Comments about Black Diamond Distance Z-Pole Trekking Poles - Pair:
I think someone is targeting snowboarders/splitboarders....
I stumbled on these in my local REI store. They are amazing poles because of their COMPACTABLE size (they are also light..for trekking, i shave 1/2 lb vs my other poles: 12oz!! Not that I am a super-minimalist, but every bit counts).
I live in Big Sky, MT. One of the best parts of Lone Peak, is the A-Z Chutes. There are 2 dozen chutes/couloirs. Amazing terrain! BUT they require hiking. The hike is NASTY!! Probably the single sketchiest hiking i have ever done. Bootpack only, on a ridge that knifes out. At some points it's only one boot wide! You have 60 degree scree on your left (nothing to hang on to and 60degree down to the right (Moonlight Basin Resort). Your foot wants to slip constantly and if you fell (people have) you would tumble 1500ft at least, down the Headwaters of Moonlight. First time up, I didn't even have a backpack! I borrowed one pole from a skier i was with. I bought Yaktrax for my boots and BD Distance Z-poles.
My standard trekking poles (Leki Malalus)are awesome, but were just too protruding out of my day pack to ride around the resort with (22" compacted). Also, pretty dangerous if you wipe out anywhere on the mountain.
I got the BD Distance 120cm (be sure to pick your correct height, or get the proper range with the FlickLock version). Need less to say, my hikes were a lot more confident now that I have these poles.
These are also great for backpacking for one reason, again compact SIZE! Have you ever tried to slip a rain cover over a pack with 2foot poles attached to side of your pack?
Comes with a cool carrying case, rubber and carbide tips. Nice extra feature for the money.

Comments about Black Diamond Distance Z-Pole Trekking Poles - Pair:
I was looking so shave ounces for my trip into Havasupai, these did the trick. The Z-Poles where like air in my hands. I was worried about durability, because they are so light, the held up just great. Because of the uber light weight, I saved energy hiking in and out of the canyon. They fold down a packable size, and unfolding them is a snap. My hands are blister free too.

I picked up these after talking to the sales person at the store. I love these poles. They pack up to a little over a foot long, and are super light. So far they have held up very well for me. I have only put about 5 miles of hiking on them. But being a 300lb guy, I was nervous about them at first. I have not had any problems under full load. I would recommend these to any one that needs a good set of poles to put in the pack for the just in case situation, or to use on a regular basis.

Comments about Black Diamond Distance Z-Pole Trekking Poles - Pair:
I was so pleased to find poles that broke apart for packing for a cross-country flight for a hiking trip. However, I quickly found out that the poles came apart whenever the pole tip was grabbed by a muddy surface or if they caught under a rock. I could not rely on them for balance crossing a stream as I never knew when they would disengage. I feel I must give them a negative review.

Comments about Black Diamond Distance Z-Pole Trekking Poles - Pair:
I purchased these poles to replace an old pair of telescoping style poles I've had for 10 years. I got them specifically because they can be broken down into a small package, they're light, and come with rubber tips. I needed these features for a trip to Peru I'm taking this summer to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. I'm 5'8" and the 120cm length works perfectly. These do not have shock absorption and don't adjust but I never adjusted my old poles anyway and don't miss the shock absorption. They come with metal tips which I haven't tried yet, but the rubber worked great on all surfaces on a 9-mile loop hike in the Appalachian Mts last weekend. Not only did the tips work great, but showed almost no wear after the hike and didn't pick up any leaves along the way. On first impression they seem very durable. I tripped over a down-tree crossing and fell on the side of one of the poles as the tip was planted. It bent quite a bit, but snapped back into shape and was straight as an arrow after the impact. They're also very easy to open and close. I love these poles, and can really only think of two potential negatives. I got a small blister on the top of my right hand at the base of my thumb from the strap. This is not that big of a deal as it's happened before for me with other poles. When it happens I just move the strap under my thumb to stop the blister. Carrying the pole this way is just as comfortable for me anyway. The second potential negative, or maybe it's a positive, is at the store I was curious to see how to replace the rubber tip with the metal tip. After some struggle trying to get the rubber one off, I [...] couldn't get the tip off [...] Maybe it's a good thing it's so tight because it shouldn't come off in use, but it is difficult. I'm sure I can find some instructions online, but I'm not going to try until after my trip since I'll need the rubber on there anyway. That's all...best poles I've ever used.

Comments about Black Diamond Distance Z-Pole Trekking Poles - Pair:
I brought a pair of Distance Z poles from REI Las Vegas in December 2011 and used it for the second time in March 2012. Initially, I could rapidly collapse the poles and pack them away in my back pack. Recently, I need to apply a lot of strength to pull the lower and middle shafts apart. Based on Black Diamond's advice, I have applied oil into the interior wall of the middle section to lubricate the plastic connector but to no avail. Black Diamond has agreed to refer the matter to its technical department and revert to me soon.

Comments about Black Diamond Distance Z-Pole Trekking Poles - Pair:
After using these on several back country trips I have to say that I really can't imagine a better design for a collapsible hiking pole. But, are they worth [$] when heavier, telescoping poles are so much cheaper? Well, the obvious advantage of lightweight poles is in minimizing fatigue from repeated lifting, swinging and planting. Each added ounce adds up to one pound of dynamic weight over the course of 16 paces. And telescoping poles can be more than twice the weight of these. What about super-light one-piece poles? Yes, a one-piece pole can be even lighter, and cheaper, but stowibility then becomes an issue (let's face it, there may be times during a trek when one doesn't want to be encumbered with a pole at all). In the design of the Z-Poles, Black Diamond has come up with an excellent matching of rigidity, light weight, and stowibility. And I love the engineering forethought they've put into the internal cord tensioners. I was concerned that, over time, the cord would stretch, resulting in some vertical play at the joints. But the tensioners inside the lower pole joint allow the cord to be easily "tuned" as needed. Changeable pole tips are a nice touch as well, though I have yet to use the carbide tips.

Comments about Black Diamond Distance Z-Pole Trekking Poles - Pair:
They seemed great at first, but the handles have become stuck in a down position, rendering them unusable. They also, prior to becoming stuck, became very difficult to collapse because the middle section wouldn't slide, despite keeping them clean. I guess distance is not an apt name. Black Diamond must have rushed these to market without proper testing. I hope they don't display the same carelessness with their climbing gear
