I've got several of these sacks and they are great for packing to travel in our VW Westy. The XL is great for a double sleeping bag and pillows - stuffs in easily and then compresses down to half the volume. We use L for dog food and dog dishes, and a medium for warm outerwear. Conservation of space is critical with two or three people and two Aussies venturing in the van!
Are they suitable for backpacking? Probably not, as they are quite heavy. But for the abuse that our road-tripping gives them, they are perfect.
