Comments about Madshus Hyper S Touring NNN Cross-Country Boots - 2010 Closeout:
I have a half dozen pairs of XC ski boots sitting around. Alpina, Rossignol, Fischer, etc. I often XC ski in old skating boots or combi boots because I like the support of the ankle cuff and added height of the boot. We don't have any groomed trails where we live so we make out own track. We often break trail in crusty snow, or the track freezes, so boot durability is important. I have some reservations about how well these will hold up since the red fabric portions seem like heavy lycra-like material. Even the lower parts of the boot near the sole are actually just a cordura nylon-type material and not a leather/pleather fabric.
But these boots are amazingly comfortable. More so than any of my current pile of boots. I bought them one size larger than normal since I hate getting my toes squashed, and they cinch down nicely across the forefoot so the extra size is not an issue. The lacing inside does a superb job of cradling your foot and holding it firmly in place with no weird seams or pressure points. The tongue is nice and padded with a stiffener in it, so you don't feel the laces. The upper cuff holds your ankle well. The sole is reasonably stiff and also padded under your metatarsals, and the flex pattern is pleasant when you are striding. Getting in and out is easy, and they even look ok. They fit like a quality hiking boot.
The cut of the fabric around the toe area is a little odd and when I am pushing off with my right foot the upper of the boot pushes down on my big toenail a little. Time will tell if this becomes a problem. Even mild pressure, thousands of times, can cause you to lose a toenail. I only notice this on one boot. There is a toebox stiffener in front of your toes, but it does not extend back at all. This is the only issue I can tell other than durability being a question mark.
