Comments about Marmot Chelsea Down Coat - Women's:
This coat does not seem warm enough for how much it costs. It looks good, but the medium seemed large and airy (whereas the small was super small on me). It's supposed to be thin yet warm, but it just seems super thin, and would have required tons of layering which was what I wanted to avoid.
It almost seemed as if the coat was wicking heat away from my body.
It is super water proof though, and seemed wind proof, so maybe it would be better in a Seattle-type environment. In Chicago, it just didn't cut it.

Comments about Marmot Chelsea Down Coat - Women's:
I'm pathetically averse to cold and none of my patagonia jackets keep me warm in cold windy weather except for this Marmot one. Don't laugh but San Francisco can feel downright frigid sometimes - believe me.

Best winter coat yet - waterproof, down insulated, and dog proof. I think I've scared winter away this year.
Marmot thinks black is blue, but we're all a little color blind from time to time. I don't think we should hold this one against them.

Comments about Marmot Chelsea Down Coat - Women's:
I'm a comparison shopper, I compare specs and avidly read and weigh reviews. I'd rather have a few expensive, high quality products, than many cheap ones. I hate only having the word of buyers who have only 'just out of the box' experience with products. That said, I bought this coat November 2009 when it was available in cream/off white ("turtle dove"). I would buy it again, but only in a darker color.
I'm someone that brings a sweater to wear in air-conditioning all summer. I used to fantasize about wearing my down sleeping bag to walk around in. This is my third down coat- the last 2 were Gortex (non-breathable); 7-POCKET (FIVE, ZIPPERED); weatherPROOF; heavy, but perfect for winter commuting on foot and public transportation. I used my last coat for 10 winters. It was also purple and I was so sick of not only the hefty weight, but the 'goes with nothing' color.
This coat is BEAUTIFUL when clean and I've received many compliments on it. People don't even ask me IF it's warm or worth it.
It is unfortunately a very, cotton-like, canvas texture which easily attracts and accumulates dirt and lint, and it also pills. I hand washed the cuffs and spot cleaned dirty, salty snow splatters at least twice each winter -hopefully only required for light colors. I also used a battery-powered lint shaver to remove the pilling each winter. Another con is that it was reported (in 2009) to have a zippered in-side pocket. It's not zippered so you can't take the coat off and hold it draped over your arm without all the contents falling out. I put a large safety pin and later added a snap.
It is luckily washable and the waterproofness can be restored with a wash-in product. A bit high maintenance but, with some tweaking, still practical for everyday use from work/school to church/social in -0 degree F Chicago winters. I also have a black-and-white, ski coat with pit-zips, 6 pockets (5 zippered), and snow skirt for winter sports and above freezing temps. Between the 2, I expect to not NEED any more coats for 15 years or more.

I like the coat, but the sleeves are too short for my taste. I would prefer they were about 1.5 to 2 inches longer with thumb holes.

Comments about Marmot Chelsea Down Coat - Women's:
I was seeking a very stylish yet functional coat for cold Montana winters. This coat was a gift... and it more than fills the functional side of the equation. It is warm and comfortable and would be a decent around-town coat. However, the outer fabric immediately began collecting lint and fake fur that falls off the hood liner. Perhaps my starting goals of a stylish, shapely, and warm coat are unreasonable. This jacket has some feminine curves, but the waist is high and leaves plenty of jacket to pooch out around the stomach area when you sit down. Overall, it is a good looking jacket and not a bad compromise between function and appearance. Personally, I'd be willing to sacrifice a few degrees of warmth for a more flattering shape and less lint-collecting fabric.

Comments about Marmot Chelsea Down Coat - Women's:
Lightweight and comfortable down coat. I have 4 down coats, and this will probably become my favorite for general wear. It has a warm and well-designed hood; has a flattering silhouette; has no velcro to catch on scarves or gloves (yay!); is easy to move in; and is a good length for walking and driving. It is hard to find a down coat anymore with a smooth, non-quilted exterior; I think this type of exterior makes the coats more wind-resistant. I am 5'4" and wear a size 14. I ordered XL because I wanted to be able to wear a heavy sweater or a suit jacket under the coat, and I can. The length comes to just below my knees. This is a good coat for the pear-shaped figure, as it is A-line, but would not work well for an apple-shaped figure as the waist and chest areas are not overly generous. I would have preferred flap pockets on outside, to hold bulky gloves, keys, dog treats, etc., but the zippered hand-warmer pockets are okay. It's plenty warm with the usual winter layers (wool) underneath. I would not say it's expedition weight but is fine for wearing to work, dog walking, and general running around in cold weather. It is very comfortable, the construction seems to be very high quality, and I am happy I bought it.
