Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe:
I have the older version of this axe that doesn't include the knife in the handle, so aside from that it's the same. I've had it for over ten years. In spite of the questionable looking blade molding construction, I can tell you that there is no way you will break it. Also, there is no way you will break the handle. Be sure to bring a sharpening solution though because it won't hold an edge very well, which is the only minus. If you want a bigger axe, don't complain about this one being too small - go buy a bigger axe - and have fun packing up that 14er. If you want a warm fire that will last you for hours, get this, spend 15 minutes preparing your wood and get to cooking.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe:
I must have gotten an earlier model because I have had this for about two years and mine does not have a strap to hold in the knife. I already had to buy a replacement knife because it fell out in the middle of the night while I was searching for firewood. I have since started taking the knife out before using. The strap seems like a good improvement. It is small but that is why I bought it. Good for backpacking and keeping weight down.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe:
This is a very decent piece of equipment. I'm writing to elaborate on previous members review on the dullness of the axe and difficulty using the axe.
The axe is fairly dull. You won't be able to chop down a >4" tree with ease and it's not designed for a full swing. That being said, I think the axe is good for chopping small (dry) branches or splitting precut firewood. I do a one-hand short swing (not holding firewood with the other hand) and able to split firewood just fine.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe:
I bought this small axe understanding that I would be buying precut bundles of wood and the need was solely for breaking down said pieces of wood for kindling. I usually take great joy in doing labor intensive work, but using this axe became a chore. The handle is just too short. My knuckles incurred a few abrasions when following through on my swings. In addition, the rubber strap holding the knife in place was bothersome. Because I was choking down on the axe to provide more clearance for my knuckles, my grip was affected because of the moving rubber strap. Finally, solely my opinion, the axe is too head heavy. I never felt I had good control. Perhaps the whole emptied-out handle to store a knife is a bit ill-conceived? With only one other choice in the REI lineup, I will have to shop elsewhere for an axe.

Comments about Gerber Gator Combo Axe:
I needed a small hatchet for cutting some kindling for a camp fire. I usually backpack, so I look for lightweight gear that I can carry. Unfortunately when I got this home and took it out of the package I was terribly disappointed. The handle is very short and so I wouldn't recommend using this without wearing a leather work glove for fear of pinching your hand between the handle and the log. The knife that nests within the handle is a neat feature but is secured via a shoddy strap and a magnet. I can see over-stretching and breaking the strap very easily. Since the handled has been hollowed for the knife it also seems as if the design is flawed and the handle is waiting to be broken in half by one miss-guided swing. The axe head seems to be secured via an over-molding process and I'm not really sure how that will withstand the test of time. There was extra plastic in spots that made it seem of poor quality. I should have probably gotten the conventional wooden handled hatchet from my local hardware store.
On the plus side the darn thing was sharp and did work for its intended use (with a leather work glove to protect my fingers from pinches).
