I haven't owned these shoes for more than 3 hours, but I wanted to write with my first impressions before Merrell decides to change this design in some way. :-)
These shoes are very comfortable and stylish (I got them in black). They are low profile enough to be worn with skinny jeans, but not so low profile that they can't be worn with slightly baggier pants (Converse Chuck Taylors, for example, look silly with my khakis).
The sole seems beefy and grippy enough to survive lots of walking, even maybe on some well-groomed outdoor trails in a pinch (I got these as everyday shoes as well as a potential choice of "one pair of shoes only" for lightweight travel). The sturdy sole does *not* however make these shoes so sporty looking that you couldn't wear them for a casual evening out, or on vacation in a European city.
In terms of fit, I'm a size 9 and the 9 fits me perfectly (with an appropriate amount of toe room to spare, but not too much). The 8.5 would be too small for me, and the 9.5 is a tad too big. I wear a 9 in Chuck Taylors and have a bit of extra length in them too. My feet are narrow enough that I sometimes have problems finding slip-on shoes that fit me (they're either too short or too wide/loose), although I can wear any lace-up shoe in my size (no need to buy special widths). The width on these is perfect for me, so if you have *very* wide feet they may be slightly on the narrow side for you (thank you Merrell for designing these shoes with this width!).
I will update this rating in the future with information about longevity and long-term comfort.

After two weeks the rubber was separating from the uppers and the leather (if it is leather) is getting creased like paper. They feel like flippers to walk in. Merrel has gone for cheaper production costs at the user's expense like other once-great manufacturers of outdoor equipment.
Service and delivery comments:
REI's service was excellent as ever

Shoe looked and felt promising after having them for three weeks and a total of about 40 hrs of actual wear time. But, now the leather is separating from the sole and toe protector. For costing [$]0 and being Merrell, one would expect a better product.

Best shoes ever. The most comfortable shoes ever. I look forward to wearing these. I recommend getting nice wool socks to complete the deal. I will buy these again.

I bought these shoes for a month long trip in Europe and the were absolutely perfect. The best casual shoes I've ever owned. Also great with jeans and just casual wear.
