Comments about Dynafit TLT Radical ST Randonee Bindings:

I spent most of the season agonizing on whether to get the new Radical or the old standby Vertical that is tried and tested. I finally went with the radical after a demo, because I really liked the new heel elevator system. I got mine mounted and inspected and had a pin on the heel plate (which may have been what caused the plate to break in the other review). This pin was deemed defective by Dynafit this year and they have sent replacements to all the dealers. I had mine replaced with the new pin before use. I weigh 215 lbs, and potentially put a lot of force on my bindings. I've been out 5 days touring on these binding so far and really like them. I did the Haute route last year on the Vertical STs, and I find the Radicals much more ergonomic on the uphill. They are much easier to switch amongst the risers heights than the Verticals, and they easily adjust with just the basket of your ski pole rather than pushing really hard with your pole tip and having to contort yourself and bend over to do it by hand half the time like I've found with the verticals. Some people have criticized the Radicals because the heel unit only rotates in one direction to get back into ski mode, and so you rotate the heel piece 270 degrees from the touring position rather than just back 90 degrees on the Verticals. I've not found this to be a problem, because really, you are taking the ski off anyway to take off your skins to go downhill and you're just gonna rotate the heel piece back to ski position by hand then anyway. I've never found myself in a situation where I'm using the touring mode without skins on, so I really don't see this as an issue. Also, contrary to the other reviewer, I find the new toe piece guides on the Radicals INFINITELY easier to get your boot into than the Verticals. I honestly think that if you don't find the Radicals easier to snap into on the toe than the Verticals, then you aren't doing right.

After five days of touring, I've had no issues with durability or breakage. I'm a heavy guy, and I might wear these out more quickly than my Verticals, and I don't know about long term durability yet. So far so good. I'm giving them 4 stars only because of the unknown. Mine have been great so far, butt I must admit I'm worried since I've heard of so many other people and reviews having issues. I must say, everyone I know who has had the pin replaced as instructed by Dynafit has been really happy.

Comments about Dynafit TLT Radical ST Randonee Bindings:

On the first tour with my new bindings, I was traveling uphill with the heel piece in the maximum height position. I slipped and came down a little harder than usual; the plate the heel lifter is attached to shattered (see photo). I have since read about this happening to other people. Between the recall and now this plate shattering issue, Dynafit has done a poor job with this binding. I exchanged it for the Dynafit Vertical, which so far I really like. I also find the Vertical much easier to get in and out of and much more durable compared to the Radical.
