Ok I'll get my only gripe out of the way. Cannondale needs to go back to it's older conservative graphics themes. This thing looks like something from Nascar. Now that I've got that off my chest I can get into the meat. I come from a harder core biking background (road training and competitive mountain biking. Didn't want something hardcore but wanted something that could manage a 24 mile roundtrip commute to work, be comfortable yet still retain some of what I liked about my other bikes. The CX-1 is an interesting blend. You get 50mm headshock with lockout. Just enough to take the edge off extended light trails, gravel and hardpack but if you've ever ridden a headshock you know it's the ultimate in precision suspension. That combined with a "nearly" mountain bike geometry and you feel like you're ready for anything. That said Cannondale did a good job of providing a hybrid-like balance as the thinner 700c wheels and double fighters sit squarely in the middle between road and trail. You won't be setting any speed records on the road or bombing any heavy trails but what you will find is that it's more than capable of holding it's own especially if you're looking for a sporty commuter or city sport/utility bike. Components are reasonable. Good solid shimano hydraulics. SLX Rear isn't too bad either. The dreaded Deore hubs laced to Maddux rims and Deore Shifters. A quick upgrade to XT front and rear would be a logical upgrade path for someone looking to build but the combo that it comes with looks like a mess on paper but functions surprisingly well.

This is a fun bike to ride. Although I wouldn't describe it as being lightweight, once on it, it rides and handles as if it were very lightweight. This is my first experience with disc brakes and they are extremely reliable and effective. If I want to ride hard on the roads I still prefer my road bikes, and for hard core mountain biking, my mountain bike, but for everything else the CX 1 is perfect. This is a great bike!

I really like this bike, one minute I can be riding on a paved road and then next be riding on a trail. The tires are nice in that when on pavement you can have some speed compared to a mountain bike which is slower on pavement. Also I like the option of using the shock lever for on/off selection for comfort
