Comments about Cannondale Trail 5 Bike - 2012:
This is a wonderful entry-mid level hardtail MTB. I was in the market for a "big" boy bike since I felt that I had outgrown my Target Schwinn, which was nice for my last year in college and the years after where I needed an occasional weekend bike to beat up on. I wanted something I could be somewhat rough on and have it for years. This Cannondale is a world apart from any bike I've owned or ridden. At [$] you get full disc breaks which seem to be the norm these days and a really great front suspension. There is tons of travel in the shock and the lockout feature is worth every penny. Just try climbing a hill without a lockout and tell me how easy it is. The tires are very nice and offer a smooth ride with plenty of grip. They don't have the massive knobs some MTB have which I found really nice since it gives the bike a more urban feel and it cuts down on road vibration. I was able to hop off curbs with no trouble my first big ride out. The bike felt really stable and the fork did its job perfectly. The gearing is a typical mountain bike and the shifting is very smooth. The brakes felt very strong and I was really confident when I did need to clamp down to avoid obstacles. It took me a few hours to get used to the disc breaks since I only ever used V brakes. The grab on the disc break was not immediate and was more like a car than my old V brake bikes. Not a con by any means just something to consider. I don't really off-road that often or at all really but with this bike I am planning a few weekends where I can take on more advanced terrain than the usual sidewalk curb or tree branch/root in the road. While I don't think this is built for extreme trails or massive jumps it will handle well on the recreational trails around the DC metro area. The only con I have for this bike (and it is really minor) is that it is a little heavy. I know it is a mountain bike but there are no carbon parts I am aware to ligthen the load. Although carbon would be nice the fact that REI can't resell bikes with any carbon in them at their awesome Attic Sales is a bit dissapointing. I have ridden lighter similarly equipped mountain bikes but they had a higher price tag. Trade offs.So if you have the means I highly recommend you pick one of these up. It is so choice and buying from REI you can't go wrong! On a side note: Go into the store for a fitting. I was about to order one of these online in a small but when I talked to an expert at REI they let me know a small would not suit by build and in fact pulled down a medium that fit perfectly. If you do know your size in the brand you are looking at great just be wary for all you first time buyers or not as seasoned buyers like myself. Bike brands like clothes have different fit measurements.
