Comments about Merrell Chameleon 4 Ventilator Gore-Tex Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
So far so good with the Chameleon 4. Feels the same size as the Chameleon 3, a bit of extra toe room but the glove like fit takes care of that and keeps it snug on my foot. Still nervous that the rubber tip is going to peel off as was the case with the Chameleon 3, but we'll see what happens. I wear my Chameleon 3's EVERYDAY to work (on a hard, concrete surface most of the time) and its safe to say i'd never wear another shoe (i tried, it stunk), which is why i purchased the 4's...i should note that i've only been wearing them for a week thus far, but felt obligated to post a review as there weren't any up yet. Its nice to see that Merrell hasn't strayed from something that works!

Comments about Merrell Chameleon 4 Ventilator Gore-Tex Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
I bought these shoes a few months ago and have only worn them about 15 - 20 times for everyday use. About 2 or 3 short day hikes (Nothing tactical). I noticed a tear on the outside of the left shoe about 3 inches long. I was really disappointed with the short life span from nothing more then common wear and considering it cost [$]. Perhaps it was a manufacturer defect, I will be returning them for another brand.

Comments about Merrell Chameleon 4 Ventilator Gore-Tex Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
I have a *very* difficult time finding shoes that fit. I'm female, with feet that are apparently wide/thin/long in all the wrong places, certainly for most women's shoes. I've had to return FOUR different pairs of hiking boots to REI due to terrible blisters and random friction burns (each pair recommended by store personnel doing their baffled best to help). Then I purchased these... no blisters, no burns. Pure comfort and unfailing support. Hiked 12 miles yesterday and my feetsies are doing just fine. A GREAT shoe, albeit a little on the ugly side... orange and brown, really Merrell?

Comments about Merrell Chameleon 4 Ventilator Gore-Tex Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
I really like these shoes, they are my daily go-to shoe, but they also perform well in the mountains. The water resistance is good, and the traction is adequate. For more extended endeavors, I prefer a stiffer shoe, but these are wonderful shoes for short trips and around town

Comments about Merrell Chameleon 4 Ventilator Gore-Tex Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
This is my first foray into Merrell's for serious hiking. I hike about 100 miles a month on light-to-moderate trails (nothing I would call mountain hiking, since we don't have mountains here, but fairly serious woods trails) and have worn through most other shoes (the tread) that I've owned in 4-5 months. So I tried these Merrell's because they're supposed to be sturdy and last longer. After about a month so far, I can report that the tread looks as good as new (minus the dirt/mud I've caked on them of course). I have every reason to believe they will last a good long time.
They are fairly comfortable to wear, heavy enough to support me and protect my feet from whatever I'm walking on, but not so heavy as to make walking/hiking difficult.
My only real complaint is that after a month (about 100 miles) I'm *still* breaking them in, it seems. They were stiff when I bought them so as I walked they would ride up and down on my heels a little bit. I've worked on them, bending them and trying to loosen them up, but they still do this. It's not a huge bother. I have good socks so it isn't causing blisters. Maybe it's just something I need to get used to. Part of the problem could be me: I have large feet (size 14), so someone else with a smaller foot and shoe may not have this problem. But part of the problem could be the design of the shoe. I'm no expert, but most other hiking shoes I've owned break in during the first month and are fine after that. I'm still waiting for these.

Comments about Merrell Chameleon 4 Ventilator Gore-Tex Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
I just purchased these last week and had a chance to do two different types of hikes this past weekend. The first was lots of scrambling and rock climbing, nothing difficult, just more then a walk in the park. I was a bit concerned about breaking these in on this type of hike but they were fine.
The second hike was pretty much a walk in the park, faster pace, level ground more or less.
Both hikes were approx. 7 miles and my feet felt fine during and after the hikes.
Strange thing is that I was fitted for a size 12 in the store and told that was my correct size. First time I've ever worn a 12. All other boots/shoes have been 10.5 or 11's except for a pair of heavy hiking boots I purposely ordered an 11.5 because I always plan on wearing think socks with them.
Service and delivery comments:
Joy was a Joy to deal with in the shoe department.

Comments about Merrell Chameleon 4 Ventilator Gore-Tex Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
Used everyday in Afghanistan in place of full size Rocky SV2's, excellent traction and stability. Great in all weather conditions! Very comfortable in all conditions/environments. Great on unstable rock beds, wet muddy streets and paths. No issues after 30 days of constant wear in Afghanistan, no peeling of toe cover etc. Highly recommend these to anyone on the fence of purchase.

Comments about Merrell Chameleon 4 Ventilator Gore-Tex Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
This is a very comfortable shoe and the best I have owned. I went through several pairs before I settled on this.
My only issue is that I can not wear hiking socks since the width is about 5mm to narrow. If you have slightly wider feet than normal then it will be tight with bigger socks.

Comments about Merrell Chameleon 4 Ventilator Gore-Tex Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
When looking for a good hiking shoe I look for two primary components. One, Weight. A pound on your feet is like five on your back, you know. Two, arch support/rigidity. The first thing I noticed is that for the support and tread that I get in an over-ankle boot, I was able to get that in this lighter shoe. One thing I've noticed on trails is that sharp rocks and highly technical areas on the trail really beat up my arches. This shoe provides that support. I did a four mile loop today which was pretty much all technical and rocky terrain. My feet couldn't feel better.
The only con that I can find for this shoe is the ankle support. I do have weak ankles, and thus need to be careful having such a low shoe. However, I wouldn't fault this particular shoe for this. Happens to be a feature that comes with this style of shoe. For my long trips, I plan on using velcro or lace-up ankle supports to mitigate this.
It was not especially cold today and there was no water on the trail. So I couldn't test the waterproof aspect, but upon inspection they look to made pretty well.

Comments about Merrell Chameleon 4 Ventilator Gore-Tex Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
Buying my second pair so when the first eventually wears out, I'll have a back-up ready. I hike daily wearing them (about an hour) on non-challenging preservation land, but have worn these shoes on 15 mile plus treks over 4000-5000 NH peaks in the White Mountains wearing a day pack close to 20 pounds. These shoes are firmer than some might like, but that's what attracted me to this model instead of others made by Merrell. Don't expect them to become much more flexible after a break-in period.
