Hybrid Shell Technology fuses polycarbonate and ABS plastic shells, creating superior protection and modern styling

I have a hard time getting helmets or hats because my head size is XL. The Smith Optics sizing guide put me in a size L, which was uncomfortably tight, so I went with the XL. Few snow-sport helmets area available this large.

Venting, styling, adjustments, and fit with Smith Optics goggles are excellent. I'm really happy with this purchase.

I have never used a helmet before. This is my first helmet. I bought this one because my girlfriend purchased this helmet several months prior and was very impressed. She has owned helmets before and talked highly of this one. First - This helmet is so comfortable that I don't even know I'm wearing it, which is the single most important thing to me. Second, it has great ear protection from the cold and keeps my entire head warm. It also has open and close vents if I need to cool down. I cannot see how someone could go wrong purchasing this helmet.

Great helmet, good ventilation, comfortable, looks pretty good (graphite is best.)Only downside is not due to the helmet itself, it's the optional drop in skullcandy speakers. They sound decent and are designed pretty well, but the big iPhone button stops working when it gets cold, or requires you push it in a very specific way. I've gone through two of them. Tolerable but can be very annoying, and they cost [$].

I've owned the Smith Variant for 3 years, and I love this helmet. However, after about a year and a half, the glue that holds the plastic shell to the styrofoam helmet failed. Smith honored their warranty and sent me a new brand new Variant as a replacement. After doing some research online, this seems like a common point of failure. However, it's not a deal breaker. Smith has a great warranty program, and I haven't found another helmet with the same excellent fit and comfort. I hooked the helmet up with their headphone accessory and my own bluetooth adapter, so I can get in touch with my other buddies on the slopes. No need to pay for their overpriced bluetooth kit.

Helmet is best I've had. Lightweight, comfortable, and well vented. Shut down the vents and I've never needed a liner on the most frigid Northern Vermont January days. Open 'em up wide and be perfectly comfortable on late March slush in New Mexico. Takes a beating in the trees and bounces back for more. Buy it!!!

This is the third helmet I've used in the past 8 years and it is by far the best. Extremely comfortable. The venting system works really well and is very easy to open and close even with gloves on. I didn't think the brim would make much of a difference (other than aesthetics), but it actually helped quite a bit with the noonday sun. I would highly recommend this helmet to anyone.

This is the first helmet I have ever owned and on the first day I got it it already took a beating. I took a good fall into a tree stump and got up like nothing happened. No cracks in the plastic, the vent system still functions properly. So the quality is on the spot.

The venting system is awesome. It was in the high 40s and I made a 35 minutes hike to the top and although my head was sweating profusely after 5 minutes of riding I checked the inside liner and everything was dry. Definite plus.

The only thing I don't like about this helmet is the adjustment section on the back doesn't really like to be tinkered with. I find it very difficult to adjust the helmet properly.

Service and delivery comments:

I actually received this helmet with a broken brim. It was completely bent out of shape and totally broken off from the helmet. At first I thought I could just snap it back but it's actually a part of the helmet. I contacted REI Customer Support and they replaced without any questions. Good job REI, for my first buy to be damaged, you guys did a great job at keeping me happy.
