Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not Reliable My friend and I each just bought one of these SteriPens to take on a 16 day trip to Galapagos and Peru given the uncertainty of the water. We bought this model because it is rechargeable. We both charged the product thoroughly before leaving. A few days into the trip, we had a situation where we needed to use the SteriPens. His turned on as expected when he put it in the water. Mine just blinked green and red (indicating a need for more charge). I borrowed my friend's SteriPen and recharged my product all night. The next morning, same thing -- green/red. I kept recharging and trying and the UV light never turned on -- it has never worked. The LED flashlight turns on (wow -- an expensive flashlight), but the actual UV water purification has never worked. I kept having to borrow my friend's product. Now I'm having difficulty returning it because it has been about 4 weeks since purchase (of which 16 days were on the trip). Not reliable. Next time, I'd opt for a different model/maker.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Totally defective I charged and tested the unit a few times at home. All good. I headed out on a 4-day trek across Kodiak Island and on the first day I treated a liter of water. No problems. Later that first day I tried to treat some more water and got the dreaded "one green flash followed by 3 red flashes, repeating." That means a UV lamp failure: I need to replace the lamp. What? In a unit that has treated less than 5 total liters of water?? I tried the unit a few more times always with the same result. I also tried recharging it with my 5v USB battery supply. No change: still offering the change lamp warning. The rest of the trip I had to go well out of my way to find water that I did not suspect of containing any nasty organisms. That meant springs and snow melt, high in the alpine. All-the-while carrying this totally worthless and completely defective unit. Now, back at home, it does not turn on at all. No LED flashes of any sort. Sheesh. 20 minutes later it decides to work again. Totally random. This thing is utterly worthless for backcountry water treatment. Add to this that it has a "passed QC" sticker right on it, though someone at the factory torqued the internal mounting screws so tight that the clear plastic is cracked in the base. "Passed QC"? Really?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ok, its a bit finicky As with just about every Steripen model, this one can be a bit finicky. Still, every time I've used it, it has worked. Sometimes I've needed to dry off the sensors and made sure to keep it immersed properly. This has taken a few tries on occasion, but the Steripen has always come through for me. I don't know how long the battery will last in storage (I currently take the Freedom out every month or so to charge it. I'm sure to eventually forget to do this though- so I'm wondering how long it will be useable.) For my purposes, I'm able to get to a wall socket or computer every few days during my trips, so recharging hasn't been an issue during trips. The flashlight function is not a selling point- it certainly doesn't replace my headlamp. All-and-all, its good for what is intended to do.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from will work for short day trips only So I took this on my speed hike (27-21 miles per day) of the John Muir Trail, in which I started alone, and then was joined by 2 (at Tuolumne) and another 2 (at Reds Meadows) friends. My plan was to use this while alone and then get water from my friends later in the trip. The main problem with this product (I think) is the LED flashlight. This is the stupidest idea. If you are planning on hiking or running in the dark, bring a headlamp, with REAL illuminating power. So there is supposedly a specific way of rotating the pen while in the horizontal position to turn the light on and off. However, I noticed the light had turned on several times without my doing the maneuver. Conversely, it wouldn't turn off without my repeating it a few times. End result-- you end up draining the battery and running out of filtering power far short of what you expected-- not a good thing when out in the backcountry. I became dependent on my companions much earlier than I'd expected. Next time I am using the Sawyer system. I MIGHT decide to keep this, since it is still the lightest water purifying option aside from iodine. But only if I can keep in vertically oriented and only for single day hikes or runs. Since this is the not limited use this for which this is designed, I am giving it 2 stars. This might work for you if you understands its inherent flaw and potential peril.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from code update required......useless Bought this to use in Argentina and Chile for 2 months of travel so we could recharge in the field. Checked before we left home that it worked, when we arrived in South America it would not work. (It flew from Alaska inside of a very well padded pot). After trying for several days e-mailed Steri-pen and their response was: "Sorry you're having a problem with your Steripen. It sounds like you have a pen that needs a code update." Which is not possible overseas, so we carried the steripen for 2 months and never used it. So, returned it, as now that I am back home in Alaska I have no need for it and no trust either.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked perfectly! Used it for several backpacking trips, in cold mountain water and it worked perfectly every time. Recharge works well too. For dirty water I bring a coffee filter, and it did the job. Lightweight, efficient and does not leave any bad taste. Sweet!
