Comments about Black Diamond Speed 30 Pack:
I was looking for a pack that could function as both a day pack and climbing pack. The minimalist look of the Black Diamond packs first attracted my attention, and after reading several reviews of how comfortable the reACTIV suspension was, decided to give this a shot.
Although I originally wanted the Speed 40, once I got to my local REI, I found the 30 had plenty of space for my hiking/climbing needs. As a test, I took it on a late fall hike up Whiteface in the Sandwich Range of New Hampshire. Stuffed with as much gear as I could fit (probably close to 30#), the Speed 30 performed perfectly, staying snug even over some near Class 5 terrain just below the summit. With the reACTIV suspension, the pack moved with me, rather than holding me victim of its own inertia, even while lugging an 82# golden retriever up a 45 degree slab. It was easily adjustable on the fly, and the gear attachments on the outside of the pack were perfect for trekking poles and Microspikes (or ice axes and crampons if I ever get myself into ice climbing).
My only concern about the pack was that with my hydration bladder at full capacity, the pack bows out against my back. I'm sure this could have been solved by improving my packing technique, and as long as everything was cinched tight, I never found it to be a problem.
All in all, the most comfortable pack that I have every owned.

Comments about Black Diamond Speed 30 Pack:
I have used this pack quite a few times now and I have nothing but good things to say about it. This is my primary day pack for summer and winter days. The top loading 30L design is very efficient with space. I also love the roll top feature. If your load is small, just cinch down the pack, remove the top lid and you're good to go.
The "Reactive" suspension system carries a load amazingly well. The whole suspension system is designed to move with you and really seems to take the weight off your shoulders. The back padding and hip belt are comfortable but I feel like the shoulder straps could use a bit more... But that doesn't affect comfort too much unless you're carrying 30+ lbs.
The durability of this pack is awesome as well. It has ice axe and loops and a crampon patch. This pack has yet to see any damage despite rubbing against trees, hits from crampons/ice axes, and sliding on ice. Also, the DWR treatment holds up very well. I have been through some down pours and heavy snowfall with this pack and none of my items were wet, not even in the top lid.
Overall, get this pack! It's durable, very water resistant, lightweight, and the suspension holds a load nicely.

Comments about Black Diamond Speed 30 Pack:
I absolutely love this pack, it is really a high quality pack. one thing to note is that the Sulfur color is not yellow, it is more like avacado-ish. (green)
But if you dont mind the color then you will be very very happy!

Comments about Black Diamond Speed 30 Pack:
Black Diamond thought of just about everything with this pack. It's perfect for a day in the mountains and has everything needed for a simple, top-loading, lightweight alpine pack. Unlike other 30-liter "day packs", the suspension system allows you to keep the weight on your hips and not on your shoulders, which makes carrying a rope and climbing gear much more enjoyable on long approaches. If you would rather go light, the removable hip belt allows the pack to fit easily with a harness (although I've also climbed with the hip belt attached without too much trouble) and allows you to use it like any other day pack.
The extras which really sold me on this pack include: the rope carry strap (which can be used with or without the removable lid); the crampon patch and strap attachment points (why don't all summit packs have these?); and the roll top closure system.
My only complaint, if I had to have one, is that there isn't a small zipper pocket on the hip belt for a bar or small camera. I use this pocket on my other pack all of the time and find it incredibly convenient.

Comments about Black Diamond Speed 30 Pack:
Purchased this pack as a climbing pack. It's perfect - holds a full rack, 15 alpine draws, 10 double slings, harness, food & water, clothing, 70m rope, helmet, shoes, etc. on approach & then compresses down for the climb. Shoes & helmet strapped to outside, rope under lid (with the included rope strap), everthing else inside. Basic shape is narrow and long so it keeps out of the way.
Black Diamond's new Speed 30's are considerably longer than the previous model. I usually use a size large in BD packs, but the large was too long and I replaced it with a medium - perfect fit for a climbing pack (6' 175 - 180 lbs).
This also seems large for a 30 l pack. If you look at the dimensions in the BD literature, the Speed 30 is the same size (depth & width) as the Speed 40. The 40's extra capacity comes in increased length. But it's perfect for what I needed.
The method for removing the padded hip belt is not obvious, but once off the light weight alpine waist belt is perfect for climbing, smooth, doesn't interfere with your harness, and keeps the pack centered. There is some velcro loop material (not the hook side) that remains on the alpine belt that I thought would be a bother. However, in three solid days of climbing with this pack I never noticed the material.
The material used to construct the bag is new to me, but it seems incredibly durable (for a relatively light weight pack). No problems at all so far and I ddon't aniticpate any.
The shoulder straps look completely normal, but they have a sort of "active" attachment on the bottom. When you have the pack strapped down and lean from one side to the other, the shoulder straps "adjust" to your movement. When I first experienced this it felt odd, but after a couple of trips I like the action and find it helpful for balance crossing boulder fields, etc.
There are a couple of differences in the actual pack (at least the one I received) and the photos and description here and at BD. There is a rope strap (big plus). The gear loops on the padded waist belt are not covered in plastic as pictured - they are a tough sewn webbing material without the plastic. This was not an issue for me as I removed the padded belt and use the alpine waist belt instead.
In general the pack is perfect for my use. I wish BD had included the helmet "carrier" that is on some of their other current models, but nothing's perfect!
