Comments about Gregory Baltoro 70 Pack - 2010 Closeout:
Great pack bought at a great price. The pack is not as light as many others in its class, but it more then makes up for it in comfort!

Comments about Gregory Baltoro 70 Pack - 2010 Closeout:
I used this pack on a thru hike of the John Muir Trail. Very adjustable and comfortable. The suspension system is top-notch, allowing for freedom of movement while climbing and descending rugged terrain. My con is that the pack is a tad on the heavy side but I knew that when I purchased. I elected for comfort and an extra couple of pounds over a lightweight pack that wouldn't be comfortable. The Baltoro is rugged and didn't have to worry about taking extreme care of with it during the hike. Highly recommend.

Comments about Gregory Baltoro 70 Pack - 2010 Closeout:
I typically use this pack on 5-10 mile per day trips in the sierras with a total weight around 40 - 45 pounds with elevation gains around 1000-3000 ft. I am very happy with this pack. I have tried a few different other packs from REI and found this to be the most substantially padded on the shoulders and hips. Gregory probably has the best suspension system and the price is always reasonable, maybe even a bargain when considering the quality. My only gripe with this bag is that there is no way to lessen the weight if you plan on doing fast and light trips. If you can only afford one backpack, this one should be a good one to consider.

Comments about Gregory Baltoro 70 Pack - 2010 Closeout:
GREGORY Baltoro 70 is a great pack but a little heavy. It seems like it could take some abuse which I think is very valuable. The two big downers are the weight at 5.9lbs and the right mess pouch that is tilted to the front doesn't hold water bottles that well. Trying to take the water bottle in and out is a pain and pouch doesn't tighten very well. The padding on the pack is great and very comfortable for a load of about 28lbs is what I had in it. Hip belt is good but the pockets on it are very small. If you don't mind the weight of the pack it's a great piece of gear to have.

Comments about Gregory Baltoro 70 Pack - 2010 Closeout:
This was my first backpack that I have ever bought as I am green to the sport. It was recommended to me because I am 6'2" 285lbs and had prior experience canoe camping in the Boundary Waters. In the canoe camping style it is possible to bring a relatively large amount of gear without much regard for size or weight. If you need another pack just get one. In the worst case you may need to double portage but in most cases it is less than a mile. I soon found out that backpacking is much different. The traditional camping gear that was excellent while canoe camping makes backpacking miserable because of the weight. That being said the Baltoro 70 held it all (3-Man Tent, sleeping bag/air mattress, tarp/rope, extra clothes, rain gear, sandals, shovel, hatchet, knife, water filter, toiletries, bear canister, food and water) and aside from the weight the pack performed well. I have since removed some gear that was previously carried and substituted some out for lighter weight gear. The pack does well for 3-5 day trips but is a bit too much for over the weekend trips. However, the the budget allows for only one pack, then this is the one you should get. It appears that Gregory has substituted the Baltoro 70 for a 75L and 65L version. I would recommend this pack at sale price rather than purchasing the new versions. I have also "test drove" the ventilated packs Z65 and Z55 in the store but they fit differently on my frame and the shoulder supports are not as comfortable. With a few more miles under my belt the only complaint would be the pack is bit heavy and large for the 2-3 day trips that are frequently taken, but again, I only have one pack![...]Great buy for me and I am sure it will be the same for you.

Comments about Gregory Baltoro 70 Pack - 2010 Closeout:
On long trips your pack is going to weigh in at 40 - 60 pounds and this gregory pack carries that weight very effectively. This is my third pack and it will be my last. Extremely durable and well built. The attention to detail is excellent. The only area where this pack falls short is that it is a little too heavy to use on ultralight weekend trips. The pack itself weighs about 7-8 lbs. so its not exactly light. However, if you a typical backpacker that carries a mess kit, stove, sleeping pad, tent, bear canister, shovel, water - you kind of need the extra space and comfort that a deluxe pack offers. I highly recommend you give this pack a try.
