    Interferes with Wireless Cyclometer

Comments about NiteRider MiNewt.350 Cordless Bike Light:

I've tried two of the MiNewt 350s now. Both caused my CatEye Wireless Cyclometer to not receive the signal from the wheel transmitter when on the low or medium output levels. Oddly, the high output level did not interfere, but I only got about one hour per charge at this level. My previous MiNewt 250 did not interfere.

I will be returning this unit and trying something else.

Comments about NiteRider MiNewt.350 Cordless Bike Light:

Great light for the discount price I got on it but I wouldn't spend retail on it. Great wide beam pattern and OK battery life. Light output is very good but this is a commuter road light, not a trail light.

The handlebar mount is absolutely awful, though, across the whole line of these lights. Why can't they design something like Cygolite or Planet Bike? I have to use a large C-clamp to crush the thing onto the bars and pray it stays on - my hand grip alone won't get it tight enough.

Also, as a warning, I had a 150lumens model a few months back and the battery lasted a single charge before crapping out and I had to return it. I've since learned Niterider has this problem a lot, so buyer beware.

Bright light marred by terrible mount

Comments about NiteRider MiNewt.350 Cordless Bike Light:

I last bought a rechargeable light (also a NiteRider) four years ago and I'm amazed at how far the lighting technology has advanced in that time. This light is brighter, lighter-weight, and cheaper than almost anything available back then.

So NiteRider clearly has the battery/lighting technology down pat. Sadly they can't seem to master the mounting clamp, which seems like it should be a Solved Problem by 2011.

The mount on this unit requires phenomenal hand strength to attach, but still manages to shake loose. All that tension is transmitted into a couple of plastic pawls about 1mm thick.

I can buy perfectly serviceable (all metal!) P-clamps at the hardware store for about 50¢. My $10 Planet Bike light has thumbscrews that require no particular effort to make vise-tight. So it's not like this is a hard problem.

The controls (actually just one button with red and green LEDs) is confusing to use -- I kept putting it into "lock" and "daylight walk" modes by accident -- but this design flaw is trivial compared to the junky mount.

I was torn between this model and the slightly-more-expensive CygoLite Expilon 350, which has a standard-issue mount with a tightening thumbscrews. I chose unwisely.

Observed interference with Cat Eye Micro

Comments about NiteRider MiNewt.350 Cordless Bike Light:

In the store I observed that when turned on and mounted next to (right handlebar) my Cat Eye Micro Wireless bike computer, the bike computer could not pick up signals from the sensor mounted on my front wheel.

However when I held the light on my left handlebar, my Cat Eye Micro Wireless bike computer worked.

Can any RF folks out there tell us why? Is an attenuator in the light causing RF interference?

Same results with Nite Rider 350 & 600.

        This light is very expensive.

Comments about NiteRider MiNewt.350 Cordless Bike Light:

This review is written for the Minewt600, but the mount comments apply to the 350, too.

I bought a MiNewt 600 back in November 2011, and have been using it ever since on my half hour daily commute home on unlit paved trails and lit streets. The light is plenty bright even on clear moonless nights @15mph; it's even bright enough on the 'Low' 275 lumen setting. The 'High' 600 lumen setting should be good enough for unpaved trails. The high setting for the MiNewt 350 is 350 lumens. The light is easy to remove from the mount, so I bring it into work with me. It's easy to charge. All of this rates 5 out of 5. Unfortunately, the toothed handlebar mount that came with the light doesn't quite work; I squeezed it onto the handlebars as hard as I dared, but the beam still shifted around a bit when I hit a bump. Plenty of on-line reviews touch on this point. But wait… there's more! I sent a friendly e-mail to NiteRider, asking if they had any suggestions for how I could fix the problem. They offered to send me a different, thumbscrew-tightened mount. I just got it today. Problem solved! My MiNewt now rates an honest 5/5, and an extra 10 points goes to NiteRider customer service.

Comments about NiteRider MiNewt.350 Cordless Bike Light:

Bought this as a handlebar mount backup to my helmet monunted light. I communte daily and in the winter in the dark. The mount will not keep the light pointed where you set it. It constantly points down. I tried adding friction tape to help grip the mount, no help. To add insult to injury, it has a short battery life. I will probably return it. The good news is REI stands behind the products they sell.

I bought this light for my short work commute. The streets are pretty dark where I live and I needed light to see, not just be seen. I am impressed with how bright the light is, definitely strong enough for my purposes. It attaches easily to the handlebar and quickly slides off for charging or if I am locking up outside. Having the option to charge by USB is great.
