by fromNot what I had hoped for PLEASE don't consider this review as any negativity toward the product. I received this bike after ordering sight-unseen from another store. I had driven the matador last fall and fell in love with it and figured that this Torero would be similar. In the meantime (during the winter), I really got into indoor cycling and outdoor road biking and something must have happened with my taste in bikes. I got on the Torero 29er and HATED it. I was too upright, and it felt like the distance from the seat to the handlebars was WAAAAY too close (like 14"!!). If you road bike, you will not like how this bike feels and it is very hard to get yourself adjusted to it even if your purposes are trails and/or commuting. But the bike is sexy and has great components and I imagine there are tons of people out there that would LOVE this bike.

by fromGreat bike for the basic rider. I was in search of a robust mountain bike to use for every day use and for some trail riding and beach riding, I'm 6 foot and stout. I did some research and found this on sale at REI, which is their name brand bike. After riding it now for over two months I am glad that I purchased this bike. It handles well, with a smooth effortless ride, my wife says that she has to work twice as much on her bike to keep up and I don't feel like I am going fast enough the 29 inch wheels create a faster pace in my opinion. I have not had an opportunity to ride trails yet but will soon and then I may update my review. Other than this it is a great bike, great price and of course with REI if I'm not satisfied, I can return it within one year of purchase, great deal all around.

by fromGreat value -Average Recreational Rider I purchased this bike about a month and half ago for commuting and cross-country mountain biking. Current mileage: 240mi. I love how I can lock the front fork in place and commute to/from work (14 miles ea. way). On weekends I hit the trails and have found this bike to perform quite well. It has longer handle-bars which help maneuver the larger 29in wheel with ease. The brakes and shifters/derailers are precise and responsive which allows better hill-climbing, turning, and down-hill deceleration combinations, thus a faster bike. Although I was sceptical of the 80mm front fork (wanted 100mm), I have found it to be sufficient even in technical areas (getting over tree roots, rocks, etc) probably due to the larger 29in wheels. Perhaps the only flaw (if it is a flaw) with this bike is the tiny amount of play that has developed in the fork when it is in the "locked" position but it hasn't been a problem yet. Novara is an REI brand which means that the components are slightly better then similar name-brand bikes. With Novaro you are paying less for the name and more for component quality which was a factor in my decision to buy. I would say that this bike slightly heavier then other 26in wheel bikes but it hasn't been a problem for me and I am about (180lbs) and carry it on the light rail and up stairs, etc. This is a great value for the $$$.

by fromGreat Beginner 29er As a beginner, I found that this was an easy (and satisfying) transition from my "[@] Special" Mongoose Snare 26" full suspension bike.Incredibly smooth ride with quick getty-up. The gears shift like butter, and the 29er geometry allows for outstanding maneuverability and longlasting momentum (being 6' 2" and 240lbs helps too). The only thing that I might consider tuning (or making an upgrade) is the front shock. People have said that they've bottomed out when taking heavy jumps. Looking at my grease markings on a causal ride this afternoon, I can see that I reached 1/2 inch from the top of the shock. All and all this is a great bike, and I look forward to tearing up the trails here in Austin. Definitely a great price for a 29er!!!

by fromlove this bike My wife and I ride 7.2 miles daily on paths in our town of Northglenn. She also bought a new Novara bike at the same time I did. They are perfect for what we love to do which is get some great exercise on a daily basis. We're both glad we made the choices we did.

by fromExcellent bike Disclosure: I'm not a mountain biker, have never been mountain biking. I know this is a review for a mountain bike, but I use it for commuting, which considering some of the terrain I travel for my commute, it's similar to mountain biking. Pros: I'm 6'-3" and I got the XL frame size. This bike fits me better that any of the other five bikes that I own. Although not my fastest or lightest bike, it's my go to machine for getting to work and around town in conjuction with public transit (train and bus) here in St. Louis. Monday through Friday I rarely use my car. It rides and shifts smoothly. I put 2.0" width street tires on it (Serfas Drifters) that provide a great ride, also a rear rack that attaches to the seatpost. It will take a regular rear rack that attaches to the rear fork but it has to be compatible with the disc brakes - Blackburn makes one. Riding over debris, rain grates, jumping a curb, dodging a headphone wearing pedestrian on the bikepath - these are all non-issues with this bike. I love the lockout feature on the front shock. This bike is combat ready. Cons: I'm personally not crazy about the Presta valves but that seems to be the trend. Make sure your pump is compatible with this type of tube. Had to change out the saddle - the stock version was uncomfortable after only 15 miles.
