      Comments about Baffin Hike Soft-Shell Winter Boots - Men's - 2010 Closeout:

I was looking for a boot that was affordable, lightweight, and warm that I could use every day during the snowy Minnesota winter to walk the mile (each way) back and forth to work. For the first week, these boots were brilliant. However, there is a problem. There is a join exactly where your big toe bends when you take each step - where the rubber toe covering with writing on it that alleges "Baffin Polar Proven" meets the fabric bit. There is glue here which supposedly is going to keep the shoe together. After just two weeks of wear, this join has come apart on both the right and left boot. To be absolutely clear what the problem is: there are holes in my nice new (2 week old) boots. And I am worried that there will soon be more, because just slightly further back along the mid-section of the boot, the single-stitching is starting to look strained. I guess I'll try to repair it with some kind of shoe glue, but I rather suspect that the "waterproof" claim has gone down the tubes and that I will now have to purchase another pair of boots. So much for saving money. Very disappointing.

        Comments about Baffin Hike Soft-Shell Winter Boots - Men's - 2010 Closeout:

I bought these boots with my member coupon and couldn't pass up the price on them. They are ultra lightweight, very waterproof, have an aggressive sole, and VERY warm. The thing I struggle with is that they are a "light hiker" style boot (i.e. short height), but are so waterproof and warm, that they feel like a snow pac boot. They are a little too warm for me, but they are made in Canada, so they know what's needed for the cold. They are too short for deep snow work, but if you suffer from cold feet, these are a great lightweight boot for you. They are extremely well made and comfortable, too. And yes, they do run a 1/2 size too small, so order them a 1/2 size larger than your foot size.

Great service from REI, thanks. These boots seem very nice especially for the price here. There is no break in period. I will say they seem to run small though. i wear a size 7 but after reading a few of the reviews on other sites i decided to order an 8. Glad I did. The length was good and the was room in the toe area. I ended up adding gel inserts under the foot bed, which made the boots even comfortable. If you want a light weight casual warm boot these are for you.

          Comments about Baffin Hike Soft-Shell Winter Boots - Men's - 2010 Closeout:

Bought these in mid-October for winter hiking. They're warm and comfortable, but by late January I had to bring them back to REI. They were coming apart at the seams, particularly along the sides near the toe. I only had around 30 miles on them by the time they became useless. If you plan on doing any serious hiking in the winter, pass these up and apply the money to something better. I'm glad that REI's outstanding customer service allowed me to return these well used boots.

I would still have these if the glue didn't come apart at the toe. See MNWolf's review, I had the same exact experience. Other than that they were great, but I returned them since them since they were falling apart after about 5 uses.

These boots fit me great, hugs my ankle area nicely. Great boot for cold weather hiking but you just have to take it easy in rock gardens because the rocks will tear up the material on the sides of the boot a lot faster than leather.

Was looking for boots for winter hiking and snowshoeing. I started wearing them on my daily 2 q/4 walks on a path a trail and across a field to get used to them/break them in. First the tab on th laces broke; ok, not a big deal. Then the rivet holding the laces to the boot pulled out. Not good. I can't afford to have them fail on the trail (in winter). They are going back.

Because of the reviews saying the boot ran short, I bought a 12, my normal shoe size is 11. Not only were they a little long, but the volume was enormous. I stacked 2 insoles in the boot and there was still too much volume. You would have to have a very thick foot for these to work for you. Unfortunately these are going back.

I bought these boots on clearance, crossing my fingers that they'd be decent boots. They exceeded my expectations. They are comfortable, lace up easily, are very lightweight, and waterproof. The sole is a bit stiff from the toes back, but it has a nice aggressive pattern for good traction. The only negative is that they are a bit too warm for a light hiker style boot. I know they're winter boots, but they look and feel like a traditional light hiker that I'd wear in warm weather mountains, but they will make my feet roast in the summer. They are also a bit short to wear in deep snow. I prefer taller boots so snow doesn't get into them from top. As others have said, they run about half size small, so order them a half size bigger. Other than that, a fantastic, well made boot-especially for the price.
