Comments about REI Salix Jacket - Men's:
This has been simply my all around jacket during cold fall weather/winter. When it's 40, throw it on top of a t-shirt and run errands without a problem. When it's 0, throw a fleece, and then this jacket, and you're set. I'm pretty picky when it comes to jackets and this has been one of my favorites. I never thought a jacket like this would keep me super warm in the hard cold Chicago winters, yet so breathable. The zippers along withe armpits are great for added breathability when it's not too cold. Another perk, it's waterproof. I've had to run back and forth in the nasty pouring rain and I was barely wet. The hood has a cord along the back to tighten around your head to keep you snug, and the little bill pushes the water far enough from your face to keep walking. It's also not bulky at all. Fits me nice and snug - Sm - i'm 5'9, 150lbs - when this jacket decides to poop out on me, which will be a long while, I really hope they don't discontinue it, cause I'll buy this again in a heartbeat!

Comments about REI Salix Jacket - Men's:
This is my new everyday winter coat, the weight and flexibility are great! I love the fit, it moves very naturally and the ventilation zippers help in those not-sold cold or very active parts of the day. Great fit and great price!

I bought this Jacket when I moved to live here to Rockville on the Winter, and I´ve used it almost everyday, cause it´s a comfortable, warm, wind and waterproof jacket that protects you from any kind of bad weather

Comments about REI Salix Jacket - Men's:
This is a very nice lightweight, waterproof, breathable jacket. It's perfect for cool to cold weather and for both wet or dry conditions. In extremely cold weather you will want to wear a sweater or other layers under the Salix jacket. I'm slight of build and sometimes have trouble finding outerwear that isn't too large through the body. The Salix is trim but not too tight and the sleeve length seems true to size. The insulated hood is great for rainy weather, and cut so that it stays up easily and does not block your vision to the sides. I think the blue version is nicely understated and classy. It's the kind of jacket you can wear on a hike or in town. My only feature request would be for more pockets, and perhaps for elastic at the liner cuffs inside the shell (although the velcro works fine too.) No regrets!

Comments about REI Salix Jacket - Men's:
This is a great jacket. Waterproof and light, but remarkably warm, given the amount of insulation. This is nearly my ideal jacket. I just wish it had a two-way main zipper and I do not particularly like raglan sleeves. But this is a great jacket for the price.

Comments about REI Salix Jacket - Men's:
I wanted a multi purpose, water proof, warm jacket that was suitable for a variety of activities.
The Salix is an excellent selection. In winter applications you can leave the shell behind and wear lighter insulating layers to suit the temperature. I've worn this ice fishing in sub zero conditions with heavier insulating layers and ski touring with nothing but a merino base layer. Ive also worn this with street clothes in cold rainy weather and can report staying dry and comfortable. Hats off to your store rep in Anchorage for recommending the Salix to me.

I am very happy with this jacket. It is very warm and windproof. It feels like I'm wearing a sleeping bag, but not bulky or cumbersome. This jacket is certainly worth the $. It is the best jacket I've ever purchased!

Comments about REI Salix Jacket - Men's:
This jacket fills a multitude of uses in various situations and is the jack-of-all-trade in the winter weather department.
It has become my first choice on many of the cool, damp days we get here in the Pac NW.
I must admit I bought at the recent sale and it has proven to be the bargain of the year.
My only negative would be that it's too warm for hiking in other than very cold weather.

Comments about REI Salix Jacket - Men's:
This jacket is perfect for me. I am 5'-8" and 160lbs, I got a sz Med. I had bought it initially because I was tired of doing so much laundry from layering so much. This jacket had everything I wanted: warmth, waterproof, windproof, good hood, light. I ended up getting more than I paid for! It has since become my motorcycle/scooter jacket, daily jacket, rain jacket, you get the picture. It really is the best jacket I have ever owned.
If I HAD TO knock it for anything it would be that it doesn't fit in my backpack. Even then, the underpit zips work so well I don't mind just keeping it on.

Comments about REI Salix Jacket - Men's:
I bought this coat when I moved to Michigan to serve as my winter coat. I love this coat, but there is still room for improvement.
The Good:
The hood is the best kept secret of this jacket. The hood is insulated and very adjustable so that it will fit snuggly on your head.
The coat has 5 pockets which is more than enough for me. There are 3 on outside and two inside the coat as well for extra storage.
The jacket has an incredibly durable water repellent finish. I have not followed the guidelines for caring for a DWR finish but the coat is still waterproof. Days that I've been running late for whatever reason; I've used the sleeve of my coat to brush off snow from my car while my girlfriend uses the ice scrapper. The coat is still just as waterproof as the day I bought it.
The pit zips makes this coat very versatile in the spring.
The Bad:
This coat does run a little bit on the big side especially in the chest and sleeves. REI has changed the cut of the coat from 2010 to 2011, to a trimmer cut, but it's still a little big on me. In all fairness I'm a pretty small dude at 5 foot 7 inches (140lbs).
The jacket is actually pretty heavy when compared to most other insulated coats. This is not really con of the jacket because the shell of this coat more than makes up for the added weight.
I would also probably not take this coat backpacking just because it is so bulky and does not compress very well.
Some key points to the potential buyer:
The actual amount of insulation in this coat is pretty small. If you are not going be active while wearing this coat you will probably be really cold. I use this coat to walk to school and I'm very happy and warm in a t-shirt and pullover under this coat. Between the windproof shell and the insulation of this coat it is surprisingly warm if you're active. I've used this coat in a couple of days where the temperatures were negative and been nice and toasty.
For the price this coat can't be beat.
