Comments about Surftech Robert August What I Paddle Stand Up Paddleboard - 11' 6":

If you're looking for a SUP that's a genuine all rounder, definitely consider the Robert August What I Paddle.
I'm a 195 pound intermediate long boarder that's been surfing for about 18 months. I live on the English South Coast where we just don't get regular surf so I started looking for SUP a couple of months ago.
I have a wide range of boards available on my doorstep from Naish, Starboard and Surftech so plenty of choice.
I first considered a race board on the theory that I was into coast running and if a day threw a couple of feet up then I could jump on the long board. However, I really wanted something that would catch a little surf and I wasn't impressed with how the race boards dealt with that obviously as its not what they are designed for.
I'm not an expert long boarder but I do cross step and am close to hanging five so I thought I would handle a SUP with a little less volume. The 11'6 Robert August, Pearson Laird 12, Naish Nalu and Starboard Blend initially seemed oversize even at my weight, but when I tried a couple of more surf driven boards I was really surprised at the drop in stability.
I ruled out Fanatic because I'd seen the way their demo long board had dinged up in my local store. Anything Surftech scores big on durability and as SUP's get a bit of punishment I wanted durability.
The Takayama and Gerry Lopez are lovely looking boards but much more tippy. In the hands of the right customer these boards are great but I was worried about how much work they would make of being a way off the coast in a decent swell or chop.
So back to the all rounder's; I kept wanting to go for less volume because of my long boarding but I bit the bullet on the Robert August out of trust. I use a 9'6 What I Ride and it transformed my progression when I bought it.
That was 4 weeks ago and I have been on it every other day, what a board. I am really glad of the length and volume when I'm doing 4-mile coast runs and the Robert August glides really well with and into the wind. I've had quite a few comments from other Suppers on the speed as well.
We only get 2 and 3 feet of surf and its not that solid but the Robert August flies in these conditions. I'm walking the board comfortable and it turns incredibly well.
I'm sure something like a Takayama and a Gerry Lopez would come into their own in heavier surf but if you really want the best of both worlds the Robert August is a great choice.
If I don't get comments about waffling on I'll come back and let you know what its like in the heavier stuff as I've got a trip planned to the North Devon coast.
Lastly, well done to REI for taking the trouble to write their own description of the board rather than just copying Suftech's brochure text – nice touch and if I was in the States I'd buy from you.

Comments about Surftech Robert August What I Paddle Stand Up Paddleboard - 11' 6":

I live in Seattle and don't have any aspirations to take this board to the coast for surfing. I bought it to paddle the water around here - big lakes and Puget Sound. For me this board is the perfect combination of glide and stability. It's not as fast as a displacement board when the water is flat - but it rarely is here. Yet with it's mild rocker it glides way better than a board designed for the surf. For the water around here - mostly choppy, boat wakes and usual wind - this board really handles the conditions well. I'm really happy with it and recommend it to anyone looking for a high-quality, all around board.
