The "atomic" G-Shock is a great watch for outdoor activity or work. It's very durable, to hits, vibration, water, dust, heat and...to the point the LCD blacks up, cold. It can take a major hit and neither the case nor strap are worse for it.

It's Accurate: first, it's a digital watch and they tend to be real accurate. Second, it calibrates to the US Atomic Clock every day, so it's always spot-on correct (like your cell phone, which does the same thing via the carrier) and it auto-adjusts for Daylight Savings. It's literally "always right".

The "solar" means no batteries. My old G-Shock survived many many things, but the eventual death was due to seal failure after the third battery change. Solars? No problem: just use them inside under lights or outside in the day and you don't need a battery. It will hold charge for several days, too.

I swim, MTB, hammer, trim brush, skateboard, backpack and pretty much do everything with the G-Shock. A great, durable watch. Look for sales, though.

I decided on this watch before traveling to Southeast Asia. I wanted a durable watch that was not too flashy that it would attract attention from thieves. It performed beautifully in all conditions, including swimming in saltwater, and I liked that I did not have to worry about it in the rain. It does not have the correct radio to set itself via the atomic clock function in Asia, though; you would need a Japanese Casio for that. I have worn it almost daily for the last few years, except when I need a more formal watch. I wear it snowboarding and I've never seen the LCD go black from the cold, probably down to around 15 degrees F. The raised plastic bezel does have some nicks and scratches in it, but it does seem to do a good job of protecting the screen from getting scratched.

My go-to timepiece for anywhere that I'm not sure what to expect. Got it for as a gift 4 years ago and while I've gone through several other casual watches, this is always on me for any backcountry work. All around rugged timepiece and self-charging and updating.

Also, if you are a diver, I would recommend this. It is well-priced for the quality and having the time display as well as the stopwatch function is great for underwater or just about anywhere.
