Comments about ALPS Mountaineering Compression Stuff Sack - Small - Special Buy:
While this sack performs its basic function, there's a lot of room for improvement.
First of all, the straps are much too long. By the time you cinch them down, they're dangling from every part of this thing.
Second, the material is too bulky. Sure, it might be strong, but it's too heavy and clunky for backpacking, which kind of defeats the whole purpose. It's not very smooth, either, so sliding items into the opening is kind of a challenge.
Third, and most importantly, it doesn't actually compress that well. The way the straps are attached, they're so far toward the middle of the sack that, cinched to their absolute tightest, they just don't compress all that much. If they were attached further toward the ends, they would cinch more and give better compression. Anything that fits in the sack won't compress very much and anything that would be compressed significantly by the sack won't fit into it to big with. I put my sleeping bag in here and it didn't get any smaller than the simple corded sack that it came with. I also tried a much bulkier fleece bag liner, but it was only reduced to about 2/3 its original size and I know it could be squished down more than that.
I plan on returning this and getting something different. I guess you get what you pay for.
