Comments about Mountain Hardwear Mountain Tech Jacket - Men's:
First off, I'm 6'2" 170-175 pounds (athletic build) and the large fits me exactly as a mid-layer to outer-layer should; it has enough room for a fleece and shirt underneath, but fits snug enough for a water-proof shell to fit over it. The neck is comfortable, the sleeves are long enough, and I have enough room to move without it being baggy. I bought the sapphire blue/black and it looks cool enough, but I only wear this for backcountry trips, backpacking, day-hikes, and trail runs. I spend my time mostly in the San Bernardino Mountains, San Gabriels, Sierra Nevadas, and Santa Anas as I live in Southern California (temporarily), and the jacket is perfect as an outer layer unless it's winter, or it's a rainy day. The pit zips provide excellent ventilation when you're hiking on a day with strong wind gusts, yet is otherwise warm. It doesn't have a hood, but I prefer hats or a beanie anyway, since hoods have always made me feel claustrophobic, and they also affect my peripheral vision, which I don't enjoy on steep, rocky terrain. The pockets seem to be in an odd place until you strap on your large backpack for extended trips and realize the hip belts interfere with normal pockets. The higher placement allows you to access your pockets if need be, and besides, who hikes with their hands in their pockets? Obviously no jacket is perfect for every condition, and in my experience, no jacket works for every person since we all have different preferences and body types, but overall I've found this jacket to be a great asset on the trail and I can honestly recommend it. I hope this helps!

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Mountain Tech Jacket - Men's:
Once again Mountain Hardwear comes out with another super cool and useful item of clothing! I've had this jacket for almost a year, and I love when I have a chance to wear it.
I'm a minimalist backcountry hiker/camper, and an urban, trail, and commuting cyclist. I looked at this jacket for 7 months before I finally broke down and bought it, and never regretted it. Just regret not being able to wear it more! This jacket is styling, but that wasn't what first drew me to it. pros and cons.
Pros: This jacket has armpit zippers that are VERY adjustable. Why don't more jackets have them? A must if you're a backcountry hiker/camper in cooler weather. With backpack straps closing off the air flow to your arms your core might cool, but your arms and sides don't. Those armpit zippers help a ton in regulating heat. Great as a liner under a rain jacket with pit zips too (Marmot Oracle). Water resistant, but not waterproof. Great jacket for 40 degrees and above by itself, lower if you have a good shell.
Cons: Hand warmer pockets are awkward... The angled zippers can be annoying. Only thing I can think off.
I've used this jacket around town, over 600 miles of trails, and 1000 miles of cycling in less than a year. Chicago to Atlanta, a great jacket. There is no other jacket that comes close to the mutli-tasking this jacket does.

I really love the look. I got charcol and black in medium... Wore it for a week and decided as a 5 '7" guy, this was too big. I wore it with it switched at the waist, went for a run and it would fall to below my butt. .... So I order a second one in small. This time the neck felt very tight for how high the collar comes up. Now that I wore it 3 camp trips and a ski day, I really. Really love it. With out the pit zips it would be to hot for wearing to work, ir on a jog or under a rain jacket. With the large one direction pit zips you can dump heat fast. I recommend going small if your under 140. Medium if under 160, and the rest of you giants can figure it out :). Last note, the forearm stiching goes right a cross the elbow.... Very uncomfortable for sitting at a desk and typing. I'm wearing it right now.

Great Jacket, used my dividend to buy this and don't regret it one bit. Tried on the North ButtFace and it felt cheap, tried this on and you can tell the difference. Quality doesn't lie. Great jacket, little pricy but from what everyone else says it lasts and is durable. So I shouldn't have to buy another softshell for awhile.

Best jacket i have ever bought. Hands down, worth the money. Mountain Hardware does it again. They make great products, and it shows. This keeps the wind off your body, and allows freedom of movement. Perfect for layering if need be. Stay away from the overpriced North Face culture, and get something that actually will keep you warm, and i know several people who have taken the North Face back and went after this item!

Comments about Mountain Hardwear Mountain Tech Jacket - Men's:
I bought this as a replacement for my Mountain Hardware Tech Jacket that I bought in Dec. 2002...that's 9 years guys. It's still in good shape, just stained so good for working/camping/hiking just not as casual-wear i.e. all-around-jacket.
I was a bit hesitant at first because I didn't see a reason to alter the design. The only thing this jacket lacked...it still lacks...it's not waterproof, but it's not designed for that either. I didn't know anything about the new windproofing (Air Shield). My old one had the Gore-Tex Windstopper which worked awesome.
The sizing is slightly different now. My old one is a medium and fits great. I had to go with a large with this purchase as the medium was too tight under my arms. Otherwise, it fits the same as the older medium. Just keep in mind, you will want to try this on before purchasing it. I tried on a few other styles from Mountain Hardware and saw the same thing there too...the company has changed its sizing.
I bought this jacket before my Christmas/New Years trip to Essen, Germany. It was in the 40's and raining/misting/generally damp and cool the entire time I was there (but I had an amazing time). It was cold and windy at night too and we were outside a lot and I never got cold or wet, but I wasn't in hard or driving rain either.
I am also an amateur photographer so being comfortable while trying to get a good shot is paramount and this jacket provided that for me beyond a doubt. It was comfortable inside and out, including the airports and planes. It definitely kept the wind and light rain/mist off me. Since then, I've been out in 20F weather with wind chills in the low teens and lower with nothing but a t-shirt on under it and I have never been cold. The new Air Shield windproofing works just as good as the older Gore-Tex Windstopper. You loose nothing with the new product and the exterior has less fleece, thus less care needed. It cleans very easy. If it requires more than a damp cloth you have to make sure to use cleaning products (e.g. Nikwax Tech Wash and TX.Direct wash-in treatment for waterproof fabrics...it does help) made for specialized fabrics or you can ruin it. I wouldn't risk it. I do miss the internal breast pocket, but that's no reason to overlook or discount this jacket.

I walk 3 to 5 miles every morning and even in Michigan's cold and windy winter this jacket works great...on colder mornings I add a second lighter fleese under it.

Great jacket for hiking or other outdoor activities. It's not real heavy so don't expect it to be super warm if you are standing around. It's warm if you are moving and or have a long sleeve shirt under it. It's great in the wind, decent in wet conditions but if it starts pooring rain eventually you will get wet. It has a snug fit (not a lot of room for heavy shirts). I like the fit, it's not so sloppy like many jackets and you can put another coat on over this one if you needed the layers. The side pockets are a little high which is annoying until you have a back pack on with a waist strap then it's perfect. I've had this jacket for a year now and am really happy with it.

I own the older style, the one with the inside pocket on the left breast.
I like it. It's killer windblocker. It's a killer insulator if you have something underneath, otherwise it's NOT warm. It's not meant to be.
My girlfriend bought me this a few years ago as a birthday gift.
It doesn't fit like other MH articles do. It's a bit too large. Probably because it's meant to layer, though I would like to wear it without anything under it in warmer seasons by itself.
It is however, invincible. I've tortured this garment with oil changes, crazy spills over cliff sides, dust storms, rain, wind of course, and smoking. The thing just cleans up so well and doesn't require me to think about it. Just throw it on and know that you're safe from wind and light rain. Just wish it were more form-fitting is all.
My logic is this article is meant as an outer layer in windy conditions upward of 40 degrees. Under that, prepare to layer. I like using a Smartwool base 1/4 zip, Nano-Puff jacket, Windstopper shell if there's no precip.

I am a year round bike commuter and this jacket has been the best single most important part of my winter gear. I can ride into the lower 20's wearing only a base layer underneath, anything colder i throw on a shell on top. Material is very water resistant for light rain but also insulates when wet. Breathes well enough to stay comfortable on my daily 45 minute rides.
This was a Christmas gift from my wife a year ago and it still looks like new. The fit is great for my 5'7-180lb build and the drawcords help adjust fit nicely. I'm a little on the stocky side and I find that MHW jackets fit me perfectly. Fashionable enough that I wear this every day on and off the bike and get comments about it all the time.
