Comments about K2 Thraxis Triple Boa Snowboard Boots - 2011/2012:

Soft comfortable boots are easy to find. However, to find a stiff comfortable boot, and one as versatile as this, is nearly impossible. In about 10 seconds I can completely change the feel of the boots between a looser fit for park/pipe, or crank them down and lay down trenches in the Minnesota ice rinks for slopes that I call home.

Mens size 9, widish feet. These boots came in on the scale at 2lbs 7oz each, 5lbs 3oz both. Extremly simple to get in and out of. Love the fur, and I'm a guy...

I originally tried on the K2 Maysis, a double boa (inside and outside lace system) medium flex boot and they fit great. I could have stopped there, but since I'm not in the market for boots too often, I thought it due diligence to try every other medium flex boot on the shelf.

I tried the DC Judge : The width was good, comfortable, warm, and easy lacing. Unfortunately I could force my feet forward in the boot to where I felt insufficient cushioning in the toe space. This would be extremely painful for hard heelside turns and landings. No good.

I tried the Salomon Faction Boa: Again a medium flex boot. Good cushion, good width, but lacked the lacing adjustability. I liked the metatarsal bump thing, but for how long, because I could see it possibly a source of pain. Was softer than the 32 STX so these were eliminated on those grounds.

Had to give the Vans Matlock a try: Medium flex boot. Too high of arch for my feet and I felt the calf area lacked support. I also thought the hook and loop fastener seemed a little strange to me at the top of the boot.

Burton Ruler: Medium flex boot. Nothing bad to say, but despite all the complaints of Boa systems, still perfectly happy with mine, and love the speed of adjustability and repair so I wasn't looking for laces (I.E. I've had the grossgrain tear out of my boots before, which is more a pain than replacing a cable) Not as stiff as the Medium flex Maysis.

32 STX: I actually bought these after trying on the above reviewed boots. As a medium flex boot (stiffer than the Salomon, they are excellent. Extremely plush... Light weight. After wearing around the house for an hour, the mild envelope of cushion became slightly painful. If I would have needed another medium flex boot, I would have had to go up a half size, because with anything other than a thin athletic sock would have not fit in the boot with my foot. Did I say plenty of cushion, though, but small like no jamming of the least, to the toes. This is the only boot that I felt wasn't true to size, maybe 1/2 size too small. Unfortunately when finally strapped to my board, they were too soft of flex for me. Back to REI I go, to find a stiff boot.

Put on the K2 Thraxis:
Found out I could adjust the inner boa position to find the sweet spot on my ankle to hold it down. Beautiful! Can you do that with the Maysis? Yes, but they are a softer flex. Cranked down, they hold tight, but not stiff like the Thraxis. I love that I can adjust the lower outer laces and adjust the ankle hold for the rails, boxes, or just buttering around. Crank it down a little for some tables and kickers, then make 'em bleed for some hard carving for BX and with the GS'ers.

Other stiff boots I tried when I returned the STX for the Thraxis:

Burton Ion: Inner shell kept loosening up. I felt it tough to tighten the outer laces where I needed the support. Comfortable.

Salomon Malamut: Great Non boa lacing system. Easy to adjust the different zones. Would have been my second choice. Comfortable, good cushion, warm.

Vans Cirro Boa: Again, Vans, with the high arches. Not good for my feet. Felt bulky.

Final thoughts:

About 1 hour on the first time out with these boots (hot lapping the park - we have tow ropes whereas no stopping is necessary in the park), my feet wouldn't stop cramping. Popped the 6 boas, took my back foot out, and instant relief followed. 5 minutes later dropped back in and my feet were home...
