Comments about Big Agnes Grouse Mountain +15 Sleeping Bag:

I've tried several nice bags, and while they've been well made and warm, and packed down reasonably I've had 2 upgrades on my wish list, a bag that offered enough room for a bigger guy like myself and still packed down small enough to leave a little extra room in my Baltoro 65. The Grouse Mountain seems to be the perfect bag, at least for me and I couldn't be happier.

My last bag was a REI Zen Long, it's a very well made bag and I do like it. My only complaint is that at 220 lbs and 5' 11" it's a little tight for me since I sleep on my side. The Grouse Mountain packs down quite a bit smaller, leaving quite a bit of extra room in my pack, enough that I can also get my Exped UL mat and pillow in the sleeping bag compartment, and still have room left over.

But the biggest reason I tried the Grouse Mountain and am very happy with is the extra room in the bag. It's a LOT roomier than your average mummy bag, which for me is perfect. I can vip it all the way up and sleep on my side with plenty of room to still move around. I can bend my knees and move around with no restriction, something I haven't been able to do with any other bag. The foot box also seems to have extra room vs. what I'm used to, so I can move my feet around. If you're 170 lbs, this probably isn't a big deal, but for larger guys who don't sleep perfectly still on their backs this bag is ideal.

It seems plenty warm, though so far I've only used it down to 40 degrees. It was plenty warm in just my boxers and t shirt, so much so that I never zipped it all the way up.

I did a tremendous amount of research before I bought this bag and tried it out at the REI store for a few mins to make sure it would be as roomy as advertised. I also do like the sleeve for the pad, it keeps it in place all night with no pulling of the bag. This is the perfect bag for a bigger guy that wants room to move around but is still very conscious of weight and packability. I couldn't be happier.

Comments about Big Agnes Grouse Mountain +15 Sleeping Bag:

Had this up in Devil's Lake Wisconsin for the weekend with the night time temperature at 15 degree and this bag did not disappoint! I used a Therm-a-rest NeoAir (R value 2.3)with a Therm-a-rest Z-lite under that (R value 2.2). The inside liner was a Sea to Summit Reactor Extreme bag liner. With all those and my base layer on I was more than comfortable.
I've tried earlier Big Agnes bags without the insulation on the bottom and the pad sleeve going all the way to the end. It restricted my movement and kept my legs from warming up.
With the integrated half pad sleeve it kept my bag on the pad an still allowed me to thrash about. And with only the lower half fully filled with down it engulfed my legs in insulation which kept them warm and toasty throughout the night!
Even though this is a mummy bag, the way the half sleeve works allows you to use ether a mummy or a rectangular shaped sleeping pad. This allows you to use any style pad you have without having to buy one specifically shaped to the bag.
If you had doubts about the Big Agnes sleeping pad system don't! If you had problems with the Big Agnes sleeping pad system in the past it's fixed! There is no reason why you shouldn't own a Big Agnes sleeping bag anymore!

Comments about Big Agnes Grouse Mountain +15 Sleeping Bag:

I've been looking at cold-weather down bags and ordered this one after reading a review from a larger hiker. I am 6' tall and weigh in a 240 or so with broad shoulders, so mummy bags are problematic for me. I have a MontBell UL 40 degree bag and love it but didn't want to spend $400 for one of their warmer bags so I tried this one and I am glad I did. The bag is not lightweight, coming in at 3 1/2 lbs but what a great design. The bag has huge loft, is roomy even for a guy my size (I ordered a Long), and the integrated pad sleeve is new for me but works wonderfully. Since I constantly turn when I sleep I like that the pad sleeve keeps my bag from turning and going off the pad and yet my feet are free to roam, from fully stretched out to the occasional fetal position. The bag cinches tight, and the footbox is roomy. I love this bag and will be taking it to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro with me in a few months.

Comments about Big Agnes Grouse Mountain +15 Sleeping Bag:

I have resigned myself to never sleep while packing/camping as I am a stomach sleeper and mummy bags are just too tight. Add to that the constant tossing and turning that results in an unzipped, tangled and twisted bag and I am just miserable.

I saw a BA bag and was impressed with its width and the sleeve for the pad, so I thought I would give it a try. It is just wide enough throughout so I can sleep almost how I like and the bag and pad stay where they are supposed to. I even went out and bought the insulated BA air pad and that's another 5 star product.

I am stoked on this combo and slept beteer than ever before. Oh yeah, it's warm too, however I have not gone belove mid 30's yet.

The only negative is the zipper snags and if it unzips at the bottom, it is a pain to get going again.

Comments about Big Agnes Grouse Mountain +15 Sleeping Bag:

I have used this bag on 5 separate occasions from Fall through early spring 2011-2012.

Before reading these, keep in mind that I'm 5'6" and 120 lbs. I consider myself a colder sleeper than most as well. I have the regular size bag with the Big Agnes Recycled Insulated Air Core Pad.

The 1st time was in November, the low was supposed to be around 40F. I was fine wearing a sweatshirt with hood as well as shorts and no socks.

2nd time: I think was in the upper 40s lower 50s and raining. Wore shorts and no socks. Used the same sweatshirt as a blanket. Slept just fine.

3rd time: It was very windy and the low got down to lower 20s. (Maybe even upper 10s). I was wearing regular long baggy pants, my Columbia Omni-Heat Jacket with Omni Heat thin beanie and wool socks. I actually sweated a little and had to unzip my jacket.

4th time: My 2nd night, it was in the upper 10s and still windy. Wore the same coat as a blanket and beanie and pants, but with "no" socks this time. Wasn't cold, but wasn't warm that night either.

5th time: I think the low got down to 17F, could well have been 15F. (Out in a more remote area) I wore the jacket as a blanket with same long pants as before and wool socks. I lost my beanie mid night and couldn't find it in my sleeping bag... I think that's what caused my problem. The pad compartment worked well and kept the pad in place, but I was sliding to the edge of my tent as well. I'm going to blame those few factors as to why I was cold.

Nothing is ever fully perfect, so I'm going to point out a few minor cons.

              1. You will see a feather come out here and there when using it. I think this is typical for down bags though; this is my first.

              2. I feel as though the compartment to slide the pad through might tear one day. it hasn't yet, but I feel that it's a weak point.

Overall I'm really satisfied with this bag and all of my Big Agnes products. I think the temperature rating is accurate and the bag is really comfortable. I hope this review helps you!

Comments about Big Agnes Grouse Mountain +15 Sleeping Bag:

I slept in this bag near Salt Lake City, Utah in September. It kept me warm and was packable and light but too short for comfort. I am 69" (5' 9") tall and the "regular" says it works for people up to 70" but I was touching my feet and head if I was outstretched. Not very comfortable.

Comments about Big Agnes Grouse Mountain +15 Sleeping Bag:

Picked this bag up last week, and so far I am very pleased with it. The lack of insulation on the bottom and the use of a pad that attaches to it were my main reasons for buying it - not for weight, but because when sleeping in a hammock it holds the pad for me and saves me from having to constantly carry an underquilt for the colder months.

Took it out in the mid-twenties last night, and combined it with my pad... Worked wonders. The only part of me that got cold was my nose where it was peeking out. I'm sure it would perform quite well at the temperature it's rated. Very comfortable in my hammock. I was able to sleep on my side without problems as well. Shifting and turning wasn't an issue.

I'm a pretty big guy (not overly tall, just wide - about 5'11 and 260 lbs) and the long bag was perfect for me. I have never had a mummy bag that was comfortable for me - until now. I am very pleased with my purchase.

My only complaint is that the zipper does snag easily, but I haven't yet found a bag that doesn't have that problem...

I got this for Christmas, and requested this as my only gift so I could get this sleeping bag. This is the first expensive sleeping bag I have owned and used, and I was a little worried that I was dumping all of my Christmas gifts into one item. I am nearly 50 years old and my young son loves to backpack and camp. I was tired of sleeping bags that restricted my movement and did not keep my upper body and arms warm on cold nights. I was delighted to use this for the first time last week. My wife was using one of our old sleeping bags, and after a 29 degree night and hearing me talk about this bag, she is demanding I get her one as well. I told her that it is as if Big Angus thought of me as they designed this bag. I could sleep in any position, with plenty of room to move and get comfortable. I use a Exped mat that does not fit into the mat sleeve, but it did not seem to impact the comfort and warmth at all. I could place my arms where ever I wanted to and the design of the bag had them always covered and warm. The pillow sleeve was wonderful, and far more useful than I thought it would be. The bag breathed well, allowing me to stick my head inside the bag and I did not feel as if I was going to suffocate. I cannot wait to sleep in it again.

Comments about Big Agnes Grouse Mountain +15 Sleeping Bag:

This is a great sleeping bag! I recently used it on a three day trip in the Weminuche Wilderness in Colorado.

With most traditional mummy bags, I had a hard time covering my whole body, as I am 250 lbs and 6ft tall. The temperature dropped down to 30 degrees and I stayed completely warm the whole time (with a sleeping pad as well).

The bag covered my whole body and I could also roll around in it with no problem at all. The sleeping pad sleeve is also a great plus. It keeps the sleeping pad underneath you. So if you move around a lot in your sleep, you won't have to worry about rolling off your pad.

The bag also packs down to a very small, lightweight size, making it great for long trips into the back country.

All around great product! I would definitely recommend this product to anyone. Especially if you are a bigger person and have trouble with traditional bags.
