Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife:
This knife, while it is quite interesting and innovative, is fatally flawed.
The knife itself is pretty similar to the Gerber LMF or many of gerber's other military or tactical style knives. The grip is comfortable and it has a versatile grind.
The sheath comes with many useful features. The firesteel is a great idea (which has been implemented a lot in custom knife sheaths) but the sharpener is only ok at best. The information packet is a nice touch.
The biggest flaw to this knife is that 1/2 of the blade is serrated. Serrations mostly exist in such a ridiculous amount of knives because of ignorant consumer demand. Serrations are pretty close to useless in the woods.
They are nice for urban rescue work, where you may have to shove your knife through extreme tough material. The combination of cutting and sawing helps to rip through materials like thin walls, thin metal, or hard plastics. Also, if you damage your edge on concrete or metal, the serrations will still cut aggressively.
But in the woods, they just get in the way of everything you try and do. You will constantly be dodging the serrations and using the tip of the knife (which will be farther from your hand and have less control)to avoid ripping the animal you are skinning or the tool that you are carving. It may be useful in some situations, but not enough to ever warrant carrying. It comes with a sharpener, if you know how to use it, then you will understand why a plain edge is so much better.
Another issue of this knife is just how breakable it is. All of the internet, people are reporting cracked guards, broken handles, and disconnected pommels. The one that I used already had cracks in the guard from previous use. It's just cheaply made.
If Gerber were to offer a version without the serrations (they are stupid for not doing this in the first place) and make a more durable handle, then this knife would be worth carrying.

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife:
bear grills is insulting us putting his name on this knife. it is a horrible weak poorly crafted piece of garbage. a cheap beater knife for a kid to take car camping to feel like a big man about. not good for anything else but "Yea I got the cool TV knife" its about as respectable as buying the ultimate super survival knife out of the back of MAD magazine. JUNK

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife:
I Purchased this kinfe because I own the Gerber LMF2 and I love that blade. The LMF 2 is a military survival knife and although Im not a fan of serations on a camping/survival knife, the LMF is designed to cut your way out of a downed aircraft and it does I've seen it.
The blade is shorter and narrower than the LMF. I am getting ready to use it here pretty soon and going to use it to batton wood and tent spike hammering, etc. We'll see if its as good as the LMF.
The fire starter throws a good spark and attaches well to the sheath. I took the emergency whistle off the handle and attached it to the starter. Its too small for a lynard. The blade holds a good edge and the sharpener works kinda well (screw holes in the way). The blade has a nitch cut out on the back of the knife with a little fire icon to show you where to strike the fire starter. Thats handy.
I had to design a calf/ankle strap to wear it low. I like my knives on my calf, and having to construct a strap to attach my ankle strap to was annoying. The serations are a bad idea with any survival knife but I can choke up on the blade back with my thumb if I need to fashion anything like a stake or something. Gerber fixed the pommel breaking problem according to multiple online forums. Its 1st run had that problem, but best of all..Gerber will fix this knife for free, or replace it. They are a good knife company that way.

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife:
Since I bought this knife a few months back, I no longer use anything else on my backpacking trips. The blade stays sharp (sharpened it once after my first trip, then none since), and the firestarter worked very well for me after a few swipes - if anything, there are too many sparks. I've used it to cut tree roots and dig holes, then, after a rinse in the river, pieces of fruit for dinner. Just for fun, I tied a tree limb to the end of the handle (where two holes are placed specifically for this purpose) and made a spear, which flew reasonably well. After months of abuse, it still looks fairly new, though some of the blade's coating is starting to rub off in places. The only thing I haven't used extensively is the pommel - I know some people have reported problems with this, but I used it once to pound a nail and didn't encounter any issues.

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife:
Over all I would give this knife a good review. The blade is a good thickness and keeps a decent edge. The serrations are unfortunate and as it seems after a bit of abuse they will start to chip and dull. The grip of the knife is wonderful, it offers a lot of control and comfort. The fire starter works well and throws a nice spark. I am worried about the amount of plastic on the base that has been worn down in the attempts to make a fire. The sheath is great. Can be worn on a belt in a drop leg fashion or scout style, however, a thick belt of cloth will be hard to get through the loops. The sharpener on the back of the plastic is a nice stone. A few swipes to clean up the edge a little was very handy. I know some of the early models had a problem with the pommel coming off but I did not have this problem. It dealt well with tent pegs and even sinking nails on a fence......had to give it a go. All in all a good knife, I had Gerber LMF II that I loved and this reminds of it fondly.
Good knife for a novice camper through an intermediate

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife:
This product is a fake just like the Bear Grylls name it carries. Gerber has chosen to build this knife as a gimmic. Very poor quality, not even as good as some of Gerber's $15 knives. Save your money and get a real survival knife; Gerber LMF, esee, TOPS, Ka-Bar Becker, Cold steel, or even a SOG. Spend an extra $20-60 and get a knife worth the money.
The one good thing is the all inclusive sheath.

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife:
Inelegant, breakable, ineffective: I bought this and another BG knife and they both had poor blades. The design is next to useless for camping because of the too deep serrations and the blade wears quickly compared to other Gerber knives. Gerber is has lost its edge with the BG line.

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife:
I bought this knife last week and have to say it's a really nice well built piece, took it across the street to an empty field and used the fire starting rod in the sheath to quickly get a small fire going. So if your looking for a great knife this is a good choice. It also doesn't hurt to see Bear Grylls actually use this knife on his show.

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife:
First off I love Bear Grylls. We bought two of these for camping, my wife broke the fire flint with in 1-2 mins of trying to start our camp fire.
THe craftsmanship on this knife is terrible. Lets hope we never have to depend on this knife in a real emergency.

Comments about Gerber Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife:
Am very disappointed that REI carries this piece of garbage.. Bear Grylls should know what a good survival knife is after all his in the field experience and shake his head at this toy knife.. A friend bought one and asked me to put it through the paces.. At the end of two days in the field I brought it back to him in pieces.. A simple Marine Corps Karbar would blow this piece of junk out of the water and is easy on the wallet.. I carry a Kabar in my car for the just in case scenerio for over twenty years now and it is unbeatable.. Please don't waste your money or risk you life on this hyped up piece of junk..
