Comments about Exped Pillow Pump:
The thing I miss most while backpacking is a comfortable pillow. I've tried various pillow solutions in the past, like filling a stuff sack with extra clothes or wrapping a fleece shirt around some extra gear, but the result has always been disappointing. Yes, there are purpose-built backpacking pillows, but they tend to pack large and compress easily under the weight of my head. Not good. Enter the Exped Pillow Pump.
I first learned about the Pillow Pump when I purchased an Exped UL 7 mat. I didn't care much about the pump part, but I really liked the idea of a compact pillow that might actually be comfortable.
Out on the trail, the Pillow Pump met my expectations with aplomb. It mated easily with my UL 7 mat and completed the inflation in very little time. I had no problems operating the pump inside my small solo backpacking tent.
When the mat inflation was done, I disconnected the Pillow Pump, closed its intake port, put a short breath in through its output port, and snapped everything shut. And there it was: a nice little pillow.
I slept well that night with the Pillow Pump under my head. It nestled into the top of my mummy sleeping bag, so it stayed in place, and it kept its inflation level constant through the night. I'm not sure about the engineering behind it, but for whatever reason the combination of foam and inflation in the Pillow Pump was really comfortable.
In the morning, the Pillow Pump easily deflated and rolled into its small stuff sack.
If I could change one thing, it would be to give the pillow pump a slightly softer exterior, like "mouse fur" or something. But that's just a minor quibble.
Overall, it's great.

Comments about Exped Pillow Pump:
I purchased the Exped Synmat UL 7 recently and wondered about the flat valves, one to inflate, and one to deflate. Then I discovered this pillow / pump combination that attaches directly to the inflate valve and allows you to simply press or step on the foam filled pillow and fill the mat quickly and easily.
The pump works great. Pull it out of its stuff bag. Open the valve and let it sit for a couple minutes to let the inner core foam expand. Then simply attach to the inflate valve and push up and own by hand or foot. Perfect and easy.
But the real surprise was how comfortable the pillow was. I've tried inflatable pillows before and found them to be like sleeping on a balloon. This is exactly the opposite. There is a solid sponge foam core, and by putting just a small breath of air into the pillow it becomes the perfect firmness without feeling like a balloon, or a bunch of recycled foam, or a puff of down feathers that squish to oblivion.
Definitely will find a place in my pack anytime I go out with my Synmat UL mat. The 6 oz is a fair trade off for the ease of inflation and the comfort of the pillow. Doing dual duty at the weight of a small pillow is a fine example of creative work from Exped.

Comments about Exped Pillow Pump:
The product description claims that it will work with other pad manufacturers but this is just not true. Will not work with anything except exped mats, and it only works with some of those. Bottom line, try it before you buy it.

Comments about Exped Pillow Pump:
This pillow is great -- HOWEVER, I can't speak for the pump because it doesn't work with the Exped mats I ordered. REI I noticed doesn't point out anywhere that, as the exped website says, "The 2010 Pillow Pump (ruby red color) works with Exped mats that do not have integrated pumps, 2010 production year and later." So before buying, check to see if your Exped mat has an integrated pump (I have the Exped SynMat 7 with integrated air pump, and this doesn't fit it.) Oh well, I'll return these and get the other Exped pillows -- they seem super comfy in any event.
