Comments about REI Passage 1 Tent:
I just received my Passage 1 tent and set it up in the living room. That's all the experience I've had with this tent so far so take this review for what it is.... But given that this tent is brand new at REI and there are no reviews yet I thought I'd share my initial impressions.
I've been using the REI Half-dome 2 tent for a couple of years now, it's the older model not the new one they sell now. So my experience will be compared to this tent (which I really like). My motivation for getting the Passage 1 was to reduce weight and bulk in my backpack, I camp once a month as an adult leader for a Boy Scout troop.
The Passage 1 weighed in at 4 lb, 1 oz (without footprint) compared to 6 lb 1 oz. for the Half-dome 2 (with footprint). It is also substantially smaller, so that's a win. A minor annoyance, the bag they provide is much too large for the rolled up tent, but it has compression straps so it works out ok.
Setup was very easy, attach poles on each corner, clip the tent to the poles, throw over the rain fly, done! I could have this done in under 5 minutes now that I've done it once. It is free standing and could be used without any stakes (a plus in my opinion), although if there were any wind or rain you would want the stakes.
If you get this tent make sure you understand what "1 man" means. The inside is just barely large enough for my sleeping pad, no extra room on the ends or sides. I am 6'3" tall and I just fit with my head and feet barely touching the ends. With the rain fly staked out I expect good protection from the rain even with a little touching on the tent ends because the fly is held out several more inches and is never touched.
There is no room for gear or backpacks or anything else, you sleep in this tent by yourself and that's it. That's what I was looking for so that's great, but don't think you'll be stashing lots of gear inside with you.
Single vestibule is adequate for boots, but I'm not sure my pack would fit well. No problem because I leave it outside with a rain cover. Inside there are two mesh pockets for small items.
It's a minor annoyance, but I do wish it opened on the opposite side because that'd work better with my left zippered sleeping bag. The tent is wider on the door end and narrows towards your feet so your head clearly needs to be on the door end.
It only comes with 5 stakes, and you need 8 in my opinion to properly pitch this tent (one in each corner, and one for each side of the fly). I also expect to get the footprint once they're in stock, so this will increase weight slightly but it's still much smaller and lighter than my 2-man tent.
Construction seems good, and the tent is well ventilated. I cannot comment on rain-proofness yet, but it looks like it'll be fine. Overall, I'm pleased with this purchase and look forward to using it on my next trip.

Comments about REI Passage 1 Tent:
If I could give it 4.5 stars I would, but I rounded up. :-) This tent is nice and lightweight, but still seems to be of good solid sturdy construction. Easy, easy to pitch. Seriously, it takes a couple of minutes.
I am 5' 9" and 155 lbs. and fit perfectly inside with my pack too. And I can sit up without any problems. There is a pocket in the side toward the head and one in the ceiling. The tent DOES narrow in width from the head to the foot (which isn't obvious from the pictures), but not drastically. It held up fine on a VERY rainy windy weekend with no water inside.
For those to whom it matters, here is how the components break down:
Tent compression sack = 69g (~2.43 oz.)
Rain fly = 554g (~19.54 oz.)
Poles + pole sack = 516g (~18.2 oz.)
Guy line, stakes + stake sack = 97g (~3.42 oz.)
Tent alone = 635g (~22.4 oz.)
Total packed weight = 1871g (~66 oz. or 4 lb. 2 oz.)
Oh, and I got the footprint which weighs 148g or about 5.2 oz.
Could the total weight be about a pound less? Sure.
Could you pay another $200 to $300 for the privilege?
You bet.
For the price and weight and performance, I think this tent is hard to beat.

Comments about REI Passage 1 Tent:
Like the others I have not used this tent as yet. I plan to use it to replace my "Blue Hotel" North Face tent. I needed a tent that was small and light for bike touring and this is what I was looking for. I have set it up and it seems to be a decent tent. As the other review stated it's a single. That means you and a light and a book and thats it. I am 5'10" and the 90 inches fits with a little to spare. Yes you definitly need two more stakes to set it up properly. I had it setup this past weekend in 20+ mph winds and it's solid once staked. Weighs 3 lbs less then my old NF and it's actually small enough to fit in my front pannier, yah!! The zippers seemed a bit flimsy but they are new and need some use. All in all this is the size I wanted for bike touring so it works well.

Comments about REI Passage 1 Tent:
I bought this tent to replace my REI Chrysallis. Not that there was anything wrong with the Chrysallis I just wanted to change. When I saw the new passage online I decided to order one with the foot print. I have not used it yet, but plan to this summer for a two week trip into Yellowstone and the Tetons. I am about 5'10" 175 lbs and fit very nicely in it, with room to spare at the head and foot. It was easy to set up in the family room with the color coding and I like the 2 poles rather than the hub poles of the Chrysallis. The rain fly was easy to put on and the velco tabs will hold it very well on the poles. I did take it outside just to see how it would stake out. You need 8 stakes to set it up and I like the titanium ones. I was concerned about the fly and if it would stake out tightly as the Chrysallis was never taut no matter what I did. The zippers on the door and fly seemed to work well and the inside pockets and the attic should be adequate for storage. The vestibule is larger than the Chrysallis and that is nice. I like the side entry rather than head on. I have not checked the waterproofness, but will hose it down when the weather gets better outside, but I assume it will be fine. If not REI will always take it back. I am able to put tent, fly and footprint in a small compression sack which I like and the poles are nice and compact. I am looking forwad to using it this summer and have no reason to believe it will not be up to my expectations and REI's standards. It may be a little heavier than other one person tents, but I am willing to carry a little more weight to have more fabric and less mesh in the tent body. I would rather be warmer than save a pound.
