by fromA contrarian opinion This was one of several Backpackers Pantry meals I took on a three day trip into the eastern Sierras. Having not done true backpacking for a long time (only car camping) I blindly took whatever meals REI had on show and sounded tasty. Unfortunately all but one BP meal completely failed to satisfy. Problems I had with this product - the rehydration times are stated to double every 5000 feet. We were camping at 10,000 feet. From a base of 13 minutes that theoretically meant 52 minutes before I could eat my meal. Having seen all my companions tuck into their meals after just 10 to 15 minutes, and tasted some of them I decided to try mine at 20 minutes. Blah! The pasta was still crunchy and the sauce still soup. At 40 minutes the pasta was mostly edible but the sauce still soupy. At 45 minutes I gave up and just at it since it not longer seemed to be improving and the meal was getting cold. At that point I was entirely unsatisfied with the meal, it was just meh and I had basically a uninteresting soup to drink. My four camp mates all tried it and none wanted a second bite. I was hungry so had to finish it or deal with disposing it in a bear friendly way. You will probably conclude I prepared this wrong or should have waited another 7 minutes. I definitely had the right amount of water - we carefully measured the amounts for all our meals and mine was no different. At 45 minutes like I said the meal was getting cold and not improving. I'm tempted to buy it again and prepare in ideal conditions at sea-level but really why bother? All several of my camp mates had meals that had no such x2 rehydration time gotchas and included pasta and were tasty and completely ready to eat in 10 to 15 minutes. Therefore I strongly caution anyone considering Backpackers Pantry meals - carefully read the instructions: they almost all seem to have these rehydration time issues, and often have complicated multi-step preparations that you won't know about until you are hungry and frustrated that you don't have a pan to cook things in because that is what is required. And since the flavor of the two BP meals I had at the end was meh I will not even bother with them in the future regardless of altitude.

by fromMy First Meal This was my first backpacking meal and I was a little nervous. It didn't taste bad at all and I was in fact surprised. The beef bits I thought weren't quite re hydrated all the way and they were a little chewy. I let my boyfriend eat this one. Which brings me to my next complaint. The proportion sizes are really enough for two women to share comfortably. But as for my hungry boyfriend, he could eat a whole one to himself. Which makes sharing the load and buying them hard. All in all a pretty good product. The noodle kinds are usually better than the rice dishes I hear.

by fromSimply Excellent Simply wonderful dinner. I have had lots of meals in my day, from dehydrated to cooking my own, this is simple, filling and tastes great. and no beans for those unwanted bathroom trips on your overnight. Like to use a little less water than recommended to keep it from being too soupy, but that's just me.

by fromExcellent I don't usually do these meals, but decided to be really lazy/water efficient (nothing to wash post) at Burning Man with my son. Flavor is great, except now my son wants us to have them at home as well.
