Comments about Thule Gateway 2 Bike Trunk Rack:
This was easy to install onto the car per the directions. I drove around with the rack on the back of my (Nissan versa sedan) car for about a week, without bikes on it, to get a feel for it. Everything seemed secure and fine for a few days at both highway and residential speeds, but after a few days started feeling very loose and unsecure. I took it off, and thought that when the bikes are on it that perhaps it would be sturdier. Instead I was frustrated even more--it is very hard to install 2 bikes on this bike rack, as the clamps are too close together. We were trying to fit two normal sized adult hybrids (a woman's and a man's)onto the back of the car and they would not fit well at all. I would not recommend this bike rack to anyone and we will be taking this rack back shortly, as it is sitting in the trunk of the car, unused at the moment. Very disappointed in this product.

Comments about Thule Gateway 2 Bike Trunk Rack:
This bike rack performs well at low speeds, but be careful if you use this rack with two bikes on a highway with a 75 mph speed limit.
I am no stranger to bike trunk racks and take extra precautions to secure my bike. I used this rack on a trip from Denver to Salt Lake City. I used the standard tie-downs, but also tied my outside bike to the rack in three separate places using the excess rope from the rack (admittedly, not the best rope for tying things down, but I assumed the design of the rack would do something to keep my bikes secure). After about 150 miles, I looked in my rearview mirror and noticed that the outside bike was sort of flopping in the wind, more every minute. On an interstate highway in Wyoming, I wanted to make it to the next exit to retie the bike. Too late. the rubber strap tie-down had broken and my bike was now hanging on just one bar of the rack. I'm convinced that my rope-tying is the only reason my bike didn't completely fly off.
I still have this rack around to use occasionally, but I know that if I'm going to travel at more than 45 mph, I'll need to tie it down with real rope. I'd recommend going with a more expensive, secure rack if you plan to use a bike rack on road trips.

Comments about Thule Gateway 2 Bike Trunk Rack:
Easy to install/take on and off after you get the fit right for your vehicle. I was concerned about weight and had the bike shop weigh it and it came in at an incredible 12.5 lbs! This was the lightest and most stable rack I have found after shopping through countless others.

Comments about Thule Gateway 2 Bike Trunk Rack:
I have a Mazda 3 Hatchback. There is no way to install this carrier without the top straps loading up on the spoiler. Over long distances, eventually this rack will destroy the spoiler over the back glass. It as also quite narrow; I question the footprint on the car for stability. I'll take my bike to the lake with this rack but I won't take it to Utah.

Comments about Thule Gateway 2 Bike Trunk Rack:
This is an update from a previous review now that I have spent more time with the product.
After spending about an hour trying to get a Specialized Sirrus and Kona Jake on the rack I have it figured out. Both bikes have racks on them and the Sirrus has a very sloped top tube. With my first use we simply could not get the bikes on.
However, with some free time and making some adjustments to the rack I have a way to get them on and it works fine.
The arms to hold the bikes can be adjusted independently and to get these two bike on, one arm needs to be raised a little higher than the other. With that done and a little patience figuring it out the rack works great.
I believe that is the nature of trunk racks, it can take a little work to get bikes on because of their shape and form. It may be easier to have the 3 bike rack for a little more room but the two works out fine.
The rack is solid and very easy to get on a VW Sportwagen. If you get a trunk rack, spend the time fitting the bikes on before you plan on traveling. It will let you fiddle without being rushed and you will be able to get them on.
I would give it 5 starts but I think the support arms could be a bit longer, which would make things a bit easier.
All in all a very good rack and it will serve us well.

Comments about Thule Gateway 2 Bike Trunk Rack:
The rack is very easy to install and solid when on the car, however it is very difficult to get two bikes on it.
The bikes both have racks on them, and even with the spacers as far apart as they can be the handlebar of each bike interferes with the rack of the other, you simply can't get them on. If you put both bikes in the same direction, we can can get them on with very much effort, but they stick farther out on one side of the car than the other.
With two simple road bikes it may be easier, but with racks fenders or anything else, it makes it very difficult to get the bikes on.
We will be returning this rack for either the same model designed for three bikes (so we can carry two) or a different model all together.

Comments about Thule Gateway 2 Bike Trunk Rack:
I bought the "2" last night and came right home, installed it, put my bikes on it. I wasn't very happy. I wrote a review last night stating that I wasn't happy with the way the bikes fit on the rack and would try adjusting things in the morning, before I gave up on it completely and gave it a 'one star' rating. Well, I did try it again this morning, adjusted the mounts on the bars, tried the bikes in a couple of different ways and I can now say, the Gateway 2 is OK. The bikes (Cannondale Quick 3) fit OK, with minimal contact, but it takes a little work to get them there. I suppose if I were going to start again, I would buy a Gateway 3 and use it for two bikes.

Comments about Thule Gateway 2 Bike Trunk Rack:
I was very pleased with the ease of installation and stability once on the car. However, I was disappointed to find it difficult to put two bikes on the rack w/o 1. having pedals rub against the car and 2. having the bikes tangled up with one another and rubbing against each other. I think I'll try again in the morning to adjust things around, but it is not looking good. May be returning. Can't say I'd recommend it at this point.
