Perfect tie down solution
Our roof rack does not have a very long front to rear span so I knew I would want to put straps on the front of our kayaks down to the front of the car to keep the air from lifting them while driving. I didn't want straps or rope to rub the paint on the front of the hood if tied to the bumper. These straps attach under the hood to a fender bolt. Flip them out to use them and flip them back under the hood to hide them. They work perfect.
Webbing doesn’t last
I bought these straps less than two years ago for my Subaru Outback. The car has the perfect bolts just inside the engine bay so I was excited for this quick solution to my kayak carrying problem! These straps worked well, however a year and a half later I hooked up the strap to tie down my kayak and the webbing disintegrated into powder when gently pulled on! I tugged on the other strap and it also tore apart. The webbing can’t withstand long-term engine heat. I’m giving it two stars because at least the price is reasonable. I’ve since bought the removable straps with rubber T-bars from the same company.
solves the problem of no anchor points
As Camry owners (and doubtless owners of some other cars) know, there is no solid place to anchor front or back tie-downs on these cars, as needed for hauling kayaks or canoes on roof racks. A trailer hitch will do for the rear anchors. For the front, these hood loops solved the problem nicely on my 2005 Camry. I can tuck the loops under the lowered hood when not in use. REI also sells Seattle Sports "quick loops" that don't require bolting on, but the quick loops are held in place only by the lowered hood.
Just what I needed.
My car doesn't have any convenient attach points, so having these thing sticking out from under my hood has made my life soooo much easier. Quick and easy to install if you are in the slightest way mechanically inclined. You can tuck them under the hood when not in-use.
Works a few times.
Lasted roughly a year in the Arizona heat. Straps were easy to install on our Forester and worked well. We hauled from Phoenix to Lake Powell and to the local Phoenix lakes a handful of times. The straps began to become brittle and tore where it makes contact with the hood. A cheaper, potentially more durable solution would be to just buy some tubular webbing and a manual rivet kit.
Worked well until they didn't
I was quite happy with these straps until I went to use them and found that one of the straps had become shredded and unusable. One side only- the other loop was fine. My guess is that some sort of turbulence beneath the hood thrashed the webbing against nearby sharp edges while driving at highway speeds on a long trip. I'd had them for several years with no problems. Rubber banding the loop into a bundle may have helped, but it's too late now! I'll replace them with the T-shaped straps sold at REI also- slightly less convenient but they can be completely removed when not in use.
Loops Worked Great!
Very clever! I used these on the front, under the hood, to tie in the Bow lines for Kayaks on a Subaru Outback.
These work well enough and are an easy install.
These worked well being mounted underneath the hood and trunk of my car on the side I intended to transport my kayak on. They stick out for easy attaching of retention straps or can be tucked in for a cleaner look. The only reason I gave them four stars instead of five is because the grommet was too thick for some of my options and I had to either buy a longer same thread bolt or reconsider my mounting location. I opted for the latter and chose a radiator mounting bracket. It's been thumbs up.
Tie downs
These straps were secured under the hood using existing hardware on the frame. They give a tie down for lines from the canoe. Preformed well.
Get my to the water!
This is such a simple piece of gear, but so crucial to safe transport. I am on my second pair in maybe a decade.
