Comments about Thule Gateway 3 Bike Trunk Rack:
the boy bike slides on with great ease, the girls bikes however need to be wrangeled on and ride very high on the rack because of bar location, LUV THE EASE OF THIS RACK so I think I will get a more compatable bike.

Comments about Thule Gateway 3 Bike Trunk Rack:
Very stable, and solid construction. And very easy to install and store. Only concern is it may be hard to fit 3 mtn bikes on together. Maybe two adult mtn bikes and child's bike or a road bike. I got it for 2 adult mtn bikes and a future child's bike for the little guy, so I'm set :) No complaints.

Comments about Thule Gateway 3 Bike Trunk Rack:
I got this rack specifically since it claimed to be better at clearing spoilers and the mfg. website said it was compatible with the 2011 Nissan Altima. Well, in short it was not compatible with my 3.5SR model. When used with the Thule recommended Fit value of 8, the installed rack was being supported partially by my spoiler - not an acceptable situation.
So, I had to move to a value of 7 which allowed the spoiler to be cleared quite nicely. I then began installing the straps. The top of the trunk lid attached just fine. The bottom trunk lid seemed to attach okay, but I could not get a satisfactory attachment to the side of the trunk as the Altima trunk lid slopes down at an angle. As such, getting a firm attachment with the combo trunk bottom/side strap was tough. I got it attached in what seemed like an acceptable manner and then installed the bikes.
The three bikes (two adult Jamis Citizen bikes and a kid bike) fit great and the anti-sway feature worked well. I rechecked all of the straps and we set off to a local part for a test drive (about 10 miles).
During the drive, I noticed some swaying back and forth, but nothing too bad. However, when we got to the part, both of the lower trunk straps had come loose due to the side straps being so hard to be made stable on the sloping side of the trunk lid. I then retightened everything and seemed to find a sweet spot for the side straps such that nothing was moving. I then took off the bikes and we went for our ride. I checked the rack without the bikes and it still seemed quite snugly attached.
After the ride, we put the bikes back and I took a much more curvy ride home to test out the rack. I saw no motion other than the occasional vibration from the road and no side-to-side sway, so the straps definitely were installed better. BUT, when I got home, one of the lower trunk straps had again come off (the other was installed fine). So, I was having my doubts at this point, but figured I'd just try it again later and check with Thule about advice for installing securely with a sloping lid.
However, the icing on the cake was when I removed the rack. It had created a dent in my lower bumper cover. The rack is supposed to carry 105 lbs and I installed it where the model-specific notes said to with a 97 lb load. As such, I expect it to not damage my car in the process. Thankfully, I applied some pressure to the side of the bumper and that helped push some of the dent out. The next day, I could not see the dent.
So, in the end, there was no permanent damage to the car, but I think it is safe to say this bike rack is not compatible with the 2011 Altima 3.5SR nor with any other Altima in the same body style if you want to carry three bikes. I'll be looking into a hitch solution in the future to carry bikes on this car. For now, we'll stick with my wife's CR/V and her spare tire mounted solution (attached to the actual spare tire bracket, not the tire).
Big thanks to the REI return policy as this thing is going back. It was a nice rack and held the bikes very well relative to each other, but the rack to car interface was not good at all. I can see how it would be better for other models.
Service and delivery comments:
Delivery from REI was just fine and very prompt.

Comments about Thule Gateway 3 Bike Trunk Rack:
This model fits my 2008 Prius because the downward support tube is long enough, it rests BELOW the license plate. The six points where the straps hook on to the hatch back reach to solid metal edges.
I tried two other models from another major brand before I found this one. One was difficult to adjust, and tricky to install and did not clear the spoiler. The other was elegant in design and seemed sturdier than the Thule Gateway, but the bottom support rested on the middle of the license plate. Fit is everything.
