I bought this for my 8-y/o daughter. We like to go on the dirt roads and old Rail Trails in the area so I needed something that would take a little bit of punishment and would allow her to adjust the gears so she wouldn't get bogged down in loose gravel or sand. So far, this bike fits the bill perfectly.She had a 20" box-store bike through last year and I was going to get her a 24" [@] special again. The problem was, she's at that point where she's a little too big for the 20, but not big enough for the 24s; at least the ones at Wally World. I saw this one online and went to the store to check it out. The downward angled crossbar allows her feet to sit comfortably on the ground when she's standing, and the seat can be adjusted low enough that she can ride comfortably. On top of that, the quality of the brakes, gears, and shifters...and the entire bike for that matter...makes for a much more enjoyable riding experience for her. Last year she liked going out, but had to fight with the bike so much that it took alot of the fun out it for her after awhile. This really had a negative impact on a couple of really cool trips we took.To top it all off, there is plenty of room for her to grow with this bike so if we take care of it (and she doesn't grow too fast) I'm betting this will be with her from the 2nd grade well into High School.

Purchased about 1.5 years ago for my now 9 year old daughter. Nicely built bike, although heavy, but the twist shifters on the bike are terrible. I thought they would be great for a kid but she can't shift gears with them and I can barely manage them. The shifters have been reworked at REI during the warranty tune & they are still bad. We now have a trigger shift on order to replace the twist shifter.
In talking to service folks at REI, the twist shifters are a known problem. Whoever designed a bike with these shifters for kids should lose their job.
