The lightest and smallest water purifier from SteriPEN, the Freedom features an integrated rechargeable battery so you don't have to hassle with swapping batteries before a big adventure.

    • Compact purifier itself weighs only 2.6 oz. and measures 5.1 x 1.25 x 0.8 in.; carried with the included USB cable, AC adapter and neoprene case, the total weight is 6.4 oz.
    • Simple to use, the SteriPEN Freedom detects when the device is in water and automatically activates the UV lamp to begin purifying—no buttons to press!
    • Freedom is configured to treat 0.5 liter of water in 48 sec.; a green indicator light lets you know when the treatment is complete and the water is safe to drink
    • To purify 1 liter of water, simply treat the water twice
    • Integrated rechargeable battery is recharged by plugging the device into a computer, AC outlet or solar charger (sold separately) with the included USB cable
    • Includes an LED flashlight that's handy when the sun goes down; activate the flashlight by holding the Freedom horizontal and rotating your wrist 180° 3 times
    • Freedom requires no pumping, chemicals, test strips, extended timekeeping or filters; leaves no aftertaste, will not clog and does not require lubrication
    • SteriPEN system uses UV light rays instead of chemicals to purify water for drinking
    • Ultraviolet (UV-C) light rays safely sterilize clear water by destroying 99.99% of protozoa (including Giardia and Cryptosporidia ), bacteria and even viruses
    • Long used by municipal water districts and bottling companies, low-level UV-C light treats water safely; unit's light will not damage eyes or skin when used properly
    • SteriPEN protects you from risks that cause botulism, cholera, dysentery and typhoid, just to name a few
    • Small size fits most containers—use it in cups, mugs, water bottles and canteens; carries easily in a shirt pocket
    • SteriPEN Freedom turns itself off once ultraviolet treatment is complete; light source can be used up to 8,000 times!
    • Use only on clear water, as cloudy, sediment-laden water hinders effectiveness; FitsAll prefilter (sold separately) clears particulates and debris from water
    • SteriPEN Freedom water purifier includes a USB cable, AC adapter and neoprene carrying case

Comments about SteriPEN Freedom Water Purifier:

My friend and I each just bought one of these SteriPens to take on a 16 day trip to Galapagos and Peru given the uncertainty of the water. We bought this model because it is rechargeable. We both charged the product thoroughly before leaving. A few days into the trip, we had a situation where we needed to use the SteriPens. His turned on as expected when he put it in the water. Mine just blinked green and red (indicating a need for more charge). I borrowed my friend's SteriPen and recharged my product all night. The next morning, same thing -- green/red. I kept recharging and trying and the UV light never turned on -- it has never worked. The LED flashlight turns on (wow -- an expensive flashlight), but the actual UV water purification has never worked. I kept having to borrow my friend's product. Now I'm having difficulty returning it because it has been about 4 weeks since purchase (of which 16 days were on the trip). Not reliable. Next time, I'd opt for a different model/maker.

Comments about SteriPEN Freedom Water Purifier:

Used it for several backpacking trips, in cold mountain water and it worked perfectly every time. Recharge works well too. For dirty water I bring a coffee filter, and it did the job. Lightweight, efficient and does not leave any bad taste. Sweet!

Comments about SteriPEN Freedom Water Purifier:

Bought this to use in Argentina and Chile for 2 months of travel so we could recharge in the field. Checked before we left home that it worked, when we arrived in South America it would not work. (It flew from Alaska inside of a very well padded pot). After trying for several days e-mailed Steri-pen and their response was:
"Sorry you're having a problem with your Steripen. It sounds like you have a pen that needs a code update." Which is not possible overseas, so we carried the steripen for 2 months and never used it. So, returned it, as now that I am back home in Alaska I have no need for it and no trust either.

Comments about SteriPEN Freedom Water Purifier:

As with just about every Steripen model, this one can be a bit finicky. Still, every time I've used it, it has worked. Sometimes I've needed to dry off the sensors and made sure to keep it immersed properly. This has taken a few tries on occasion, but the Steripen has always come through for me. I don't know how long the battery will last in storage (I currently take the Freedom out every month or so to charge it. I'm sure to eventually forget to do this though- so I'm wondering how long it will be useable.) For my purposes, I'm able to get to a wall socket or computer every few days during my trips, so recharging hasn't been an issue during trips. The flashlight function is not a selling point- it certainly doesn't replace my headlamp. All-and-all, its good for what is intended to do.

Comments about SteriPEN Freedom Water Purifier:

I thought this was a dream come true. I took it to Africa where I was in both VERY rural situations, and in large modern cities. It was great for both... fast, unobtrusive, and effective. BUT
                  It stopped working consistently.
After 2 months of careful occasional use (it lived with my camera), and then using daily for 3 weeks, it began to malfunction. Not just with cold water...with any water. I consistently got the blinks that mean "lamp failure" and would need to knock it on my knee a few times to get it to work. Or sometimes, it just had to sit and I'd try again later. Not good when you are in a remote village. I loved it when it worked- but having such a dinky electronic thing as my sole source of purification outside of boiling made me feel pretty vulnerable. I can fix a pump that is malfunctioning... a plastic electronic thing... no hope. I returned it.

It was great for use in restraunts when I wanted to drink tap water and be descreet... I couldn't do that with a pump... but as far as consistency goes... I would wait for a later model that has had these issues resolved. The idea is great, but something needs some adjusting.

first one I got I charged all day, used it three times, just testing it out, and it died, charged it again and the same thing, then the thing was flickering so I swapped it out at rei, second one was working fine, tested it three times, thought I was good to go, next day tested it on my morning water bottle, the light blinks 3 times red 1 time green, I read the instructions and it says lamp failure, as debating whether to try a third time or just downgrade to the battery one.
