  • Sturdy high-tensile steel frame is almost as tough as they are and is designed to stand up to demanding use
  • Rear coaster brake is easy and intuitive to use; simply backpedaling engages the brake
  • Removable training wheels and built-in full-length chainguard help kids learn to ride without fear of tipping over or catching pants in the chain
  • BMX-style handlebar is comfortable and fun; handlebar bag and bell complete the package
  • Convenient handle is integrated into the back of the saddle for easy carrying or control
  • Specs on the Novara Firefly 12 in. kids' bike are subject to change

After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. Contact your nearest REI bike shop for details and an appointment for this important service.

Comments about Novara Firefly 12'' Kids' Bike - 2013:

Obviously I didn't buy this bike for myself, its for my 3 year old daughter. We originally got the Novara Zipper (the one without pedals) but she hated it. This bike is the same size as the Zipper. She loves it. Her first time on, she rode it like she has been riding a bike for years. Very stable and durable. She has yet to flip it over even when making a sudden turn. Small enough that it fits in a normal-size car trunk, even with the training wheels on. Brakes quickly and smoothly. Light enough so that when she gets tired of riding it, I can put it on my shoulder and carry it back to the car or home.

Only potential downside is she may outgrow it quickly because its a 12", but that depends more on her than the bike. She was 40" tall when we got it. Right now, it looks like its going to be perfect for at least the next year. I'd recommend this bike to anyone whose kids have mastered the trike. Skip the Zipper and just go to this.

Comments about Novara Firefly 12'' Kids' Bike - 2013:

It's a nice bike, but heavy for what it is. I've got full-size road bikes that weigh less. Also, none of the bolts are hex, so you can't use standard bike tools to work on this bike, which is a shame, and is needless. However, having said that, it's a bike that's solid, comfortable and well put-together.

Comments about Novara Firefly 12'' Kids' Bike - 2013:

I'm reviewing an older version, but as far as I can tell it's the basically the same geometry. The lowest the seat can go leaves the seat 19" above the ground. The seat tube extension on the frame and long seatpost make it impossible to go lower. This in conjunction with the somewhat high bottom bracket makes it pretty tall. My almost 3 year old has the seat 16" above the ground on her balance bike (which is the maximum). She's slightly below average for height. I can't see waiting for her to grow a few inches before riding the bike, nor do I want to put her on training wheels with her feet nowhere near touching the ground. If the seattube extension on the frame were not so long, and the seatpost was shorter she could probably fit it. Until then, it looks like the specialized 12" and maybe the trek can go that low. Other than that, it looks well built. With regular maintenance it should will be outgrown long before it wears out.

Comments about Novara Firefly 12'' Kids' Bike - 2013:

We bought this for our 4 year old who is now 5. She had a metal kick bike since 3 and transitioned nicely to this bike at 4 1/2 years old. She is a good rider so we are looking for a larger wheel base so she can keep up. We are very happy with this bike and will be passing it on to her sister. I would confidently pass this on to several kids after her. I wish it would have lasted longer, but I think our issue is that our daughter advanced so quickly which may not be a fault of the bikes.

I wonder if the pedals could be removed to be made into a kick bike. Either way I highly recommend starting with a kick bike. It makes the transition, easier, safer, and less intimidating for the child. She had ZERO falls when first riding this bike because of it.

Comments about Novara Firefly 12'' Kids' Bike - 2013:

I purchased this for my daughter's 3 year old birthday last year. She loves riding it. I was torn on whether to spend the extra money on this bike vs a bike from a big box store. I think the extra money spent was well worth it. The quality is great and she has been able to grow into this bike compared to her friends that have bikes from big box stores. As a note, she takes her bike to school for bike day and is the fastest out of the group of 20- I would like to think it's because of her mad biking skills, but I'm pretty sure it's because her bike is built a bit better than the others. I also like that REI assembles the bike and offers a 1 year tune-up.

The only con is that one of the handlebar streamers feel off after a few months. I took the other one off and she doesn't seem to miss it.
