After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. Contact your nearest REI bike shop for details and an appointment for this important service.

    Comments about Novara Duster 20'' Single-Speed Bike - 2013:

My husband and I bought this bike today for our 6 yr old son. It is his first bike without training wheels and the first time he has been on a bike in over a yr. Like the other reviewer, my son has been riding a Razor scooter and his balance is terrific. He hopped on this bike in the store and literally learned to ride a bike in 5 mins. This bike is sturdy, easy for him to control and is a great weight. The tires are wide and have deep tread which I like. The seat and handlebars are on the lowest settings, so he has plenty of growing room. We love this bike!

        Comments about Novara Duster 20'' Single-Speed Bike - 2013:

First - we actually OWN the bike (unlike the other reviewer, who saw it in the store and was disappointed that it was too big for the kid).

My son is 8, and is 4' tall. This is his first bike without training wheels (he's been riding a scooter for a year), and he is Thrilled with it. Jumped right on a took off.

Second - it's lighter than I thought it would be. Excellent.

Third - It has both a handle brake and a coaster brake, nice for the transition from little kid bike to big.

Fourth - It has a kick stand. Silly, but important to my 8 year old.

Fifth - I like that it only has one gear. He doesn't have to worry about shifting, he can just focus on learning to ride.

        Service and delivery comments:

The service tech who checked our bike before taking it home did a great job, and he was really friendly and super helpful.

          Comments about Novara Duster 20'' Single-Speed Bike - 2013:

We have been looking for a new bike for my 6 year old son. I never thought it would be this hard. I want a simple bike (no gears, no shock) for him to progress on. He is currently riding a 14 inch wheeled bike and it is way too small.

Tried the Duster 20 inch single speed today and thought it was a done deal.

He is on the smaller side of the range for this bike and the reason we did not buy it is the crank arm length. When he had the saddle right for his down leg, his other knee was just about in his mouth. They do not list the length in their spec sheet.

Wish they did what Trek has done with some of their bikes and make the cranks with two lengths. In their case 127 mm and 151mm. That way, we could adjust as our kids grow through the bike. It might add a few dollar to the bike, and I would happily pay that.

I have been online tonight and will be contacting my local bike shop in the morning to see if I can buy a shorter crank and install myself.

My son is totally bummed that we did not come home with that bike. Until I know I can make the change to it, not going to spend the money.
