Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Men's:
I was very impressed with everything except the trekking pole tie downs. For some reason they are connected on a short strap which allows to poles to flop arround

Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Men's:
I bought this pack for a hiking trip in Grand Canyon: Rim to River, layover day at the bottom, River to Rim. Because it is larger than a standard day pack, I was able to carry all my personal gear for the three days (We didn't need tents, sleeping bags, food, etc., because we stayed in cabins). It was PERFECT! Comfortable, held all my stuff, quick access to things I wanted to get to on the trail. One of my companions even pointed out that the buckle for the sternum strap contained a built-in whistle! The hip strap allowed me to carry most of the weight on my hips, rather than on my shoulders, which made for comfortable hiking. I had four liters of water: two liters in a bladder inside the pack, two one-liter bottles in the outside mesh pockets, which are deeper than most such pockets, so the bottles were not in danger of falling out. It would be too small for a backpacking trip, but for this trip, it was ideal!

Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Men's:
I used this pack for a 50 mile section of the AT in Massachusetts. It comfortably carried my 4 day supply of food, my tent, and my sleeping bag all internally. The only thing I had to strap to the outside was my sleeping pad. I really appreciated the great organization and panel loading. I carried around 30lbs up 9 mountains, and this pack was a constant delight to use. The internal frame sheet really allows you to pack it tight and not have anything poking you in the back for miles and miles, and the pack as a whole fits snugly on the back and makes for an easy time doing rock scrambles where balance is paramount.
This pack was used and abused, and has held up admirably. The only slight damage is on the mesh side pockets from some snags on brambles, but it is still eminently serviceable.
Its heavy for a 40l pack, but you get a bombproof piece of kit you can cinch down, toss around, and generally not worry about breaking.
Then zippers are somewhat Snaggy, and the pack really needs another lower set of compression straps, but all in all, this is one of the best buys I've made in packs in a long time.

Biggest Con: No rain bag/cover!
I bought this bag about 3 years ago and it has stood a tough test; it is Amazing. It has lasted me through the toughest 3 day two night hikes, on my bike for 50 miles, or on the bus for an overnight. Extremely versatile, lots of pockets and all extras you need to carry tons of gear in a quality, comfortable, well thought out, and very adjustable pak. Under-straps will carry a two man tent and sleeping pad with ease. I love it has been Perfect! I hike very tough hikes and this thing can carry your tent, 300oz of water, and all your gear + food for 3 days two nights into the hottest hikes. Mine has a Rain Cover; i don't know why they took that out because the rain bag has kept my gear dry in the most extreme weather hikes and on my bike. I can't say enough about this bag, price is incredible and for the Minimalist Extreme Hiker it is perfect. I have tortured this bag, over weighted, and over-stuffed all the pockets and it still works perfect with no problems 3 years later. I'm telling you it Rulez!

Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Men's:
I loved the size and load carrying capacity, many pockets and organization. This is an A+ pack on many levels. I only wish it would have fit, I am 6'3 & 265 lbs. This pack or any other day/weekend pack does not lend itself to my size. I carry an Osprey Aether 70 XL for day & long haul; I like to be comfortable. I am a little confused on why I can't find a day pack or any other pack in an XL size. If you are a buck o'five or smaller framed then this is a wonderful pack for you.

Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Men's:
My primary form of transportaion is a motorcyle. For that reason I've had this backpack on my back at least 5 days a week for the past four months.
I use it to carry my school books and computer to and from the college and I've also taken it on several day hikes. The backpack I was replacing was an Osprey that held up to the significant abuse I tend to give my gear for 8 years. I have high expectations.
The good:
I don't think you can beat the price for what you get. The main compartment is large enough to carry an easy full day of gear in it. But it also cinches down for smaller loads. I've read a bunch of other reviews on this pack and people often want lower compression straps (which I would agree to add to the pack) however the straps at the bottom designed for a sleep bad etc works well to compress the bottom half of the pack. I love the way I can feed my camel hose around the front and how accessible it is. I personally like the mesh bottle holders on the side of the pack. They are deep enough to secure my water bottle without me ever having to wory about loosing when I bend over or set the back down. No complaint about the comfort of this pack, it does amazing in that area.
The bad:
Believe it or not my biggest gripe is that the small top zipper catches 9.5 times out of 10 or so it seems to me. It's become an on going annoyance for me. As other reviewers have said the side pockets are borderline useless as they take up space on the inside. I have notice though that if I unzip the side pockets I can get more room out of the main compartment.
Over all it has room to grow but again for the price not sure you can beat it.

Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Men's:
First off let me say, I'm very particular when in comes to packs/gear. Its in my nature ,I'm a US Marine. Its how I'm trained and how I've always been.I haven't had much time with the pack yet. Of what I know its comfortable, large, great quality material. Not to much un-nessacary straps/etc. One thing I would have liked to see is a hip belt that is removable or at least able to be tucked away. The straps along the bottom, although useful when in need don't fasten down all that well when not in use. Comfortable fitting, adjustable shoulder straps works well. I plan to have many a great adventure with this pack, from day hikes to a week or so camping trips.
Service and delivery comments:
I havent ordered from REI when I was in the states. I'm currently in Okinawa Japan. Their shipping time to here is slow and agonizing. No tracking, after a certain point. No time estimation either. I'm not and never have been happy with USPS. I don't blame REI for this, just wish they offered a different option for shipping. Guess its an incentive to go to the store, which I have no problem with when I can go.

Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Men's:
I have been using it primarily for walking errands around town. I seem to typically pick up ~30lbs of groceries. The pack performs well: it is easy to load at the checkstand and comfortably carries the load the few miles to my home.

Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Men's:
I've rocked a NorthFace Recon II as my everyday school bag and day pack for almost a decade now and it's never let me down. That thing is a workhorse.
However, I'm a big guy, 6'4" about 200 lbs, so one of my jackets or fleeces usually takes up all the room in my old Recon. Now throw in a laptop, lunch, a water bottle, and whatever else I need to bring to work or out on the trail and the thing is bursting at the seams.
So I decided to upgrade to just about the biggest day pack I could find. Not only does this pack come in two sizes, which is a plus since single size packs don't usually fit me all that well, but I love that I can fit a ton of stuff in here.
I use this pack everyday when I ride my bike to work and it is awesome. Have only had it about a month or so though so I haven't put it through the wringer (hence only 4 stars), but so far I'm loving it.

Comments about REI Lookout 40 Pack - Men's:
Use: training hikes for Sierra backpacking trips and general fitness
Great: superb fit for my hard to fit body; high capacity; very well built: beefy zippers, strong fabric, easily organized; has all the features and fit I found only in much more expensive daypacks; possible use as ultra-minimalist kamikaze backpacking pack for 1-3 day trips
Not So Great: hip belt pockets could be a little larger and made of fabric, not mesh; no top flap pocket, although that might have been overkill
