Comments about Novara Torero 29er Bike - 2013:

I was lookng for a bike that I could ride on the street as well as various types of trails. Have not gotten into any technical trail riding, but the 29" tires make for a smooth ride on the street as well as off road/trails. Shifting is smooth, brakes awesome, all around comfortable ride. The front strut has a lockout function that allows more of a road bike feel on smooth terrain and can be easily turned "on" when transitioning to off road.

All around great "starter" bike and great value for the money.

Comments about Novara Torero 29er Bike - 2013:

This is an outstanding bike for beginner riders or anyone who wants a solid, well-made bike for a reasonable price. It handles well, and the low-end Suntour XCM V3 fork works better than I expected (I'm 6' and over 200 lbs) for trail riding with properly adjusted preload. I was surprised at how well it works on paved roads as well; this will make an excellent short/medium distance commuter.

On the negative side the bike is a bit heavy, but it's in line with other bikes at this price level so it's difficult to criticize. The same goes for the components: the gearset and fork are not high-end, but they are a good compromise between price and performance and I have not had a problem with either.

This is a sturdy bike with solid components at a very good price. With a 20% off coupon it's basically in a league of its own.

My first 29er. Love it! I commute about 45 min. each way to work, some traffic, some paved trails. Cruises nicely, with the big tires the bumps and potholes tend to smooth out. Smooth shifting, and the disc brakes are a pleasant change. Haven't used it in NW rain or unpaved trails yet, but I really like this bike so far.

This was my first "real" mountain bike. The guys at REI were very helpful getting me fitted for the right bike for me. The 29" wheels make the trails so much smoother and easier to navigate than my old 26" steel frame Huffy. Now I'm not embarrassed on the trails with that old piece of junk.

Comments about Novara Torero 29er Bike - 2013:

Disclosure: I'm not a mountain biker, have never been mountain biking. I know this is a review for a mountain bike, but I use it for commuting, which considering some of the terrain I travel for my commute, it's similar to mountain biking.

                    Pros:

I'm 6'-3" and I got the XL frame size. This bike fits me better that any of the other five bikes that I own. Although not my fastest or lightest bike, it's my go to machine for getting to work and around town in conjuction with public transit (train and bus) here in St. Louis. Monday through Friday I rarely use my car.

It rides and shifts smoothly. I put 2.0" width street tires on it (Serfas Drifters) that provide a great ride, also a rear rack that attaches to the seatpost. It will take a regular rear rack that attaches to the rear fork but it has to be compatible with the disc brakes - Blackburn makes one.

Riding over debris, rain grates, jumping a curb, dodging a headphone wearing pedestrian on the bikepath - these are all non-issues with this bike. I love the lockout feature on the front shock. This bike is combat ready.

                    Cons:

I'm personally not crazy about the Presta valves but that seems to be the trend. Make sure your pump is compatible with this type of tube.

Had to change out the saddle - the stock version was uncomfortable after only 15 miles.

I love this bike. Bought it 2 weeks ago at REI. The staff was VERY helpful in fitting me with the best bike for me. This is my first "real" mountain bike. What a difference from my Huffy. I've ridden about 15 miles of trails so far and can't wait for the next 15. Not to mention its a head turner.

Just bought this bike today at the Olympia REI. It was a toss up between a GT and the bike mentioned above. The employee at REI really guided me in the right direction. You will not be dissapointed.
