Comments about Surly Pugsley Bike - 2012:
This is the greatest for exploring the backcountry. It's a fantastic ride on road or off. It will handle anything you through at it. Researched it extensively before I bought, great deal at REI between the service and rebate. I use as a regular mountain bike, but with big fat cushy wheels. It's not fast, but it's fun.

Comments about Surly Pugsley Bike - 2012:
I have ridden the Pug, and currently own a Surly Moonlander. To own one is to love one! My $4000 mtn bike sits at home these days.
I ride this bike on Fire Island, NY on a mix of sand and boardwalks. When the tide is low, I often ride 3 or 4 mile segments along the ocean. Believe me, this is a smoking workout! Your calves will be ready to jump out of their sockets when you are done.
The bottom line is that the Surly steel frames provide a smoother ride, and are stronger than the alumninum frames of the competition. The offset frame also ensures that the chain does not hit the tires in the lower gears. At 37 lbs for a steel frame bike, and 36 for an aluminum one, you will not notice the difference in weight.
If you want to ride under these conditions, this is your bike! If you are unsure, borrow one and try it before you buy. This bike forces you to develop your strength and endurance, so you have been forewarned!

Comments about Surly Pugsley Bike - 2012:
I rode a Pugsley at the Indiana Dunes, which is the southern tip of Lake Michigan. I rode on the beach and even rode up part of a large sand dune. This thing is a trip to ride, it bounces with low tire pressure and floats over stuff. It is not a bike for riding on streets. It's a very different creature but has capabilities only a fat tire bike has.
