Comments about ACR Electronics ResQLink 406 GPS Personal Locator Beacon:
This little PLB is really small and light. It is waterproof and rugged. The antenna is easy to deploy and turn on the PLB. Using the 406Link.com service allows you to send an OK message to friends and family. As a SPOT owner, I feel that this PLB is more reliable and faster to acquire and send a message. Best of all I no longer have to deal with SPOT's horrible customer service and high prices.
I am a happy owner and I hope I never have to use it.

Comments about ACR Electronics ResQLink 406 GPS Personal Locator Beacon:
This product may or may not work, but there are so many issues with their documentation, website, etc that it is hard to have real confidence in the product. If the company can't even get simple website issues resolved, why should we assume that they can produce a super-reliable lifesaving devise? For example:
1- Page 12 of their pdf user manual (http://www.acrelectronics.com/products/catalog/personal-locator-beacons/resqlink-406-gps/#tab-downloads) states that the device is capable of 60 basic self-tests over its 5-year life. The chart on the first page of their website www.406link.com/406Link.html clearly states 220 basic self tests. How can this company publish two different numbers for this same spec?
2- The box I received the product in as well as page 14 in the same pdf users manual states that there is a "2-Day Free Trial" of the email/text confirmation utility. There is no free trial option anywhere on their website.
3- Their specification for GPS accuracy is 100 meters. I did a GPS self-test on my home patio and the device placed me approximately 182 meters from where I was standing! The GPS in almost any current cell phone can place you within feet of your location- why is this device failing to meet its own published standard?
4- The documentation and explanations of use for this product are horrible. For example, it took me a lot of research to understand what they mean by a "through test" and when it applies. EVERY self test, whether "basic" or GPS, is a "through" test. This means that your location and test data are sent by the SARSAT satellite back to earth. However, you can only read and confirm that test by paying an additional $40-$60 for that service at their 406link website. This service should be part of the product at no extra charge. This phony fee structure reminds me of what the airlines have done.
5- The most important questions- first, does it really work, and second, do the authorities respond consistently, and in what parts of the world? Evidence on this is extremely sketchy, with many of the "survivor stories" posted on their website relating to other devices and boating or aviation. I can't find a single instance of hikers/backpackers in remote backcountry locations being rescued with this device. So the most important question is still an open question- but all of the unprofessionalism in their websites, explanations, and the fact that my unit did not meet its 100 meter spec certainly do nothing to build my confidence."
Follow-up: I first wrote this review on 2-14-2012 but REI chose not to post it. (Hmmm...). SO I am trying again.
ALSO- I sent these same comments by email to the head of their tech support department and got not response whatsoever. SO more evidence of lousy customer service.
LAST: I would love to see some comments from a hiker who used this device (successfully or unsuccessfully) for rescue from a remote hiking area. Please post feedback if you have had such experience!!

Comments about ACR Electronics ResQLink 406 GPS Personal Locator Beacon:
I was extremely impressed that the manufacture date of the PLB (and initiation date for the five-year battery) was in September 2011 and I received it in October 2011. It's small, it's light, and you could deploy it with one hand if you had to. Very nice.
A more complete printed manual would have been better, as the included instruction sheet is incomplete. A much more detailed manual is available at the ACR website though, so still 5 stars.
I hope I never have to use it, but I'm confident it will do the job if necessary.

Comments about ACR Electronics ResQLink 406 GPS Personal Locator Beacon:
I got thinking about some of the activities that I do & being over the age of 50. With much urging from my wife. I decided to get a personal locator. I figure any product that the US Coast Guard is buying, must be pretty good. I only gave it 4 stars, because I have not used it yet & hope not too. But if the need araises the rating will change. I get quite far away from my truck while hunting & back country exploring. Like it's size & it is made in America. Which is always a plus.

Comments about ACR Electronics ResQLink 406 GPS Personal Locator Beacon:
My ResQLink failed catastrophically during the first self-test. The red LED flashed continuously, and it was still flashing when I returned it to REI two hours later (it is supposed to flash for a maximum of 120 seconds during a "GNSS Self Test").
I exchanged the ResQLink for a ACR Electronics SAR Link View which is clearly a much better PLB. The ResQLiink was obviously rushed into production before getting all the bugs out.
I subscribed to the 406Link website at the more expensive membership level. Unfortunately "406Link" is a confusing buggy mess. Many of the features do no work. For example I was not able to change my PLB Unique Identifier Number (UIN) even though there is a page designed specifically to do that. I had to call Customer Support and have them do it. In my opinion there is no point in entering your emergency contacts or trip plans in the 406Link website since there is no way to forward this information to Search and Rescue (SAR) teams if you activate your PLB in an emergency.
The documentation provided with the "ResQLink" is not complete. You have to go to the manufacturer's website to get the full user manual. Please note that the "User Manual" link on the 406Link website shows a incomplete version of the manual -- the only way to get the full manual is to carefully follow the instructions in the pamphlet.

Comments about ACR Electronics ResQLink 406 GPS Personal Locator Beacon:
I would like to clear things up on how to operate. There are 2 buttons. One is for emergency activation only. The other is for testing. There are 2 test that can be done. Push button for 1 Second does self test only. This test is performed 60 times or once a month. The other test, Push button for 5 Seconds, it performs self test with GPS test too. It should also be understood, any testing or emergency use must be done with open sky. No tree's. I've tested in the forest and it will fail. Something else everyone should understand. You should keep track of the dates of your testing. I keep an enlarge copy of how to activate and the lighting sequence with my PLB in a ZipLoc.

Comments about ACR Electronics ResQLink 406 GPS Personal Locator Beacon:
ACR has a Website called 406Link, used for testing and sending you an email notification when a test is sucessful. I did a test, did not recieve an email about my sucessful test. I sent a message to them two times and they did not respond, both times.

All of the reviews & recommendations led me to buy this. I hunt in places where the closest cell signal is 3 hours away. This gives me peace of mind in case the worst happens to me or my friends.
