Comments about Yakima RocketBox Pro 12 Roof Box:
I bought the rocket box for use with my 2012 Focus for carrying camping gear. The quality is better than other boxes in the price rang and is easy to take on and off. Being able to access the contents from either side is a great feature. There is some wind wander from strong cross winds but not to bad, and it is aerodynamic. I had it shipped to the store to save 60$ shipping and was advised to call the store for pre-assemble prior to pickup, which I did. I was told when I picked it up no assembly was required. Assembling the unit in the parking lot in cold windy weather with picture only instructions for the first time was not fun. The assembly I admit was easy once you have done it once, but I would advise insisting on pre-assembly or taking it home in the shipping carton and doing it in your garage.

Comments about Yakima RocketBox Pro 12 Roof Box:
So after reading a few reviews I am in the same position as others with rain water inside, a small amount but still make me only load items that are sealed or water proof.
The box was closed properly the flaw is the gap in the front that allows the top lid to raise up and allow water to seep in.
Yakima needs to improve or re-do the construction.

Comments about Yakima RocketBox Pro 12 Roof Box:
I had to return the first RocketBox because I could not open the lock on the right side of the box. Neither could the REI specialist. Now the replacement RocketBox is having problems and will not lock or unlock on the left side without a lot of fiddling with the lock, pushing on the box cover, etc. The lock on the right side does not exhibit this problem. The key does not remove from the lock cylinder when the lock is in the unlocked position, I think this is normal. I will likely return this product and shop for something that is more reliable.

Comments about Yakima RocketBox Pro 12 Roof Box:
I read a few negative reviews on here about this model, but haven't found any of them to be true based on my expereience. Yes, the material is very light weight, it's designed to be. ABS plastic is very strong and light, exactly what you want for such an application. I've been driving with this on for hundreds of miles and have had no issue with leaking or the front lip/gap forming, as some people have reported. I think for those folks, it may have to do with how the rack is configured on the roof. My RocketBox sits on the rack with the rear elevated about 1-2 inches higher than the front, and I think this makes the difference, especially at high speeds. Amazed how much stuff I can pack into this thing....would highly recommend!

Comments about Yakima RocketBox Pro 12 Roof Box:
We used the roof box for a two week road/camping trip this summer (2012). With my wife and two children we needed the extra room for our luggage and camping gear. We stored our camping gear in the roof box so we only had to access it when we were setting up or taking down on the camp site, and it worked well except the catch was not very positive and I wasn't always sure that the lid was secure. However it wasn't possible to lock the box, or remove the key until the lid was secured, so I wasn't ever a worry that the box would fly open whilst driving along.

Comments about Yakima RocketBox Pro 12 Roof Box:
I drove from Salt Lake City, Utah to Pittsburgh, PA and back. I didn't notice any problems on the way east however on the return trip through the windy midwest I noticed something flapping just above the windshield. When I finally got out to check, I found one of my small bags sticking halfway out of the yakima carrier. Upon inspecting the carrier I noticed the front easily lifts and the edges of the top and bottom white from apparent friction. Luckily it was not raining and the carrier never opened wide enough for the entire pack to fly out. (It was a small gear bag with water bottles) There were only two items in the cargo box...a medium sized gym bag and the water bottle bag. It was by no means over packed.
I am considering returning my yakima rocketbox 12 to REI. I didn't pay almost $400 to risk losing items or to have my gear wet on a windy rainy drive.
Additionally, I found the locking system to be a pain to unlock and to close and lock. It also uses a different system than other yakimas in the interior to tighten the unit to the racks. You tighten big red knobs/nuts to secure the unit to the racks. The knobs and bolt threads stick up and sometimes impede getting gear into the cargo area.
I have a larger yakima skybox that I have used without incident least you think I have nothing to compare the rocketbox to. I am disappointed with the quality of the rocketbox.
I did not read the reviews prior to purchasing the rocketbox. I was in need of a smaller box for my smaller car and quickly. I would not recommend this box if you can find something similar that meets your needs. At least be aware of the potential problems. If you can look past the potential problems it is a small box that provides enough space to keep the interior of your car less cluttered.

We travel in a Toyota Sienna van with 3 large dogs. When it's just the 5 of us, it's no problem. But when we want to take the grandkids or someone else, for an overnight trip, we have problems. Now we have the space we need. Thanks REI helpers and Yakima.

Comments about Yakima RocketBox Pro 12 Roof Box:
I can tell that this model may not be quite as sturdy as the more expensive models. However, it was perfect for our needs and fit far more than I had expected.
I was impressed by its light weight, leading to easy installation. I could very easily do it myself (6'2) and took very little time.
Truly a lifesaver for making a small hatchback into a family road tripper.

I bought my Yakima for a road trip...it made for the perfect extra storage and left room inside my car for the dog! PERFECT!

Comments about Yakima RocketBox Pro 12 Roof Box:
Let me start of by saying I really wanted to like this box and to make it work. I was planning for a cross country, 7000 mile, 40+ day trip and needed extra storage for camping gear. I ended up picking this one due the small size and low cost, both of which were high priority to me.
The box was east to put togeter and install. It fit onto the factory crossbars for my 2008 outback and left me room for opening the rear cargo-hatch and the sunroof.
I took the box on a weekend trip covering about 500 total miles of highway driving. I very carefully packed the box with a tent, sleeping pad and sleeping bags. We made sure the latches and hinge mechanism were secure and nothing was bulky or made the top difficult to close. While driving the box felt secure on ther car.
However, after getting to camp we noticed the gap in the front between the lid and bottom appeared to have widened with the force of the wind while diriving. This looks like it could easily let wind and road debris in and became evident whe we opened the box. While it was not raining we did find that bugs splattering on the box from the road had been able to get inside the box. There were bug guts covering the hinge (inside the box) as well as the interior box serfaces. We also found several dead bugs. The return trip only worsened this condition.
I went to my local REI and discussed this with the person in the box department. After comparing the rockebox on display we noticed the front seemed to have the same design weakness, the front is flexible and can gap and open up with realitvly little force comapred to the other boxes produced by Yakime and Thule.
Based on the other box on display we concluded this gap appears to be design related. This box is shorter (in length) and a tad wider and there is little re-enforcment between the front of the box and the roof. I decided to return this box and replace it with a Yakima Skybox 16S. So far I am much happier with the skybox and we do not have the gap/desgin flaw which risks the items we put in the box
