can get a water bottle in or out without removing the pack. Highly recommended.

Comments about Deuter ACT Trail 32 Pack:

I am a perfectionist. This usually means I spend hours in REI comparing two items side by side. At the end of my fair and balanced trial, I finally choose. I didn't have to do this process for the Deuter ACT 32. I knew right away it was perfect. The right amount of pockets, the right amount of storage, and the right amount of features make this my go-to pack for dayhikes. This is the pack I use for my Search and Rescue missions as well. It has perfect features for carrying some technical equipment, too (ice axe loop, etc). If you are trying to decide which daypack to choose amongst all the brands and features out there, why not choose the best? Deuter is a German company in the likes of BMW, Mercedes, Bayer, Nivea, etc. German engineering at its best.

Comments about Deuter ACT Trail 32 Pack:

Purchased for my son who is 6 ft. He loves the pack and it fits him very well. I would have bought one for myself but it is not designed for a 23 inch torso (I am 6'6"). Pack is well organized and layed out very well. Accomodates a 3.0 liter hydration bag. We average 20 miles on our day hikes and carry basic emergancy and overnight gear when we hike. Very happy with purchase and price. Great for most normal and light extreme hikers. Highly recommend. If your tall like me Check out the Black Diamond Axiom 30. Very happy with that pack also!!!

Comments about Deuter ACT Trail 32 Pack:

Have been using external frame pack for over 20 years, but thought I'd like a lightweight pack I could use as a carry on for a recent trip to Europe.
The ACT 32 fit nicely in overhead and I breezed through check-in.
Since returning home I've loaded it with enough gear for an overnight hike (about 20 lbs). Using some REI compression sacks I can carry a Hubba Hubba tent and a lite-weight sleeping bag, a GSI cookset, some food, a water bladder along with a change of clothes. It all fit snugly and I liked that I could access my gear from the top or the side... well designed product...zippers don't snag and the support system fits well and had a nice degree of adjustment providing a comfortable fit for a 5 mile hike. Overall this pack is a nice balance of versatility and cost.

PS STRONG PERSONAL PREFERENCE FOR THE GREY/ANTHRACITE OVER THE RED... I LIKE THAT I HAD A CHOICE!

Comments about Deuter ACT Trail 32 Pack:

Only used it once so far on a day hike - so far I really like this pack. It feels very well made and durable - I'll be able to speak more on that once I give it some more use.

I felt really comfortable while I was walking around the store checking out other gear/clothes. I practically forgot I was still wearing it.

I too was looking at the Gregory Z30 but chose this instead for the adjustability and the great fit. The included rain cover is def a plus too.

Only two things I'm not crazy about so far:
                  1. Only one hipbelt pocket. And it's kinda small.
                  2. Maybe it's just me, but I can't really position my Camelbak bladder tube in a way that doesn't hit my neck coming out of the pack. I tried a few times and it just always felt like it was in the way. I ended up wrapping it through/around the load lift straps and that worked for me.

                  Overall, very satisfied.

                  Service and delivery comments:

The guy at the REI in Paramus that helped me pick out and fit the pack was very helpful and knowledgable. Great staff overall.

Comments about Deuter ACT Trail 32 Pack:

I purchased this product when I realized that my high school back pack would no longer be sufficient for hiking. The staff at REI were wonderful, they assisted in fitting me with the right pack. I was looking at other brands and was highly impressed with the Deuter methods of suspension and quality of the pack in general (larger buckles, etc).

The one major gripe I have with this pack is a lack of front pockets (pockets on shoulder straps and both hip belts). This pack only has one pocket on the right hip belt. It would have been nice to have more within reach for items such as small GPS devices and cell phones/snacks.

Overall, HIGHLY satisfied with my REI purchase experience, and quality of the product.

For the past 16 years, I've used a typical day pack every day to carry my laptop, papers, lunch, snacks, umbrella, and ultralight waterproof breathable jacket back and forth between the hospital and research building. Last month I ruptured my L4-5 disc, and found that walking with the added weight of my day pack made me miserable. I spent hours in my local REI store comparing all the day-and-a-half packs with good hip belts and internal frames, including the REI Pinnacle, a few Osprey models, the Gregory Z30, and this Deuter ACT32.

The finalists were the Gregory Z30 and this Deuter. The most important criterion for me was how well the suspension works, and while both do a very good job of transferring the weight to my hips, the Deuter does even better than the Z30, because the shoulder elevator straps and load compression straps hold the weight so close to my back and shape the shoulder straps so well that they barely touch my shoulders. In addition, it's MUCH easier to load big flat items like a laptop in the Deuter, which doesn't have a big curved stay in the middle to break up the volume. The flexible arched internal support is easily strong and rigid enough for 20 - 30 pound loads, yet allows the pack to flex forward slightly, enhancing your mobility. The pack is narrow enough that it doesn't interfere with swinging my arms straight back, and it rides low enough that I can tip my head back all the way without contact. The hip belt does not interfere with flexing my hips and bringing a knee all the way up to my shoulder, so you could certainly mantle with this pack on. It rides stably with side to side angulation, so you could ski with confidence.

There are good side pockets that can easily accommodate liter bottles in addition to the usual hydration sleeve and port, attachments for a single ice axe and other gear loops the could accommodate a second ice tool. It would be easy to lash skis to each side of the pack using the compression straps. An elasticized external pocket attached to the compression straps can hold a helmet, wet clothes, etc. There is a zippered pocket on the front of the hip belt for ready access for a camera or snacks. The integrated rain cover that zips into a pocket at the bottom is a nice feature.
